OUR MAKERSPACE IS COMING SOON
|
|
The Library Makerspace is designed to provide equitable access for community members to technology and other tools that might not be readily accessible or affordable for individuals. Based on the results of a community survey conducted in 2019 and community workshops held in early 2020, the space will include three main components:
- Technology tools, including 3D printers, a laser cutter, digital design and modeling software, and opportunities to learn about robotics and electronics
- Sewing machines and hand crafting tools for the creation of items such as bags, jewelry, scrapbooks, knitting, or textiles
- Shared collaboration spaces, including easily reconfigurable workshop tables and seating, numerous white boards, large screen monitors, and a small videoconferencing/audio recording space
The space will host a variety of programs and activities, including STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) workshops for youth during after school hours, drop-in hours for use of the equipment by adults during evening hours, workshops in collaboration with numerous community partners, and a co-working space for individuals or small groups to work during daytime hours. The design and construction of the Makerspace is being jointly funded by City’s Capital Improvement Program funds and funds raised by the Redwood City Public Library Foundation through grants from other foundations, gifts from corporations or organizations, and donations from individuals.
While the construction phase is about to get underway, the Redwood City Library Foundation is still fundraising for phase 2, which includes some of the equipment to be included in the space. Please contact them at rclf-ed@redwoodcity.org if you are interested in supporting this project.
Pardon our dust while we transform our former Computer Lab into a space for creation and collaboration! While the Makerspace is under construction, public use computers have been relocated to the Community Room.

Over the next few weeks, people all over Redwood City will be celebrating kites. Our Wednesday craft bags for Little Learners, Craft Club and Teen Craft Club include a kite making activity! Pickup is at 11am on Wednesday behind the Downtown Library.
Why kites? The Art Kiosk at Courthouse Square is now filled with The Flying Dreams, an installation by Cuban artist Carlos Estévez. We hope that you and your family will be able to visit the display, maybe even at one of the Redwood City Events at Courthouse Square!
