Not Enough.
As Pastor Steve shared this past Sunday, the resurrection of Jesus shows us that death does not have the final word. While this world is broken, one day all things will be set right. 
 
The Cross is not enough.
 
It should go without saying that Jesus dying on the Cross for our sins is extremely important. But while the Cross is vital… by itself, is not enough. By itself, the Cross does not fix the problem or restore things to God’s intended goal. This can be shocking or confusing at first, because our faith is centered around the Cross. I mean, even the Apostle Paul himself declares that...
When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.  (1 Corinthians 2:1-2)
Paul preaches nothing but Christ, and him crucified. For Paul, the Cross of Christ is the whole deal. So, that would seem to suggest that the Cross is enough... that the Cross is all we need.
 
However, that is not the whole story. While the Cross is absolutely necessary... while our salvation could never be accomplished without the work of the Cross, where Jesus dealt with the penalty of our sin once and for all -- the Cross, by itself, does not get the entire job done. 
 
God's goal is more than just forgiveness.
God's goal is the full renewal of all things.
 
Paul himself, later on in the very same letter to the Corinthians, would say this...
...if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith... if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. (1 Corinthians 15:14, 17)
Here, everything with regard to our salvation hinges, not on the Cross, but on the Resurrection. If Christ is not raised, then we are still in our sin. While the work of the Cross deals with the guilt of our sin -- by itself, it doesn't provide the remedy for sin. It deals with the negative, but it does not provide the positive. The point being, we not only need our sin to be dealt with, we also need to be made new.
 
So, may we see that the salvation that God has supplied for us is about so much more than just our sins being forgiven. May we see that salvation is about nothing less than our full and total renewal.
 
May we walk in the Image of God this week!

Easter... Good Friday... the cross... the resurrection. They are events on a calendar that we celebrate. But they are much more than that.

May we understand them through the lens of our Father... that all of that took place because of His love for us.

May we understand them through the lens of our design... that Jesus did all of that to give us the opportunity to be made new... and to live in the power of that New-ness... through His Spirit.

May we live in light of the cross & resurrection each and every day as we love God with all that we have... and we love others... in the same way.
