Fall is here and with it comes an exciting lineup of events across the state! From harvest festivals to haunted train rides, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as the weather beckons us back outdoors.
October is a significant month as we celebrate Nevada Day and the incredible milestone of our 160th year of statehood. This anniversary is a time to reflect on Nevada’s rich history and the spirit of resilience and innovation that has shaped our state. I encourage you to join in the festivities, whether you’re like me and attending the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City, visiting a historical site, or simply taking a moment to appreciate all that makes the Silver State unique.
To celebrate Nevada Day, we’ve prepared something fun for you! Test your Silver State knowledge with my Nevada Day Quiz. Everyone who scores 100% (and yes, I encourage you to use Google!) will be entered into a drawing to win a Travel Nevada Swag Bag packed with Nevada goodies to show off your state pride. The contest is open until November 8.*

Also coming up—the 2024 Election! Early voting begins on October 19 and runs through November 1, with Election Day on November 5. Voting is the most powerful way to shape your communities and ensure your voice is heard. Your participation matters, so make a plan to vote early or head to the polls on Election Day. You can find all the information you need on the Nevada Secretary of State’s website.

Updates From Boards & Commissions | |
Nevada Commission on Tourism Approved $1 Million for Rural Nevada Tourism
The Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) approved funding for two Destination Development projects to expand tourism offerings in rural Nevada communities. Travel Nevada’s Destination Development Design (3D) Project is a long-range, tourism-based community planning program that allows rural communities across Nevada to expand their tourism economies.
Selected destinations complete six months of consulting that will provide guidance and recommendations for growing tourism in an authentic, sustainable way that supports the community’s culture, heritage, and character.
During a special commission meeting, NCOT commissioners approved funding for:
- Boulder City
- The Cultural Corridor (Carson City, Carson Valley, and Virginia City)
Along with those projects, NCOT selected two destinations to participate. Cohort three participants include:
- Walker Basin Conservancy
- Friends of Sutro Tunnel

Valley of Fire State Park Set to Temporarily Close in December
Both entrances to the park will remain closed to all vehicle and pedestrian access, including day-use, camping, wedding events, group outings, and special-use permits. The closure is happening due to the increase in traffic taking a toll on the state's infrastructure. Staff resources will be focused on improving road construction for the new visitor center, replacing fire rings in campgrounds, and upgrading restrooms.

Haas Automation Officially Breaks Ground on new Henderson Facility
State, county, and city officials recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Haas Automation facility, which is now under construction in West Henderson. Haas is the largest manufacturer of CNC machine tools in the country with plans to hire 500 workers within two years at its new 2.4 million-square-foot facility, and 1,400 employees within five years.

Rural Nevada Business and Education Expo | | |
The Lieutenant Governor’s Office of Small Business Advocacy and the White Pine Chamber of Commerce hosted the Rural Nevada Business and Education Expo in Ely on October 12.
This important event addressed economic development opportunities and the unique challenges faced by Nevada’s rural communities. In addition, it provided a valuable platform for community leaders, business owners, and policymakers to collaborate on growth and educational advancement strategies across rural Nevada.
The expo brought together key figures in Nevada’s government and local leadership, including Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar, State Senator Pete Goicoechea, Ely Mayor Nathan Robertson, White Pine County Commissioner Janet VanCamp, Nevada Assemblyman Burt Gurr, Ely City Councilwoman Dr. Jerri-Lynn Williams-Harper, Nevada Department of Agriculture Director J.J. Goicoechea, and Sheldon Mudd, Executive Director of the Northeastern Nevada Regional Development Authority.
Their presence underscored the shared commitment to addressing the distinct needs of rural communities, where economic growth, workforce development, and educational resources are essential for long-term success.

Latino Voices Town Hall
The Lieutenant Governor's Office of Small Business Advocacy recently hosted 'Latino Voices,' a town hall event in Carson City dedicated to amplifying and supporting Latino businesses in Northern Nevada. OSBA is committed to fostering growth and success for Latino entrepreneurs and ensuring they have the resources and support they need to thrive in our state.

Lieutenant Governor Anthony attended the Vegas Chamber Washington, D.C. Fly-In, along with other Nevada elected officials and business leaders. This was an opportunity to learn from policymakers about issues such as transportation, infrastructure, tourism, healthcare, education, and economic and workforce development.

Nevada Policy Annual Dinner
Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony served as a featured speaker at the recent "Spirit of Las Vegas" dinner hosted by Nevada Policy. In his speech, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the urgent need to reduce licensing requirements and streamline regulations across the state to stimulate growth, innovation, and job creation. He emphasized that these changes would make it easier for small business owners to turn their ideas into thriving enterprises without being hindered by excessive red tape.

Comet of the Century Visible in Northern Nevada Skies Through October 19 | | |
There’s a newly discovered comet in the sky! Northern Nevadans watching the southwestern evening sky will have an opportunity to see Comet C/2023 (Tsuchinsan-ATLAS), also called “The Comet of the Century” until Saturday.
Keep your eyes on the night sky, though, because the end of 2024 is packed with meteor showers! Below are the peaks of five meteor showers visible in the Northern Hemisphere for the rest of 2024.
- Oct. 21-22: Orionid meteor shower
- Nov. 4-5: Taurid meteor shower
- Nov. 17-18: Leonid meteor shower
- Dec. 13-14: Geminid meteor shower
- Dec. 21-22: Ursid meteor shower
