DEAR READERS:

CABARET ON THE GREEN AT AJ'S LAST SATURDAY:
What a wonderful night we had last  week with  15 amazing singers and special guest pianist RICHARD BERENT. My opening song was "Are The Stars Out Tonight" then it was on to 'our stars that were out tonight' beginning with MARCIA HARP and "Maybe This Time" and in the second round she sang "How do You Keep The Music Playing". Then it was BARVARA FRANTZ who got a request for one of her crowd pleasers, "Love Potion #9" then later it was "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue". THE FORMELOZA'S were there with a nice table right up front, with BETH singing "Fly Me to The Moon", and "Body And Soul", and FERDIE doing "You're Still You", and "What Kind Of Fool Am I". WILSON RAISER was back again, this time singing "The Impossible Dream" ending with a roar of cheers. Following him was ALAN JON singing "My Favorite Year" and in honor of one of our other special guest singers, sang "Jackie" by JACQUE BREL. Then we had JEAN SORF singing "What I Did For Love" for some special friends in the audience, and then we sang "Happy Birthday" to her with a cake and candles, then later she sang "If He Walked Into My Life Today" followed by lots of cheers and applause. DOUG GRAHAM sang "She A Women" from Kiss of The Spider Woman, and later KANDLER & EBBS' "The World Goes Round". LINDSAY OUELLETTE brought two of our favorite songs, "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby", and "Someone To Watch Over Me". Our only first-time singer of the night was a very talented local woman named SHEILA JAMES who just discovered us and vice-versa, who brought down the house with her "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" and her version of "Cabaret" with  a  noticeable  similarity to 'LIZA', hopefully she will be back again and again and you'll all get a chance to hear her. And no longer a newcomer, DAVID BADER has become one of our regulars and part of our 'family', singing "It's Only A Paper Moon" but could not stay for the second round. Then it was the return of LAURIE DEANE singing a  great  song she wrote called "Tonights The Night", and a very moving "My Way". Then 'The Desert's Songbird', VICKI KNIGHT took the stage to sing "The More I See You", and a standing ovation for "The Wind  Beneath  My Wings". Next it was TONY DE SIENA doing "My Funny Valentine". Then it was a rare treat to have the  magnificent   TONIA BERN CAMPBELL with her wonderful stories and singing "If We Only Have Love" that you can see her sing at JIM CARUSO'S CAST PARTY in New York, with our guest pianist Richard, at  Tonia at The Cast Party , and her second song was "Old Friend" as a duet with Richard. It was a very emotional end of the night for me since we sing two rounds  made the last two songs of the night, "Cabaret" that was a MARGE HARRIS standard, followed by Vicki singing "The Wind Beneath My Wings", which she often did as a duet with Marge. Then at the very end I made the sad announcement of the passing of one of our regulars, LARRY HARRIS. I am posting a remembrance of Larry in the pink article box below. I hope to see you all this Saturday night when we will have JOEL BAKER back on piano. Until then, keep singing!

BILL CLIFFORD put on a terrific show last week with almost 120 in attendance and two standing ovations. This week is going to be another special show with KIM HALTER & FRIENDS with a tribute to the music of JOHNNY MERCER including a multi-media display of photos and film clips, this one is going to be really special. Let's see if he can top Bill's audience numbers? I hope to see you there!

SOME SAD NEWS
Local entertainer Larry Harris passed away last week. Larry is remembered as a colorful character at my weekly Cabaret Open Mics, singing his favorite songs like his signature "That's Life". Larry, along with wife Marge, moved back to Wisconsin around two years ago but made several trips back to the desert to see friends and fellow singers at AJ's On The Green whom everyone of us agrees is more like extended family. I know they join me in sending our  condolences to Marge Harris and their family and won't them to know Larry will be missed.

I wanted to posy a photo of Larry but could only find this copy of the poster and press notices for his and Marge's show they did at Arthur Newman Theater.

It would be hard to find anyone in the desert who has not seen Marge and Larry Harris singing somewhere. In a production at Palm Canyon Theater, an open mic, piano bar, country club, charity event, or even the Elks Lodge. Known by many as "The Music Lovers" they are perhaps the closest thing to "Steve and Edie" that we locals have. Marge is usually the big, brassy, belter, while Larry commands the role of balladeer, singing solos some beautiful duets.

You can see them perform their latest show, "The Music Of Our Lives" at The Arthur Newman Theater in the Joslyn Center on Sunday, October 14th at 2 PM. Joining them is pianist Joel Baker, George Cebra on bass and Elvio Ditta on drums. You can be sure there will be lots of Broadway showstoppers, some popular hits from the past, and some comedy material thrown in for good measure.

DO YOU REMEMBER THURSDAY NIGHTS IN THE
TEN20 LOUNGE AT THE BEAUTIFUL BEL AGE HOTEL
IN WEST HOLLYWOOD?

IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY BUT IT WAS REALLY AROUND 2003 - 2006. THE NIGHT STARTED WITH "THE GUEST STARS SHOWCASE" AND 4 PERFORMERS DOING A SHORT SET AROUND 15 MINUTES AND 3 TO 4 SONGS. RON SNYDER, THE HOUSE PIANIST, PLAYED FOR THEM AND AFTER A SHORT BREAK WE CONTINUED THE NIGHT WITH OPEN MIC. IT REALLY WAS A FABULOUS ROOM WITH GREAT FOOD, GORGEOUS BABY GRAND, AND THAT VIEW!

I HAD SO MANY DIGITAL PHOTOS FROM THOSE NIGHTS BUT LOST THEM WHEN MY COMPUTER DIED ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO. BUT I RECENTLY FOUND THE PAPTER PROGRAM I PUT TOGETHER FROM THE VERY LAST NIGHT THERE AFTER THE HOTEL WAS SOLD, IT'S NOW CALLED LONDON WEST. ANYWAY, I COMPILED A LIST OF ALL 383 GUEST STARS FROM THE 140 SHOWS ON A SPECIAL WEB PAGE IN CASE ANYONE WANTS TO SEE ALL THE INCREDIBLE SINGERS WHO CAME TO BE PART OF IT. I ALSO HAVE LOTS OF OLD "MINI - DVD'S" TAKEN OF A LOT OF THE SHOWS. ONCE I LEARN HOW TO TRANSFER THEM TO THE WEB I WILL POST THEM FOR YOU TO SEE.
