Growing Towards Sustainability

How to Enjoy Chowderfest Sustainably

If you are heading out to Chowderfest on Saturday February 10th, you can have fun while being kind to the environment.

Did you ever consider bringing your own spoon and reusable napkin? Need a bowl? You can swing by Phila Street and visit one of the Sustainable Saratoga zero waste stations to choose a reusable bowl. Volunteers will be distributing bowls and washing them with the event's sustainability partners and our neighbors, Hattie's and Caffé Lena.

Thousands of visitors queue up to taste what our local restaurants have cooked up, and parking and road closures could have you circling the city, and sending pollution into the air. To save time and peace of mind, consider parking at the Saratoga Casino & Hotel. They will be offering free shuttle rides into town from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. These shuttles will be from their Crescent Ave. parking lot, and will drop individuals off at Congress Park. For pickup, head back to Congress Park, and the shuttle will bring you back to the Saratoga Casino. Happy Chowderfest, Saratoga!

The Hard Copy or Digital Program Guide for January & February

SSPL prints limited quantities of our Program Guide, which covers two months of programming at a time. This option is for those who wish to have a physical document highlighting our offerings. If you are comfortable with an online format, we encourage you to help us conserve resources by choosing that option, and visiting our online link to the guide or our Events Calendar at www.sspl.org. There, you will find additional programming details, and if required, have the ability to register.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

How to Own Being Single on Valentine's Day

You don't need to have a plus one on Valentine's Day to have a good time. Take the focus off of Cupid, and look at more important things like taking care of yourself. Learn a few beauty secrets, taste some chocolate and share with others how you plan a special relaxing night at home. We will make a DIY sugar scrub, enjoy some essential oils and taste a few different chocolates. Join us February 14 from 4-5 p.m. Please register online.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

The Black Woods with Amy Godine

Join us in celebrating Black History Month as we welcome local author Amy Godine to discus her long awaited book, The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier. Godine's book chronicles the history of Black pioneers in New York's northern wilderness. From the late 1840s into the 1860s, they migrated to the Adirondacks to build farms and to vote. On their new-worked land, they could meet the $250 property requirement New York's constitution imposed on Black voters in 1821, and claim the rights of citizenship. Join us Thursday, February 15 at noon in the H. Dutcher Community Room. No registration required.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Homeschool Hang

Attention Homeschoolers! SSPL has a new program just for you! Join us for Homeschool Hangout Thursday, February 15 at 2 p.m. in the Crawshaw Story Room, when we'll discuss and learn about deep sea creatures. We will read books and do activities related to your favorite creepy creatures from the deepest and darkest parts of the oceans. No registration is required.
