80th Anniversary of Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

When: Hiroshima: August 6th, Nagasaki: August 9th

(The image above and caption below are from our August 6th Social Media post. Follow us at Facebook and Instagram.)

The year 2025 marks 80 years since the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombings killed between 150,000-246,000 people. While this remains the only use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict today, it set a precedent of countries arming themselves with nuclear weapons, all of which could cause massive destruction.

Prayer: Pray and reflect on this passage of Gaudium et Spes 81: “Whatever be the facts about this method of deterrence, men should be convinced that the arms race in which an already considerable number of countries are engaged is not a safe way to preserve a steady peace, nor is the so-called balance resulting from this race a sure and authentic peace. Rather than being eliminated thereby, the causes of war are in danger of being gradually aggravated. While extravagant sums are being spent for the furnishing of ever new weapons, an adequate remedy cannot be provided for the multiple miseries afflicting the whole modern world. … The arms race is an utterly treacherous trap for humanity, and one which ensnares the poor to an intolerable degree.”

Action: Some people may feel called to action by peacefully demonstrating at nuclear facilities or contacting their representatives to make their voices heard. Learn about advocacy opportunities at www.lifeandjusticekcsj.org/advocacy.

Almsgiving: Pax Christi USA advocates for non-violence practices and promoting peaceful resolutions. For the 80th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they will be hosting webinars and prayer opportunities to promote remembrance and embracing peace moving forward. You can learn how to support them at https://paxchristiusa.org/donate-home/

When: August 16th-17th

The Life & Justice Campaign Second Collection will take place over the weekend of August 16-17, 2025. Contact Debbie Sheppard at 816.714.2367, sheppard@diocesekcsj.org to schedule one of these speakers at your parish.

Parishes: Please use either the graphic OR the separate text and QR code provided at www.lifeandjusticekcsj.org/campaign in your upcoming bulletins to share with parishioners. Thank you!

Feast of St. Jeanne Jugan

When: August 30th

We celebrate St. Jeanne Jugan on August 30th, a saint dear to our diocese and the Little Sisters of the Poor. St. Jeanne Jugan was raised by her mother after her father was lost at sea. Her heart was set to attend to the poor and vulnerable from an early age. Her vocation would be to found a religious community to care for the poor elderly people she came across. Even though she founded the community, by the end of her life she had been relegated to such a position that many of the younger sisters of the community didn’t know she was the foundress! She was only recently canonized in 2009.

The Little Sisters of the Poor are great defenders of the poor elderly in our community and we are so grateful for their mission and work. Visit their website at https://www.littlesistersofthepoorkansascity.org/ to support them and find volunteer opportunities.

Where: St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1357 NE 42nd Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64116

Reception to follow Mass.

Next Scheduled Missouri Execution of Lance Shockley

When: October 14th

"Regarding the death penalty, the first and foremost aspect of the Church’s teaching is the belief in the inherent dignity of the human person as created in the image and likeness of God. Our Catechism states that this dignity “is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes.” As such, the death penalty is “inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person” (Catholic Catechism 2267)." (Catholic Mobilizing Network)

Lance Shockley is scheduled to be executed on October 14th. Please contact Governor Kehoe and urge him to do everything in his power to stop Lance Shockley's execution. Stay tuned to www.madpmo.org for message prompts to write and send. Local churches and organizations will host prayer opportunities for the evening of the execution; please contact the Office of Life & Justice at voboril@diocesekcsj.org or 816-714-2375 to learn more.

MCC Corner

The Missouri Catholic Conference promotes the sanctity and dignity of human life in public policy advocacy in Jefferson City, MO on behalf of the Missouri Catholic Bishops. Proposed Bill HB254 would create a civil cause of action allowing claimants to seek damages from the state for wrongful conviction. Per the MCC: "As a matter of justice, persons wrongfully convicted deserve compensation. This legislation increases the compensation already provided under current law."
