News and notes from North Kingstown Free Library
June 2021
Library Hours
Mon - Thur 9:00 - 8:30
Fri & Sat 9:00 - 5:00
The library is looking a bit more like its pre-pandemic self each week. This month, as you visit you will notice that the entrance is no longer one-way, and the inside return bin is back by the circulation desk. Some key changes include:

Magazines and Newspapers
Our magazines and newspapers are on display for in-house reading, and the chairs in the reading area have come back out. Come on in to catch up on the daily news or read the latest issue of your favorite publication.

Meeting Rooms
The Conference Room is now available for meetings of up to 4 individuals. Reserve the room for your next meeting up to one week in advance. Library staff is actively working to make the upstairs meeting room available for public use once again. Check our room reservation page regularly to see updates to room availability and capacity changes.

Throughout the pandemic, Ocean State Libraries suspended overdue fines as a courtesy to patrons. Beginning July 1st, those fines will be reinstated on most library materials. All overdue items returned before July 1st will not incur fines.

In 1922, Prohibition was in full swing across the United States. Still, the use of alcohol was allowed in some instances, including usage in high school science laboratories. This permit, signed by Prohibition Commissioner Roy Asa Haynes, was granted to Principal Elmer Hussey of North Kingstown High School. It allowed the high school “1 wine gallon of alcohol per annum” to be used for “non-beverage purposes”. Hopefully, the NKHS chemistry students didn’t let any of this precious commodity go to waste!
