WHAT HAPPENED ON OUR LAST CABARET ON THE GREEN FRIDAY:

Friday night at AJ'S we had a good crowd but a little short on number of singers. Lucky for us we all got to sing 4 songs. WAYNE ABRAVANEL was on piano filling in for JOEL BAKER who is on vacation. Wayne's songs for the night were "I've Got The World On A String", "I've Got Rhythm". "Corner Of The Sky" and "Piano Man". Mine were "This Can't Be Love", "The Way You Look Tonight", "I've Got You Under My Skin", and "Old Friend". Then we had DAVID BADER with "Route 66", "Birth Of The Blues", "One For My Baby", "Learning The Blues", and "It Never Was You". PEGGY GOHL came in with a party of 6 for dinner and to hear her sing, "Nobody Does it Like Me", "Misty", a medley with "I'm Not At All In Love", "This Can't Be Love" and I'm In Love With A Wonderful Guy", she also sang "The Lady Is A Tramp", and That's Amore'". BETH FORMELOZA sang "Harbor Lights", "I Will Always Love You", "A Thrill Devin", "That's Life", and "Moon Light In Vermont". FERDIE FORMELOZA did "You're Still You", "More", "Ir's Impossible", "Who Can I Turn To", and "All The Way". DOUG GRAHAM sang "Summertime" with "Soon It's Gonna Rain", Till I Hear You Sing Once More", "Here's To Life", "People", and "Blackberry Winter". And TONY DE SIENA sang "When I Fall In Love", ""I Left My Heart In San Francisco", and "My Funny Valentine". We are back again for the regular Saturday night Cabaret On The Green Open Mic with our guest pianist RICHARD BERENT and lots of great singers and some special surprise guests too. Starting next week we will be back to our usual Saturday only show, and Fridays will be DOUG MACDONALD with his "Jazz Jam" show with lots of musicians sitting in along with a few singers too. Reservations are always welcome, call 760-202-1111.

CABARET ON THE GREEN AT AJ'S LAST SATURDAY:

What a crazy-good Saturday night at AJ's! Lucky 13 singers with RICHARD BERENT on piano. i opened the show with "Anything Goes" and it seemed to set the theme for the night. First, we had such a big audience and most were new people coming for the first time and it was great to have them singing their praises so to speak. The real singers where DAVID BADER with "Beyond The Sea", "Zing, Went The Strings Of My Heart", and "One For My Baby". WISON RAISER joined us with his songs  "We Can Be Kind", and "Maybe This Time". Then PATTI GALLAGHER sang "My Funny Valentine", and "Think Of Me". JEROME ELLIOTT with "It's Impossible", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", and "I Get Along Without You Very Well" with "Wish You Were Here". DOG GRAHAM did "Gimme Gimme", and "First You Dream". Next it was PAT MCCANN singing "On A Clear Day", and "Our Love I Here To Stay". BARBARA FRANTZ was there with 3 songs, "Moon Glow", "Love Potion #9", and "Good Morning Heartache". V.V. MARTIN had "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend", "Cry", and "If You Love Me Really Love Me". BRAD SIEPLE only stayed for one song, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling". So did ROY PROVIANCE doing "It's Not Easy Being Green". MARIANA O. sang "Dark Eyes", and "Autumn Leaves". DONNY TEETERS sang "My One And Only You", "Strangers In The Night", and "Since I Fell For You". We had TONY DI SIENA with "God Bless The Child". And a special surprise guest, TONIA BERN CAMPBELL did "La Vie En Rose", and "What I Did For Love". We also have one birthday for NAOMI who turned 12 and was loving being out with her family group of 8 for dinner and her first show. Such a sensational night of talent and a lot of fun. PLEASE NOTE: JOEL BAKER will NOT be back - so once again we have RICHARD BERENT on piano, and don't forget we are back to our Saturday show only so make your reservations now.

LAST SEASON AND WILL RETURN WITH A CHRISTMAS SHOW
IN DECEMBER.

HERE IS MY COLUMN FOR THE CURRENT ISSUE:

JULY - AUGUST 2019 PALM SPRINGS COLUMN

Summer is finally here and we are slowing down but there are a few new announcements. For one,   Cabaret On The Green Open Mic that I host with   Joel Baker on piano over at  AJ' On The Green on Saturday nights has asked us to also do a Friday night show. This one will be one hour earlier from 6:30 to 9:00 PM, I'm thinking of calling it  Casual Cabaret Fridays? Another piece of news is a change of venue for  PS Underground, the popular dinner and show co-produced by  Michael Fietsam, who is more hands on when it comes to the shows, and   Dave Horgen who brings his flair to the dining experience are on the move. Since 2014 they have sold out their extravaganzas with imaginative themes and make use of the many talented local performers. Where did they go? It's the perfect locations in the former space occupied  by Appetito Restaurant next to   Koffi and across the street from   Ace Hotel.  To find out what's on the bill go to psunderground.com. Other news is what happened to their old room,  Club Rouge? Located behind   Pete's Hideaway; it is now   The Indigo Room. They will present themed dinner and show productions developed in part by producer, radio show host, and entertainer   Bonnie Gillgallon. Although they have two or three shows completed, their web site is still under construction. I will have more information in the next issue. Over at  M ichael Holmes Purple Room they will be on hiatus for July and August but you can check out the line up at purpleroompalmsprings.com.   Oscar's has turned up their entertainment by adding a piano bar out on their patio with nightly entertainment in addition to the weekly line up inside in it's supper club including   The Sensational Jewels,  Roberta Linn, the Celebrity Female Impersonation Dinner Show, Bitchiest Brunch Sundays, plus special guests coming soon including   Sandra Bernhard , Barbara Eden, and Michele Lee . Also new, we can now add   Studio  to the entertainment scene now that they brought in a baby grand piano. They have been trying out different nights and different pianist to find the right mix, but so far it has been  Tommy Dodson, Brian Miller, and   Mark Lee.

Something that isn't cooling down is the Cabaret On Sundays Series at the Arthur Newman Theater. The summer season kicked off June 2nd with a sold out performance by Roberta Linn. Coming to the series in July 7 is Michael Shapiro in Fabulous Places with Stuart Elster on piano, Patti Gallagher and Mark Almy will team up with Joel Baker on piano on July 14 for Together Again, Frank Duncan and Bruce Hall are there July 21 with their show Side By Side Again with Nick Vega on piano, Cody Wood is set for July 28 with This Songs For You, then for August 4 will be Lisa Donahey in Jazzbaret with David Arana on piano, returning with a new show is Gary Lynn Floyd, this time he will playing piano for Welcome To My World, also returning is the popular Marcia Harp with Jeffrey Lesser on piano for Where Was I When I Needed Me, and August 25 brings David Duvall from Seattle with himself on piano with So Naughty, So Nice: Songs Bobby Short Taught Me. Tickets are all $15 and the summer series continues every Sunday at 2 PM and running through September 29, see the complete schedule at lesmichaels.com.

Many venues will be closed or taking time off this summer but there are still lots of options like; Melvyn's at the Ingelside Inn, where Mikael Healey holds court on the piano several nights a week including the infamous Sunday Jam where local musicians come to jam and special invited guest singers come to do sets, often you'll find Sharon Sills, Melba Miller, Paul Kay, Hope Diamond and more. Taking some time off until August 2nd is Derrik Lewis on piano and Jeff Stover on bass ith his trio who entertain Tuesdays and Thursdays in The Coral Seas Lounge at Tropicale.  The very popular The Mod Squad Variety Show, that recently celebrated one year, is next door at Copa Night Club on Thursdays with Francesca Amari, Jeff Stewart, and Wayne Abravanel, followed by Bella Da Ball and Lipstick Cabaret Review. Also at AJ's On The Green, Cabaret On The Green Open Mic with Joel Baker on piano and Les Michaels as MC is Friday and Saturday nights, Bill Marx is there on Mondays, then Doug MacDonald and Larry Halloway and The Wednesday Night Jazz Jam, currently Thursdays are Richard Bono and Popee in rotation with various other artists, and they are closed Sundays and Tuesday through summer. Thursday Open Mic at Frankie's with Joel Baker on piano continues, and owners Frankie Mamone and Luca Arias are looking forward to the upcoming season to begin booking shows in their beautiful jazz supper club and cabaret room with the help of Hope Diamond. Stacy's Piano Bar has weekly entertainers like Ron Pass, Rick Ross, Robin Miller, Viki Dee, Gregg Akkerman, Mark Lee, Shalini Varghese and more. Ron Pass also plays Tuesday - Saturday nights at Morgan's La Quinta, Keisha D is at Wang's the 1st and 3rd Sundays with and I believe she has been added to Wednesday nights too. Rose Mallett is at Woody's on Fridays. Michael D'Angelo is at Chef George's Picasso Lounge Tuesdays & Thursdays. And correction: Denny Pezzin is at the Sonora Grill at Embassy Suites Fridays and Saturdays. Frank's Place at Indian Wells Resort is taking summer as well asVicky's of Santa Fe. Newer venues to also be adding entertaiment are AMP Sports Lounge is where Eve Holmes can be found on select nights and Runway has Robecca Clark on Sundays 3 to 5 pm. Moving on to the theater's, there isn't much to report as they have pretty much gone dark until September aside from Palm Canyon Theatre with their July 5 - 14 production of Spring Awakening. Some of the theaters have already announced their 2019 - 2010 shows and it looks like we are going to see even more new productions this season. I'll keep you posted here or see my weekly newsletter link at Life Is A Cabaret Newsletter.

THE SUMMER SEASON SHOWS:
DO YOU REMEMBER THURSDAY NIGHTS IN THE
TEN20 LOUNGE AT THE BEAUTIFUL BEL AGE HOTEL
IN WEST HOLLYWOOD?

IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY BUT IT WAS REALLY AROUND 2003 - 2006. THE NIGHT STARTED WITH "THE GUEST STARS SHOWCASE" AND 4 PERFORMERS DOING A SHORT SET AROUND 15 MINUTES AND 3 TO 4 SONGS. RON SNYDER, THE HOUSE PIANIST, PLAYED FOR THEM AND AFTER A SHORT BREAK WE CONTINUED THE NIGHT WITH OPEN MIC. IT REALLY WAS A FABULOUS ROOM WITH GREAT FOOD, GORGEOUS BABY GRAND, AND THAT VIEW!

I HAD SO MANY DIGITAL PHOTOS FROM THOSE NIGHTS BUT LOST THEM WHEN MY COMPUTER DIED ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO. BUT I RECENTLY FOUND THE PAPTER PROGRAM I PUT TOGETHER FROM THE VERY LAST NIGHT THERE AFTER THE HOTEL WAS SOLD, IT'S NOW CALLED LONDON WEST. ANYWAY, I COMPILED A LIST OF ALL 383 GUEST STARS FROM THE 140 SHOWS ON A SPECIAL WEB PAGE IN CASE ANYONE WANTS TO SEE ALL THE INCREDIBLE SINGERS WHO CAME TO BE PART OF IT. I ALSO HAVE LOTS OF OLD "MINI - DVD'S" TAKEN OF A LOT OF THE SHOWS. ONCE I LEARN HOW TO TRANSFER THEM TO THE WEB I WILL POST THEM FOR YOU TO SEE.
