It's been a busy start to 2023. I hope everyone has had the chance to check out the 2023 Early Literacy Calendar. See full access information below if needed.

I love seeing libraries in the news and it was great to see the Deming Headlight's coverage of the Village of Columbus Public library, including their new children's space supported by UNM's Early Childhood Services Center. Also in this month's newsletter are some highlights from library social media accounts - a great place to find new program ideas!

I'm reading my copy of Truly Devious, and I hope you are as well. We'll have our first Book Club discussion on Thursday, February 23rd.

Meg Medina Named New National Ambassador of Young People's Literature

The Library of Congress and Every Child a Reader today announced the appointment of Meg Medina as the eighth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature for 2023-2024. Medina, a Cuban-American, is the first Latina to serve as National Ambassador in the program’s history. She succeeds Jason Reynolds, who served as the National Ambassador from 2020 through 2022.

Medina’s books examine how culture and identity intersect through the eyes of young people. Her middle-grade novel “Merci Suárez Changes Gears,” the first of three books in a trilogy about the Suárez family, received the 2019 Newbery Medal and was named a notable children’s book of the year by the New York Times Book Review.

is a good resource for staying current on books and authors and trends in publishing. It is a free, online source for book reviews with age recommendations, as well as articles about upcoming titles and author profiles.

Currently, you can look ahead to upcoming titles with 2023 Preview: Children's Books and 2023 Preview: Teen and YA Books to plan ahead for 2023 purchases and programs.

Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship

This annual $3000 scholarship from ALA is open to currently employed library support staff who are pursuing an ALA-accredited Master's Program. The award is named for long time ALA staff member Miriam L. Hornback(1944-1991) who was secretariat to the ALA Council and Executive Board. ALA Membership is not required.

Registration is open for ConnectedLibFEST, the first ever connected learning event specifically focused on small and rural libraries. Each day brings together library staff, researchers, and community members to learn from and with each other about bringing Connected Learning to small and rural library settings. Small and rural libraries are already using the principles of connected learning in their work. They do this by building relationships with youth, community members, and stakeholders; fostering interests of teens through library services; and creating opportunities for academic and life success.

Solar Science for

Libraries Workshop

April 4, 2023, 10am - 4pm MT

New Mexico public library staff are invited to attend an in-person STAR Net workshop to prepare for the upcoming solar eclipses in October 2023 and April 2024. This workshop is taught by STAR Net facilitators and will prepare library staff to facilitate meaningful solar and space science programs. Attendees will receive hands-on training on operating solar telescopes and other methods for direct and indirect solar viewing, best practices for developing and facilitating STEM programs, and how to engage with community partners and library-specific digital resource networks.

The goals of these solar science workshops are to help library staff:

1. Build off the excitement of the 2023 and 2024 solar eclipses, and engage their patrons in solar science activities

2. Safely and effectively facilitate direct (e.g. solar telescope and Sunoculars) and indirect methods of safe solar viewing

3. Develop and facilitate exciting and interactive STEM programming at their library

Workshop is limited to 35 participants. We may limit the number of staff that can attend from individual libraries to maximize state-wide coverage.
