Book Club: Sweet Thursday
Monterey Public Library's new in-person book club, the Book Flight, launches on Tuesday, September 14 at 4:00 pm, outside on the upstairs terrace. The first book is Sweet Thursday, by John Steinbeck. Described as a “kind of light and gay and astringent” work by Steinbeck himself, Sweet Thursday was made into a Rogers & Hammerstein musical. The novel continues the story of Cannery Row and its inhabitants in the years after World War II. Many of the characters are the same, but the ravages of time and the War have changed the Row. Please pre-register for the monthly book club (space is limited). The book discussion also kicks off an 8-week series of lectures, discussion and song, “Cannery Row Days: Sweet Thursday Hooptedoodles! This series will be virtual. Keep an eye on MPL's website for details.

California Admission Day
On September 9, California celebrates its admission into the United States. It was on this day in 1850 that President Millard Fillmore signed the bill making California the 31st state. Word of California’s admission into the United States traveled slowly, as San Francisco would not receive the news of this monumental event until October 18. As written in the San Francisco Call on October 29, 1911, “Again the long delay in Congress over admitting California created, for a while, some spirit of indifference as to what the United States would do with us. But all this was brushed aside in a moment when on October 18, 1850, the steamer Oregon from Panama came steaming into the Golden Gate... The steamer Cherokee left New York for Aspinwall soon after the vote had been taken in congress which settled the matter. A flag had been made to be given Captain Patterson of the Oregon which was to make the trip from Panama to San Francisco. Another flag was made on board the Oregon on which was inscribed 'California is a State'.”

Thank You, Wish List Donors
When all funds for library materials were eliminated from the City budget last year, we started an ongoing Wish List of titles for which we anticipated a demand. More than 40 of you stepped forward to help, adding more than 100 new titles to the MPL collection. While, thankfully, the City was able to allocate a modest collections budget this year, it is just 50% of what it was pre-pandemic. We continue to maintain the Wish List for the time being and hope that you will continue to keep it in mind. Because the donor/buyer information we receive from the vendor is sparse, we generally don’t receive contact information for Wish List donors. Please know, however, that if you would like an acknowledgment letter, we would be happy to send you one. Just email perna@Monterey.org with the details of your gift (date and number of books you gifted), and your contact information.

Grandparents Day, September 12
Celebrating and honoring the grandparents and elders in society took on special poignancy last year when many families were kept separate by Covid-19. Grandparents Day (the weekend after Labor Day) became an unofficial holiday in 1978 when President Carter made a proclamation to uphold the tradition. Many grandparents might enjoy storytimes with littles, sharing some books like those above. Just call us at (831) 646-3933 to request some!
