Holiday Open House

Saturday, December 9

12pm - 2pm

Stop by for some holiday cheer during the library’s Holiday Open House. The Friends of the Edgartown Library will be selling poinsettia plants for $5 each. All sales will benefit the Friends and support library programs.



There will also be refreshments, a kids' drop-in hot-chocolate kit craft, and a screening of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker in our program room at 3pm.

[Online] Baking Demo and Discussion with Chef Erin Jeanne McDowell

Who doesn't like a bit of holiday baking? Join us online for a baking demonstration and discussion with chef and cookbook author Erin Jeanne McDowell. Erin will demonstrate how to make one of her favorite recipes, followed by a Q&A with attendees.

Holiday Craft Series

Get creative during the holiday season by coming to one of our holiday craft workshops. All supplies will be provided, and you will leave with your very own personalized holiday craft to add to your home or give to loved ones. These workshops are intended for adults only.

Home Energy Assistance with Vineyard Power

Want to learn how to make your home or business more energy-efficient? Vineyard Power will be at the Edgartown Library to discuss options that work for you. They can help you get a no-cost home energy assessment, rebates for energy-efficient home heating appliances, assistance in adopting renewable energy resources, and other incentives available as our island transitions away from fossil fuels. Bring your latest electric bill or electric account number to sign up for an assessment.

Movie Screening: The Nutcracker

Experience the wonder of the New York City Ballet’s iconic performance on the big screen. Featuring beloved melodies by Tchaikovsky and choreography by George Balanchine, this Christmas classic is sure to be a hit with the whole family.

Special Holiday Opera Club

Sunday, December 10

1pm - 4pm

The Opera Gala from Baden-Baden (filmed in 2016) starts off with vocal fireworks and never lets up. Tenor Jonas Kaufmann leads a superb cast of singers through a program that includes works from Puccini, Mascagni, Verdi, Wagner, and other greats. The cast includes Anja Harteros (soprano), Ekaterina Gubanova (mezzo), and Bryn Terfel (bass-baritone). Maestro Marco Armiliato conducts the Badische Staatskapelle. The gala runs approximately 2.5 hours, with intermission. Shown with English subtitles.

Tech Time at the Anchors

Do you have questions about using your laptop, smartphone, iPad, or other devices? The Edgartown Library is partnering with the Edgartown Council on Aging to provide tech time sessions every month at the Anchors. Call 508-627-4368 to sign up for a 20-minute session.

Beach Befrienders Beach Cleanup at Long Point

Beach BeFrienders is a collaboration between the Vineyard Conservation Society, Island Libraries, Island DWPs and the MV Refuse District, and is dedicated to tending our beloved Island beaches.


Join us every fourth Saturday to clean up an Island beach. Beach BeFriender official cleanup kits are available at the library, and disposal is free at any Island transfer station.

Chef Look Cooks - The Batter Series: Cornbread

Come hungry to our next in-person Chef Look Cooks program that's all about batters. A sweet and savory side dish that goes with so many classic holiday offerings, cornbread is a very versatile batter. It can be baked in loaf pans, cast iron pans, or even small madeleine cookie molds to make tasty treats for all sorts of applications. Join us live at the library as we learn how to make a basic batter, and explore some simple changes we can make to bring it to new levels of deliciousness.

Drop-in Mah Jongg

Mondays

1pm - 3pm (no program on 12/25 &1/1)

Come to the library every Monday for our drop-in Mah Jongg sessions. These sessions do not include formal instruction, but they will provide a chance to practice what you have learned! Experienced players are encouraged to join. Mats, tiles, and cards will be provided, but please bring your own if you have them.

Ukulele Jam Session

Ukulele players of all ages and levels are welcome. Brief instruction will be included, with an emphasis on strumming and having fun. The group will provide a few extra ukuleles, but please bring your own uke (or other stringed instrument) if you have one.


The library also has two ukuleles available for patrons to borrow using their library card. Please contact us or inquire at the circulation desk to learn more.

Drop-in Knitting Group, with Cindy Bonnell

Master knitter Cindy Bonnell presides over a sociable group of knitters on Wednesday afternoons. Experts and aspiring knitters of all levels of experience are welcome to bring their projects and drop in for support, inspiration, and advice.

Restorative Reset, with Jelisa Difo

Wednesdays (no program on 12/6 or 12/20)

5:30pm - 6:30pm

This class will explore Restorative Yin postures done close to the ground to promote deep rest and encourage physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. Appropriate for all levels, restorative yoga is practiced at a slow pace and focuses on long holds, stillness, and deep breathing. A limited number of yoga mats and props are available; if you have your own, please bring them with you.


Note: there will be no program on December 6th or 20th.

International Film Nights

6pm - 8pm

Each Thursday evening we will be showing a different contemporary international film, with English subtitles. December’s titles feature 20th-century classics and modern-day favorites from around the world. Dessert and light refreshments will be served. Click on the titles below for more information.

Vinyasa Power Yoga (all levels)

9am - 10am

Vinyasa (a practice designed to help you heal while keeping you in peak physical shape) incorporates elements of strength-building, making it a dynamic experience. All levels are welcome; each pose is guided from the foundation to the full expression.


If you have a yoga mat, please bring it with you. A limited number of yoga mats and props are available.

Prenatal & Postpartum Yoga, with Molly Flam

10:30am - 11:30am

This prenatal and postpartum yoga class is for anyone who is pregnant or 6 weeks to 12 months postpartum. Non-crawling babies may attend. The class will focus on tools for relaxation, stretching, and strengthening in the neck, hips, shoulders, and lower back to ease pain and discomfort and deepen the mind-body connection.


Limited yoga mats and props are available; if you have your own, please bring it with you.

Mothers’ Conversation Circle

Saturdays

11:30am - 12:30pm

This informal discussion group, led by Molly Flam of Island Mama MV, provides a space for pregnant women and mothers to gather, share their honest experiences, connect, and learn from other mothers in the community. Feel free to come alone or bring your baby or toddler with you. Space will be available for babies and toddlers to crawl and play.

Edgartown Animal Control Officer Kim Andrade will be visiting the children's room during our Open House to show you how to make a reindeer hot chocolate craft!

Santa Visit

Come get your picture taken with Santa and make a holiday-themed craft! Edgartown Animal Control Officer Kim Andrade will be on hand to help kids make a dog toy for their own furry friend, or donate one to a dog in need.

Move It Mondays

Mondays (no program on 12/4 or 12/25)

Every Monday our program room will be open for music-based play and fun. We will provide the playlist as well as instruments and fun props to encourage creative movement and play between you and your littles. Geared toward ages 1-5 but all are welcome!


Please note, there will be no program on December 4th or 25th.

Drop-in Play-Doh Group

Tuesdays (no program on 12/26)

10:30am - 12pm

Create and play using our collection of Play-Doh and sculpting toys in the Children's Room. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Fit Camp with Bonnie Kingsbury

Wednesdays

3pm - 4pm

Kids can get their bodies moving on Wednesday afternoons. This after-school youth fitness program will offer healthy activities incorporating simple cardio, agility, and mind-over-matter drills. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Wiggle with the Words Storytime

Join Elyce in the Program Room for a movement-based storytime using fun props and interactive stories and songs. This program is geared toward ages 1-5, but all are welcome.

On Friday mornings we will have books and materials available for kids to learn about fossils, so drop in and explore! You'll even get to choose a fossil to take home.

Join us after school on Fridays for a STEM-based activity or craft, brought to you in partnership with Edgartown Animal Control Officer Kim Andrade. Geared toward ages 8 and up.

Story Walk at Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary

The Edgartown Library and Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation have partnered to bring you a story walk every month.

This self-guided activity takes place at the Sheriff's Meadow Sanctuary and is for children of all ages and their caregivers.

Inkjet Cartridge Recycling Program
Support our local Vineyard League by recycling ink jet cartridges. The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard has drop boxes for collecting used printer inkjet cartridges in all six towns, including at the Edgartown Library. Cartridges are sent to a recycler, keeping them out of landfills. Please note, inkjet cartridges are the only kind that can be accepted.
