On Friday, June 5, the Berkeley Public Library celebrated the unveiling of its newly redesigned Children’s Story Rooms at the Central Library. Representatives from the Board of Library Trustees, Library Foundation, Friends of the Library, Chamber of Commerce, Library Staff, and community members gathered for a morning of storytelling, music, and family-friendly fun.
Author Maggie Tokuda-Hall shared reflections on the joy and freedom of reading, followed by a lively dance party with DJ AvoColey, who energized the crowd with 80s and 90s hits in their signature avocado suit.
The reimagined space—designed as an inviting forest glade—was created through a partnership with the City of Berkeley, Design Draw Build Architects & Builders, ABA Studios, and the Berkeley Public Library Foundation. The project received over $271,000 in Library Foundation grants, with support from more than 600 donors, including the Bernard E. & Alba Witkin Charitable Foundation and the Friends of the Berkeley Public Library.
The Story Room now stands as a newly vibrant, welcoming space for families to connect, explore, and grow a lifelong love of reading.
