A Novel Idea 2019 ... Revealed!
"A Novel Idea" has taken readers all over the world---from New York to Ghana, and Alaska to Japan. But we've never gone beyond Earth, until now. The Deschutes Public Library Foundation unveiled best-selling author Robert Kurson's Rocket Men as the 2019 A Novel Idea selection on December 1. The book shares the inside story of the dangerous Apollo 8 mission of 1968. Kurson's book not only captures the urgency of the mission, but it also tells the story of a country that came together during very tumultuous times. Learn more about the selection here and find a video of Kurson introducing Central Oregon to his book here. Programming begins April 6; books are available for check-out now, as are all-new Book Club Bags. The bags are available for two-week check-out and include 10 copies of Rocket Men plus discussion questions; find more information here
If It's December, It's Time for the Train Man!
Michael "The Train Man" Lavrich returns to the Downtown Bend Library on December 20 to share his extensive collection of model trains. This marks Lavrich's nineteenth year displaying his trains at the library, meaning children who first watched the trains run almost 20 years ago may now have children of their own with whom they share this family tradition.  Trains will run December 20-28, but running times vary by day:

   - December 20, 21: 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; 3:00-6:00 p.m.

   - December 22, 23: noon-5:00 p.m.

   - December 27, 28: 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; 3:00-6:00 p.m.

The Library of Things Moves to La Pine
Would you like to try your hand at knitting? Maybe you'd like to give a GoPro a whirl. The Library of Things is now at the La Pine Library, which is our  second library to implement a Library of Things and will serve as the next test site for the program. All of the kits below can be checked out at the La Pine Library during this evaluation phase:
Nature & Bird-watching Kit | Crochet Kit | GoPro Kit
Instant Pot Kit | Knitting Kit | Ukulele Kit
For now, Library of Things kits are located ONLY at the La Pine Library and have a three-week loan period (21 days), at which time they must be returned to the La Pine Library. We'll continue to explore the possibility of expanding the program. Learn more about the Library of Things here.

The button  is  at the top right corner of our home page. In Dark Mode, the website adopts a darker color palette for all browsers, which can reduce glare and eye fatigue.  Check it out here.
