PROGRAM IN HAND?

Hard Copy or Digital Program Guide for January & February

SSPL prints limited quantities of our Program Guide, which covers two months of programming at a time. This option is for those who wish to have a physical document highlighting our offerings. If you are comfortable with an online format, we encourage you to help us conserve resources by choosing that option, and visiting our online link to the guide or our Events Calendar at www.sspl.org where you will find these, other programming, details, and have the ability to register.

Growing Towards Sustainability

SSPL Begins Recycling Library CDs & DVD's

Once thought non-recyclable, the library now has an outlet to recycle discarded library CDs & DVDs through a company called GreenDisk. The company can reclaim metals used in disc manufacturing and shred plastic discs into bits used as an asphalt additive.

Unlike some recycling companies, almost 100% of the material that GreenDisk collects is reused or recycled. No hazardous materials or obsolete components go overseas to be processed or disposed of. We have accumulated 35 lbs. of material to date.

Withdrawal of materials is an important aspect of collection development. When library materials lose the value for which they were originally selected, they should be withdrawn. The purpose of the withdrawal policy is to insure that the collection remains vital and useful by:

  • discarding and/or replacing items in poor physical condition
  • eliminating items with obsolete, misleading or superseded information
  • reducing the number of copies of titles whose relevance to the community has lessened

In the interest of sustainability, whenever it is possible, items withdrawn from the collection will be offered to the Friends of Saratoga Springs Public Library for the purpose of disposition, either through resale or donation to other community agencies. Materials that have no residual resale or informational value, or that or worn or damaged beyond use, will be recycled, if that is a viable option. (https://www.sspl.org/about/policies/collection/)

In 2018, Saratoga Springs Public Library was the 2nd library in New York State to be certified by both the Green Business Partnership and the New York Library Association's Sustainability Initiative.
