Roof Replacement
Starting the week of August 4, the Library will be getting a new roof. The project will take one month to complete. The roofers will be removing shingles before the Library opens, in order to cause the least amount of disruption. Placing new shingles on the roof will continue throughout the day. While the roofers are working on the front part of the building, the book drop may be inaccessible for short periods. Please use caution around construction areas. Thank you for your patience during this project.
Events in August
Take a break from the heat to attend a program at the Library this month. Highlights in August include the following events:
  • Health screening: A free health screening will be held on Tuesday, August 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Si Birch Community Room. Funded through a generous grant from The Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation and provided by Northern Arizona Healthcare, the screening measures cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood glucose.
  • iPad/iPhone workshop: The Oak Creek Apples, in partnership with the Library, is offering a series of workshops focused on Apple's iPad and iPhone. The first session will be held on Saturday, August 23, from 10 a.m. to noon in the community room. This workshop will cover the basic features of these devices, such as e-mailing, web surfing, using the camera, and downloading books from the Library and other sites. Participants need to bring their own iPad/iPhone. Registration for this free program is not required.
  • ONEBOOKAZ writing workshop: Submissions for the next ONEBOOKAZ writing competition, open to all unpublished or self-published Arizona authors of children's, teen, and adult fiction and nonfiction, are due October 1 through 14, 2014, at the ONEBOOKAZ website. As part of the ONEBOOKAZ competition, the Arizona State Library is hosting a writing workshop, called Narrative Essentials, at various regional locations. A workshop is scheduled at Sedona Public Library on August 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the community room. Take a walk through the nuts and bolts of the narrative process with Yavapai College instructor Kristen Kauffman. From idea generation to finishing a final draft, attendees will come away well-equipped to tackle their next story. This free program is open to all writers. Please call or visit the reference desk to sign up.

New IT Manager Joins Staff
Hello, my name is Michael Adkins and I am the new IT Manager here at Sedona Public Library. I am taking over for Art Budilowsky, who retired at the end of July. I came here in May of this year from Detroit, Michigan, with 20 years of IT experience. My hobbies are fishing, fishing, and...yep...fishing.  I look forward to serving the Library and community here in beautiful Sedona.
Back to School Tools
As you prepare your students for another school year, take advantage of the resources available to children of all ages at the Library. Students can use a computer to type and print a paper; prepare for SAT, PSAT, and other tests with test prep materials and online courses; get help from a tutor through Tutor.com; and so much more. For more information, stop by the youth services desk or call 928-282-7714, ext. 119.
Movies in August
The Library is the place to be on Monday nights in August! Enjoy a free movie every week, starting at 6 p.m. in the Si Birch Community Room.
  • Aug 4: Latino Services presents Cesar Chavez, a biopic recounting the union leader's efforts to improve labor conditions for migrant farm workers.
  • Aug 11: Jodorowsky's Dune, a fascinating look at the creative process behind a doomed attempt to film Frank Herbert's science-fiction classic "Dune."
  • Aug 18: Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen's award-winning drama starring Cate Blanchett.
  • Aug 25: The Past, a French-Iranian film about the dynamics of a troubled family.
New Online Resources
The new collection of Arizona State Library databases is now accessible on our website. These online tools provide information about history, science, literature, current events, and more. For example, try Britannica Library, a digital version of "Encyclopedia Britannica," which is no longer being published in a printed edition. Britannica Library offers three sites in one--for children, young adults, and adults--so that you can choose the level that works best for you. With Britannica Library, you can conduct research, complete homework assignments, or just learn something new, all from the convenience of your home computer.
