The wide array of programs at the Edgartown Library are funded in large part by the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library. The Friends are a volunteer organization whose mission is to raise funds and support the library and its programs. Library Open House

Stop by for some holiday cheer during the library's Open House, and purchase a beautifully wrapped poinsettia plant for $5. All sales benefit the Friends.


There will also be a raffle, kids craft, refreshments, and community caroling at 3pm with piano accompaniment (for more information, see Community Caroling details below).

Colleen Macsuga leads a Vinyasa class that is therapeutic, creative, and powerful. Vinyasa (a practice designed to help you heal while keeping you in peak physical shape) incorporates elements of strength building, making it a dynamic experience. If you have a yoga mat, please bring it with you. The library will have a limited number of mats available for use. All levels are welcome; each pose is guided from the foundation to the full expression.

[In Person] Atlas of Life Presentation

Saturday, December 3 at the West Tisbury Library

Atlas of Life program director Matt Pelikan will discuss the newly-launched MV Atlas of Life website. This website will serve as an outlet for community members to share their sightings of flora and fauna, and as a resource to learn more about nature on the Island. Launched in 2021 by BiodiversityWorks and the Betsy and Jesse Fink Family Foundation, this project seeks to enlist our community of nature enthusiasts to document the distinctive biodiversity of Martha's Vineyard. [Online] Build it; Build it Better: Poetry Workshops

In poet Donald Nitchie’s writing workshop, participants will have an opportunity to build a poem prompted and inspired by poetry that Donald will choose for the exercise. Poets will also have a chance to submit a poem or two of their own for the group to read and discuss during the second half of the workshop. Positive peer assessment can help you through a writing problem and give you a new perspective on your work. Once registered, you will be emailed the workshop materials.

[In Person] Author Talk: The Combat Zone: Murder, Race, and Boston's Struggle for Justice by Jan Brogan

Jan Brogan has worked as a correspondent for the Boston Globe and as a staff reporter for the Worcester Telegram and The Providence Journal, where she won the Gerald Loeb award for distinguished financial writing. Her true crime debut, The Combat Zone: Murder, Race, and Boston’s Struggle for Justice, is about the 1976 murder of Harvard football player Andrew Puopolo in Boston’s old Combat Zone district, the two trials that followed (with nearly opposite verdicts), and the impact the case had on the city and on criminal justice. The Combat Zone was nominated for both an Agatha and Anthony award for best non-fiction published in 2021.

[Online] Chef Look Cooks: Gaelic Steaks (for the Queen!)

Join us as we honor the passing of her majesty with one of Queen Elizabeth's favorite meals. With hunting season in full swing, Chef Look will be preparing this dish the way the queen preferred - with a lovely cut of venison loin. The steak will sit atop a mash of potatoes and parsnips, topped with a creamy mushroom gravy, and served with a side of poached carrots.

[In Person] Open Mic Night at EPL

Calling all performance artists, musicians, and poets! The Edgartown Library will be hosting an open mic night on the last Wednesday of every month. This will be a space to practice, encourage, and connect with other artists. Come work on the performance of a new song, practice a monologue for an upcoming play, or tell a story you would like to share; there will even be room for movement to perform a dance piece. Or just come to watch, listen, support, and connect with our creative community. Performances will be capped at 8 minutes.

Drop in and free-paint using our collection of finger paints and paintbrushes. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

[In Person] Fit Camp with Bonnie Kingsbury

Kids can get their bodies moving on Wednesday afternoons on the library lawn, weather permitting. This after-school youth fitness program will offer healthy activities incorporating simple cardio, agility, and mind over matter drills. For kids 8 and older.

Library Book Boxes

A monthly library subscription service

Book boxes are back! Want to find your next good book, plus get some cool items to keep? Sign up for the library's monthly subscription box for kids and teens ages 8 and older. Here's how it works:


  1. Fill out the subscription form on our website (the form will go live on December 15, with limited signups available).
  2. Wait. This is the hard part! Subscriptions will be filled at the beginning of each month.
  3. Pick up your Book Box at the library. Participants will receive an email when their box is ready for pickup. Each box will contain two library materials, and the rest is yours to keep.
  4. Return the library materials after a month, then fill out a new form to sign up for the next month!

Story Walk at Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary

The Edgartown Library and Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation have partnered to bring you a story walk every month.

This self-guided activity takes place at the Sheriff's Meadow Sanctuary and is for children of all ages and their caregivers.

You can enjoy the library's WiFi from the comfort of your car in both of our parking lots, or, when the weather agrees, outdoors, where there is plenty of seating.

Inkjet Cartridge Recycling Program
Support our local Vineyard League by recycling ink jet cartridges. The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard has drop boxes for collecting used printer inkjet cartridges in all six towns, including at the Edgartown Library. Cartridges are sent to a recycler, keeping them out of landfills. Please note, inkjet cartridges are the only kind that can be accepted.
