LIFE INSURANCE AND ANNUITIES: REGULATORY MOMENTUM CONTINUES

Regulators remained active in August, focusing on clearer disclosures and stronger suitability oversight.

Agentic artificial intelligence is becoming more common. This technology can perform multi‑step tasks such as reviewing suitability documents, flagging compliance issues, assisting underwriting teams, and generating summaries. It improves accuracy and reduces administrative delays.

Regulators continued refining the Annuity Disclosure Model Regulation and the 2027 Valuation Manual. The updated Annuity Buyer’s Guide is still under review, with an emphasis on shorter and more consumer‑friendly explanations. Market‑conduct examinations and sales‑practice oversight remain priority areas.

Summary: Regulators want clearer disclosures and better suitability processes, supported by new artificial intelligence tools.

INDUSTRY TRENDS: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND INCOME FOCUSED RETIREMENT PLANNING

Carriers continued adopting artificial intelligence to speed up underwriting and improve compliance documentation.

Registered index‑linked annuities gained additional attention. These annuities offer partial protection against market losses, growth potential tied to market indices, and structured outcomes over set terms. They provide more growth potential than fixed indexed annuities while limiting the downside risk of variable annuities.

Demand for income‑focused retirement solutions continued to rise, supported by strong carrier financial performance and ongoing modernization of digital processes.

Summary: Artificial intelligence is improving efficiency, and registered index‑linked annuities continue to grow in popularity among retirement‑focused consumers.

LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE: HYBRID INNOVATION EXPANDS

Hybrid long‑term care products remain the most rapidly evolving part of the long‑term care market.

New York Life introduced an indemnity‑style benefit option for its Asset Flex product. This allows policyholders to receive cash benefits that can be used for home care, facility care, caregiver support, or home modifications. The industry continues moving toward consumer‑directed benefits that simplify claims and reduce paperwork.

Hybrid long‑term care and life insurance combinations, as well as long‑term care and annuity combinations, remain attractive because they avoid the “use it or lose it” nature of traditional long‑term care insurance.

Summary: Hybrid long‑term care products offer flexible, cash‑based benefits that adapt to real‑world care needs.

LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE: HYBRID INNOVATION EXPANDS

There were no new disability‑specific regulatory changes in August, but claim trends continue to shift.

Mental‑health‑related disability claims are increasing, especially in employer‑provided long‑term disability plans. Higher‑income earners remain exposed to benefit caps and taxable payouts in group disability coverage. Individual disability insurance remains the most reliable way to secure income replacement above employer plan limits.

Summary: Claim patterns are changing, making it important for clients to review long‑term disability caps, taxable benefits, and definitions of disability.
