Want to get to know more Island farms? The Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society has created farm passports for the summer. Stop by any Island library to pick one up for yourself or your family. Visit eight farm stands or markets, stamp your passport at each one, and return to any Island library before the end of August to receive a prize! All ages are welcome to participate.

Each year, Mass Humanities organizes readings of What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?, a speech by the noted abolitionist Frederick Douglass, first delivered in 1852.
A free community reading of this famous speech will be presented at the Federated Church in Edgartown, where in 1857 Douglass delivered a thought-provoking speech entitled "The Unity of Man" before a full house at this historic church meetinghouse .
All are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

Elizabeth Langer Art Exhibit & Reception

Join us for the opening reception of artist Elizabeth Langer, whose exhibit will be on display in our program room throughout the month of July.
Langer says of her exhibit: “My work becomes whatever inspires me. I am fascinated by humans in all their complex emotions—grief, wonder, resignation, love, and strength. I am equally fascinated by the expressiveness of the human figure—in repose, in contemplation, in dance, in conflict, and in sorrow.” Langer’s paintings, collages, and prints span a multitude of varying shapes, colors, compositions, and materials, and range from figurative to abstract.
Judith Menion will perform a piano accompaniment during the reception. Light refreshments will be served.

Opera Club: Verdi’s Aida

Sonja Frisell’s lavish 1989 production of Aida stars spinto soprano Aprile Millo in the title role of the Ethiopian slave, tenor Plácido Domingo as her secret lover, Radames, and mezzo Dolora Zajick as Amneris, the Egyptian princess Aida is forced to serve. James Levine masterfully conducts the Metropolitan Orchestra and Chorus through Verdi's sonorous score. In Italian with subtitles in English, the opera runs three hours, including intermission. All adults are welcome.

Mindfulness & Loving-Kindness Meditation Class

In this class, led by Thai monk Boonyod Nonthong (Monk Benny), participants will practice loving-kindness meditation, which involves directing positive intentions and goodwill towards oneself and others. The class will also cover insight meditation, also known as Vipassana or mindfulness meditation. This technique involves observing thoughts, sensations, and experiences with non-judgmental awareness. This class is suitable for all levels, from beginner to advanced.

Sign up for this workshop to learn all aspects of Island shellfish, from preparation to the ecological importance of buying local. You'll leave with not only some delicious shellfish, but also with the knowledge of how to process your next harvest. This month, we will be learning how to shuck some of our island's finest bounty: local quahogs.

Buster the Therapy Dog Visit

Buster, a certified therapy dog, is coming to the Edgartown Public Library! Families, children, and adults of all ages are invited to meet Buster and his handler, Carl Kaplan. Buster is a member of the national Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He is an 11½-year-old West Highland White Terrier (Westie for short). He has been a therapy dog for over 10 years, and has made over 450 visits to schools, libraries, and hospitals. When he is not working, Buster enjoys hiking, eating hamburgers, and watching TV.

Inkjet Cartridge Recycling Program | |
Support our local Vineyard League by recycling ink jet cartridges. The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard has drop boxes for collecting used printer inkjet cartridges in all six towns, including at the Edgartown Library. Cartridges are sent to a recycler, keeping them out of landfills. Please note, inkjet cartridges are the only kind that can be accepted.
