Love.
As Pastor Steve shared with us this past Sunday, caring for others is a key aspect of our faith in Jesus. We are called to walk in humility and to put the needs of others above our own. We are to follow the example of Christ, who willingly laid down His own rights and privileges down for the sake of others. 
 
Love fulfills the Law.
 
As the Apostle Paul shares in numerous places, as followers of Jesus, above all else, we are called to love. Love God, love others. That’s the whole deal. All of the instructions contained all throughout the Old Covenant are fulfilled as we love.
 
We are to be known for our love.
 
Jesus tells us that the world should know that we are His followers, not simply because of our morality, not simply because of what we claim to believe, not because we go to church each week or because we read the Bible. No, the surrounding world is supposed to know that we are followers of Jesus for one primary reason – because of our love for one another. 
 
What love is.
 
However, we often distort or redefine what love is. We like to judge others for their behavior, but we still claim that we are doing so “out of love”. We use the idea of “sharing the Truth in love” to vent our self-righteous ideas and opinions at others. But this is not love for others, this is love for our own opinions, our own version of the “truth”. 
 
What love looks like.
 
If we want to know what real love looks like, we have a couple of options. First, we can look at the life of Jesus. Jesus shows us what love in action looks like. Jesus did speak harshly on occasion, but notice… He was always gracious to the sinner and the outsider. Who were Jesus’ harshest words always directed at? The religious crowd… to church people, like you and I.
 
What love does.
 
Another option to see what love looks like is to read the descriptions about love in the Bible. We are told that love expresses itself in being patient and in showing kindness. That love is not self-focused or envious, but that love truly seeks the good of others. We are told that love does not keep a record of wrongs, but that love covers over a mountain of sins. 
 
So, may we make it our goal, not to be religious, but to be loving. May we be known, not for our opinions, but for our kindness. May our voices not be filled with complaints, but with grace towards others. And may we not be a People who are motivated to “fight for their rights”, but who are willing to give themselves away… out of love.
 
May we walk in the image of God this week!

Scripture of the Week
Romans 13:8-9 (NIV) -- ...whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Good teammates... that's what Jesus is calling us to be.

The very real, and vulnerable examples of Timothy, Paul himself, and Epaphroditus... along with the challlenges to those back in Philippi... gave us great examples of what being a good teammate looks like.

For those who have made Eaglebrook their "team" - their church family and community, may we continue to learn what it means to connect to one another... to connect to God corporately as a body... to get equipped to equip... and to ultimately make an impact on this world for Jesus.

We dive into chapter 3 of Philippians this Sunday! I look forward to worshipping with you, as we worship as a "team"!
