CITY CORNER

Creating a More Inclusive Redwood City Through Language Access

At the City of Redwood City, we aim to build greater language access. Our initiative includes developing a Language Access Policy that will help ensure members of our diverse community can participate in the programs and services we offer.

As part of this process, we have developed a Language Needs Survey. Through the survey, we hope to hear directly from the community on any challenges you have experienced regarding language access and the changes you would like to see in the City.

Consider completing a survey, today! If you would like to fill out a paper copy, you can pick one up at City Hall, the Redwood City Community Centers, and the Redwood City Public Libraries.

PATHWAYS TO EQUITY

Pathways To Equity: Celebrating Redwood City’s Racial Equity Mural

Join us for a celebration of Redwood City’s “Visions of Equity” mural, a new public artwork depicting moments from our community's history as well as our shared hopes and dreams for the future. From public workshops and hands-on art activities to walking tours and a documentary film screening, this event series will offer many opportunities to engage with the mural’s artwork, themes, and vision for a more equitable world.

Meet the Muralist

Join artist Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith for an interactive workshop where we'll explore how to create change in our own lives. We can each be empowered to affect the circles closest to us--at work, our families, and all the communities we engage with. This workshop will be offered on three dates: September 30, October 28 and November 16.

NEWS FROM THE FOUNDATION

Have you caught sight of the four eye-catching banners on the poles outside the Downtown Library (one of them shown here)? These banners are a tribute to Banned Books Week, October 1-7, celebrated by the Library Foundation with the 2nd Annual Upscale Pub Crawl. Tickets here

Banned Books Week is a nod to the freedom to read, a freedom that is under siege. According to the American Library Association, reported book challenges in 2022 nearly doubled compared to the previous year.

Here's the scoop on the Upscale Pub Crawl: You start your journey at the library and, from there, wander through downtown Redwood City. At your pit stops, any of 17 local pubs, you will be treated to discounted drinks with Foundation representatives stationed there along with posters that spotlight books that have faced challenges or outright bans.

This isn't just a night of revelry (though there is that). It is also a fundraiser, supporting vital library initiatives and a chance to learn more about Banned Books Week. And it is an opportunity to make memories with your friends and neighbors while boosting our local businesses.

If you are intrigued (how could you not be?), mark your calendar for the Upscale Pub Crawl on October 11. Get your tickets here
