Library Closures
The Library will be closed on Monday, February 15, to observe Presidents Day.

 
On Thursday, February 25, the Library will close at 5 p.m. in preparation for the Sedona Chamber of Commerce Mixer, which starts at 5:30 p.m.
February Is Love Your Library Month - Drop by During Special Sunday Hours
Stop by in February to help us celebrate Love Your Library Month. A variety of programs are planned, as well as special Sunday hours on February 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. Take advantage of regular library services that day, help yourself to free cookies and coffee, and join us as we explore the coloring craze that is sweeping the nation: it's not just for kids!

Harlem Renaissance Movement Speaker Program
On Thursday, February 11, plan to attend "The Harlem Renaissance: Literary Movement," with Gladys Preshenda Jackson. This Arizona Humanities program, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the main library on White Bear Road.

Jackson's interactive presentation, which includes storytelling, poetry, theater, art, and song, will explore the unique and exciting history of African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance cultural movement. Spanning the 1920s and early 1930s, this unprecedented period of expression is associated with renowned writers such as Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and W.E.B. Du Bois.
Displays at the Library
Don't miss your chance to see the stunning annual quilt display, which runs through February 27.

Also look for the Northern Arizona Watercolor Society exhibit of paintings, on display at the front entrance from February 2 through 18.
Youth Programs in February
  • Black History Month event: On February 19, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in the community room, youth services welcomes the husband and wife team of guitarist Solomon Morris and vocalist T.W. Morris, a.k.a. "Mor Beautiful Melodies." Being local musicians, library lovers, and former educators, they will bring their own brand of musical "funstruction" to their performance.
  • After-school programs on Thursdays: Computer coding will be on the first and third Thursdays, chess happens on the second and fourth Thursdays, and "Big Hero 6" will be this month's after-school movie, beginning at 3:45 p.m. in the community room on Thursday, February 4. Call the youth desk, 928-282-7714, ext.119, for more information about these programs and other library services for babies through teens.
Movies in February
Catch a free blockbuster movie, on Monday nights at 6 p.m. in the community room. There will be no movie on February 15, Presidents Day.
  • February 1: Latino Services presents Nine Queens, a twisty Argentinean con-artist movie about two small-time grifters who endure a series of tense negotiations when they attempt to sell a sheet of counterfeit, extremely rare stamps.
  • February 8: The Intern, starring Robert DeNiro as a 70-year-old intern who ends up bringing his special brand of business savvy to a fashion enterprise.
  • February 22: The Martian, about an astronaut abandoned on the surface of Mars who must find a way to survive the planet's harsh environment, despite having limited supplies left.
  • February 29: Steve Jobs, a revealing biopic focusing on key incidents and relationships to tell the story of a digital visionary who changed the world.
Sedona Chamber of Commerce Mixer
Enjoy a relaxing evening networking with other local businesspeople at the Chamber of Commerce Mixer on Thursday, February 25, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Library. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members, payable at the door.
iPad/iPhone Workshop
iPad/iPhone users are invited to attend the ongoing Oak Creek Apples workshops. This month's workshop will be held on Sunday, February 21, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the community room. Please register by e-mailing oakcreekapples@gmail.com, as class size is limited.
Documentary Screenings and Q&A with Director
Two screenings of the documentary "The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal" will be shown on Thursday, February 18, at 4:30 and 7 p.m. in the community room. Each screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film's director, Arnold Leibovit.

The documentary profiles Oscar-winning filmmaker George Pal, known as the father of fantasy and science fiction filmmaking, who inspired contemporary artists such as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. A $5 admission fee will be charged.
Library Events in the Village
  • National Stitch in Public Day: Saturday, February 6, several members of the Embroiderers' Guild of America (EGA) will be at SPL-V from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Stop by the library to learn more about the EGA and to admire their handiwork.
  • Arizona Humanities Program: Wednesday, February 10, Akua Duku Anokye will present "African American Pioneers of Arizona." The presentation begins at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds, 405 Jacks Canyon Road. Funded by Arizona Humanities and the Sedona Friends of the Library, the program is free and open to the public. Donations are always welcome! Please note: parking and seating are limited at this location.
  • Love Your Library Open House: Join us for a Love Your Library celebration on Wednesday, February 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. Stop by the Village library located at Suite 51 A in Bell Rock Plaza to check out our new location, enjoy some refreshments, and enter our raffle to win a Kindle Fire.
  • Community Book Discussion: Participate in the book discussion of "Water for Elephants," by Sara Gruen, on Tuesday, February 23, at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds, 405 Jacks Canyon Road. Pick up your loaner copy at SPL-V. The book is available in several formats: large print, audiobook on CD, Playaway, and e-book. Please call the library if you need assistance with placing a hold.
