DECEMBER 2022 NEWSLETTER

Hello Youth Services Team!

We are just wrapping up our SRP23 workshops and it has been motivating and inspiring to talk to library staff across New Mexico. There are great ideas about SRP23, ways to brings us All Together Now, and perhaps put a New Mexico spin on things. I will be recording the workshop presentation and will make that available to everyone later this month.

I was able to get out to 14 libraries in my first six months at NMSL in 2022. the map on the right hangs in my office and helps me keep track of my trips. Looking ahead to youth services 2023, we'll have a focus on teen services, a restart of the monthly virtual meet-ups, a quarterly book club, and hopefully some wonderful site visits. What other ideas do you have?

This month's newsletter has some great opportunities for professional development, like the CSLP Virtual Summer Symposium, a chance to give feedback on upcoming Explora workshops, and news about The Palace Project.

And, don't forget to look for the Prize Raffle link in the newsletter!

NEWS

Fort Sumner Library receives New Mexico Library Foundation Development Grant

Fort Sumner Public Library was recently awarded a $1000 Development Grant from the New Mexico Library Foundation. The funds purchased 142 new books for the Children’s, Youth, Pre-Teen and Young Adult Collections, as well as locally grown pumpkins used for Fall library programming. The books will be revealed to library patrons at a special event on December 3rd.

Lori Moyer-Saiz, Assistant Library Director and Youth Services Director, applied for this grant in late September. This is the first time the Fort Sumner Public Library has applied for a grant from the New Mexico Library Foundation, and Lori’s first grant application, as well. Most of the new books will be non-fiction, and fulfill a need at the library for parents and children who home-school, students and educators from the Mennonite School, as well as the children of the community.

Ms. Moyer-Saiz states, “This was a new experience for me, and for our library. We are committed to providing for our community, and we are honored our proposal was chosen for the grant from the New Mexico Library Foundation. We couldn’t be any more excited about this opportunity.” Library Director Melanie Ratliff added, "We're super proud!"
