Youth Literature Takes Center Stage
Deschutes Public Library's Youth Lit Fest--slated for April 6 at Summit High School--is perfect for readers and writers of all ages. A Caldecott Medal winner and a Newbery Honor winner are two of the eight presenters at this free, full-day celebration of writing and illustrating books for children and teens. Those who hope to publish their own book and those who love books for youth are encouraged to listen and learn from some of the best in the field. The Youth Lit Fest is free, but space is limited and registration is required. Find more info, including a list of authors, and register online here.
A Novel Idea Begins, and We're Heading Out of This World!
Programming for the 16th Annual A Novel Idea begins on April 6; what follows is three weeks of programs that explore and expound upon the themes and ideas found in Robert Kurson's book, Rocket Men. We'll meet an astronaut, scan the sky with powerful telescopes, explore spacetime, learn about women's achievements in the age of Apollo 8, and much more. The programming culminates with a free presentation by Kurson on April 28. All programs, including the author's presentation, are free of charge thanks to the support of the Deschutes Public Library Foundation. Free tickets are required for Kurson's talk; they will be available to the public on April 6 online and in all Deschutes Public Libraries. Find a full schedule of events as well as a detailed Readers Guide here
Join Oregon Poet Laureate Kim Stafford in April
Oregon Poet Laureate Kim Stafford has shaped his works around the notion of poetry as a luxury that could save your life--perhaps a little at a time--by making your days more buoyant, filled with curiosity and insight, and emotionally rich. On April 11  Stafford visits the East Bend Library to read from individual poems that seek connection with the self, other people, and Earth. He also leads a poetry workshop on April 12 (space is limited and registration is required for the workshop).
Book Club Kits Offer Something for All Ages
Did you know your Library has more than 200 book club kits available for checkout? We have kits for children, teens, and adults that include 10-12 copies of the book and copies of a reader's guide, all contained in a handy tote bag. From fiction to non-fiction, we have something for everyone. Kits can be checked out for two months and are holdable using your library card. Visit our book clubs page here to learn more about the kits and to link to available titles.
Oregon State Court Documents Now Available at Redmond Library
Redmond residents can now access electronic state court documents without travelling to the Deschutes County Courthouse in downtown Bend, thanks to a pilot project spearheaded by the Deschutes County Access to Justice Committee and Deschutes Public Library.  The pilot project makes the Oregon Judicial Court Information Network (OJCIN) accessible for free on public internet computers at the Redmond Library. It is a valuable resource for court case information from all 36 of Oregon's circuit courts, the Oregon Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and Tax Court. Link here for more information.
Service Spotlight: Library on the Go!
From hosting book clubs at senior living communities to visiting neighborhood parks with Biblioteca en camino, we meet people where they are. The Library delivers books and materials to homebound customers and visits area schools on a regular basis, because a library is not defined by its walls, but by the growing community it serves.
