NOVEMBER 2022 NEWSLETTER

On the road again...

I am so looking forward to getting out to see everyone at our Fall Youth Services Workshops on SRP. I love visiting our New Mexico libraries and seeing first-hand the warm and inviting spaces you create. Be sure to get your registration in by the deadline if you are planning to join us! Full details below.

We had a great time at the NMLA Annual Conference in Albuquerque. Lots of discussions about next summer and ideas for programming. Remember that in addition to our Fall in-person YS Workshops, CSLP will hold a day-long Summer Symposium virtual conference on December 8th, details below.

We are working on 2023 initiatives for Transforming Teen Services, and general Youth Services training utilizing Niche Academy, and just scheduled a solar science workshop with STAR Net for April 2023 - watch for details soon!

2022 Land of Enchantment Winners Announced

The Land of Enchantment Book Award is designed to encourage the youth of New Mexico to read outstanding books of literary quality. A committee sponsored by the New Mexico Library Association and the New Mexico Literary Association selects four lists of books: Roadrunner (Grades K-3), Coyotes (Grades 3-5), Lizards (Grades 6-8) and Black Bears (Grades 9-12). In May, New Mexico Youth who have read the required number of nominated books from one of the lists vote on their favorite.

To see the nominees for 2023 in each category, visit the LOE Book Award site.

You can collect and enter votes from your library patrons beginning in April 2023.

“Empowered by Reading: The Benefits of Giving Youth Access to a Wide Variety of Reading Materials”

The Unite Against Book Bans campaign released a report in conjunction with Banned Books Week. “Empowered by Reading: The Benefits of Giving Youth Access to a Wide Variety of Reading Materials” documents how access to a wide variety of reading materials is critical for student development and wellbeing.

Key takeaways of the report include:

• Providing children and youth with access to a wide variety of reading materials in which they can both see themselves and experience the lives of others benefits the individual reader as well as the community.

• Books that engage readers with relevant and authentic stories encourage deeper and more prolific reading which, in turn, improve students’ academic achievement, well-being, and future opportunities.

• Books on controversial and challenging topics create bridges for difficult conversations with parents and other trusted adults and help youth critically navigate their world.
