CABARET ON THE GREEN AT AJ'S LAST FRIDAY:
WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT: Another terrific night of talent at AJ's for Cabaret On The Green's Friday Open Mic with 10 singers and time to go around the list 3 times. JOEL BAKER started off the show with
"The Lady From 29 Palms" and later did "This Can't Be Love", and "Pencil Thin Mustache" and then it was me with"The Lady Is A Tramp", and later "Just In Time", and "The Way You Look Tonight". Our first special guest singer was DAVID BADER with "Learning The Blues", "One For My Baby", and "Mack The Knife". BETH FORMELOZA did "Ever Green", and a duet with Joel doing his NEIL DIAMOND voice for "You Don't Send Me Flowers", and by request "New York State Of Mind". FERDIE FORMELOZA sang "You're Still You", "Fools Rush In", and "What Kind Of Fool Am I". JIM ANDERS sang "Day After Day", "Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter", and "Rockin' Robin". STEVE FOSSUM only did two songs, "Bushel And A Peck" and "Chattanoga Choo Choo". FRED MILLER was there and sang "That Old Feeling", "Embraceable You", and "Don't Blame Me". TONY DI SIENA sang "My funny Valentine, "When I Fall In Love" and "You've Changed". GREGG MARX is in town from LA and came to sing "Down With Love", "Slow Boat To China", and "Old Devil Moon", and he said he'll be there tonight too. And we have not seen GINA ZOLLMAN in so long so we loved having her there for "Falling In Love Again" with the second half in German, also "Someone To Watch Over Me", and "Just In Time". Also there was MARK RICHARDS with "All The Time", "Edelweiss", and "I Am What I Am". And with a few minutes left I closed with "Old Friend" So there you have it, and you can see more tonight for the Saturday Cabaret On The Green Open Mic - only at AJ'S ON THE GREEN. Come on over for dinner and the show, there's no cover but reservation are requested if you are coming for dinner and want a table in the showroom by calling 760-202-1111.

CABARET ON THE GREEN AT AJ'S LAST SATURDAY:
WHAT HAPPENED AT SATURDAYS CABARET ON THE GREEN OPEN MIC AT AJ'S: It was a stellar night of over the top talent!!! JOEL BAKER started us off with "It's A Grand Night For Singing" and later it was "I Wish I Were In Love Again". My songs were "Too Marvelous For Words" and later "I Could Write A Book". We had a total of 13 singers with most staying to do 3 songs starting with JEROME ELLIOTT and a really beautiful song "I'd Rather Be Sailing", then he did "On A Clear Day", and nailed "My Romance". DOUG GRAHAM had some good choices including "The Place Where Lost things Go", "If Ever I Would Leave You", and "Corner Of The Sky". Next up BARBARA FRANTZ was a big hit with her songs, "Mean To Me", "Someone To Watch Over Me", and "I Don't Know Why I Just Do". V.V. MARTIN did a great job on "Can't Help Loving That Man Of Mine", "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", then she sang in French no less, "Hymne L'Amore" or in English "If You Love Me, Really Love Me". DAVID BADER had some new songs like "Just In Time", "Zing Went the Strings Of My Heart", and "Young At Heart". NONI LAMBERTSON had some great stories with her songs, "Hello Young Lovers", "More Than You Know", and "Not Too Young To Know". JOSEPH DIETZ only sang one song and wouldn't you know I forget to write it down beause I didn't know it but asked to see his sheet music because it looked to be at least 75 years old but Joel knew it and did some back up singing for it, I remember it had a Hymn quality. We also had MARCIA HARP there for her songs for the night; "Who Can I Turn To", a perfect "Over The Rainbow", and "The Best Thing You've Ever Done". The guy who goes my his initials, JB, brought a very nice "You Fill Up My Senses", and "I Dreamed A Dream". Then we had MATT BORZELLO doing beautiful job of "Pieces O Dreams" and "If She Walked Into My Life Today". And all ready for her show Sunday (today), PATTI GALLAGHER came in to sing "Warm All Over", and "Wishing You Were Here Again". TONY DI SIENA sang one song "God Bless The Child". and we featured ALICE for a medley of songs played on the piano because she played at AJ's on Friday night and she will be back again this coming Thursday too. And back again from Friday night, GREGG MARX was in town from LA and did some fabulous songs including "Ive Got A Crush On You", "Call Me Irresponsible", and closed the night with "Smile". We also were happy to have JOHN DANCER & MIMI with us in the audience, they are such good supporters of our Cabaret family and help us to get the word out that we have the best shows in town. We also found out that we will be returning to do the next two Fridays which is great news. So we'll see you next weekend! And remember that AJ's On The Green has entertainment every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Come by and have a great dinner and hear some great music, tell Lee Lovitt that Les Michaels sent you...

PLEASE DON'T FORGET WE WILL HAVE OPEN MIC ON FRIDAYS AND SATURDAYS. We are back again on JULY 13th!

Only thing different is on FRIDAYS THE START TIME WILL BE 6:30 PM AND GO TO 9:00 PM. So you have a choice to come to either night - or both! See you then.

AJ'S PARKING NOTE: There is a HUGE parking lot just past the front lot on your left with and rear entrance to AJ's. Remember to make reservations!

NEW CHANGES IN MAKING RESERVATIONS: YOU MAY NOW LEAVE YOUR NAME & NUMBER ON THE ANSWERING MACHINE FOR A CALL BACK - but you can probably be safe leaving: YOUR NAME, DAY YOU WANT RESERVATIONS, TIME, AND NUMBER IN PARTY, & if you have a favorite table and know the table number leave that too and they will do their best but it may not be guaranteed.

PLEASE, won't you click  YELP US and tell your friends too that we have the best singers in town and we do it LIVE!  EVERY YELP HELPS

I know the 96 people who bought tickets for PATTI GALLAGHER & MARK ALMY's show really loved it and if yo come to see this Sundays show you'll be very entertained as well. BRUCE HALL & FRANK DUNCAN have performed this show to 3 sold out audiences earlier this year at DESERT ROSE PLAYHOUSE so we can't be happier to have our audience see them too.

HE AND BECKIE DID ONE OF MY CABARET ON SUNDAYS SHOWS
LAST SEASON AND WILL RETURN WITH A CHRISTMAS SHOW
IN DECEMBER.

HERE IS MY COLUMN FOR THE CURRENT ISSUE:

JULY - AUGUST 2019 PALM SPRINGS COLUMN

Summer is finally here and we are slowing down but there are a few new announcements. For one,   Cabaret On The Green Open Mic that I host with   Joel Baker on piano over at  AJ' On The Green on Saturday nights has asked us to also do a Friday night show. This one will be one hour earlier from 6:30 to 9:00 PM, I'm thinking of calling it  Casual Cabaret Fridays? Another piece of news is a change of venue for  PS Underground, the popular dinner and show co-produced by  Michael Fietsam, who is more hands on when it comes to the shows, and   Dave Horgen who brings his flair to the dining experience are on the move. Since 2014 they have sold out their extravaganzas with imaginative themes and make use of the many talented local performers. Where did they go? It's the perfect locations in the former space occupied  by Appetito Restaurant next to   Koffi and across the street from   Ace Hotel.  To find out what's on the bill go to psunderground.com. Other news is what happened to their old room,  Club Rouge? Located behind   Pete's Hideaway; it is now   The Indigo Room. They will present themed dinner and show productions developed in part by producer, radio show host, and entertainer   Bonnie Gillgallon. Although they have two or three shows completed, their web site is still under construction. I will have more information in the next issue. Over at  M ichael Holmes Purple Room they will be on hiatus for July and August but you can check out the line up at purpleroompalmsprings.com.   Oscar's has turned up their entertainment by adding a piano bar out on their patio with nightly entertainment in addition to the weekly line up inside in it's supper club including   The Sensational Jewels,  Roberta Linn, the Celebrity Female Impersonation Dinner Show, Bitchiest Brunch Sundays, plus special guests coming soon including   Sandra Bernhard , Barbara Eden, and Michele Lee . Also new, we can now add   Studio  to the entertainment scene now that they brought in a baby grand piano. They have been trying out different nights and different pianist to find the right mix, but so far it has been  Tommy Dodson, Brian Miller, and   Mark Lee.

Something that isn't cooling down is the Cabaret On Sundays Series at the Arthur Newman Theater. The summer season kicked off June 2nd with a sold out performance by Roberta Linn. Coming to the series in July 7 is Michael Shapiro in Fabulous Places with Stuart Elster on piano, Patti Gallagher and Mark Almy will team up with Joel Baker on piano on July 14 for Together Again, Frank Duncan and Bruce Hall are there July 21 with their show Side By Side Again with Nick Vega on piano, Cody Wood is set for July 28 with This Songs For You, then for August 4 will be Lisa Donahey in Jazzbaret with David Arana on piano, returning with a new show is Gary Lynn Floyd, this time he will playing piano for Welcome To My World, also returning is the popular Marcia Harp with Jeffrey Lesser on piano for Where Was I When I Needed Me, and August 25 brings David Duvall from Seattle with himself on piano with So Naughty, So Nice: Songs Bobby Short Taught Me. Tickets are all $15 and the summer series continues every Sunday at 2 PM and running through September 29, see the complete schedule at lesmichaels.com.

Many venues will be closed or taking time off this summer but there are still lots of options like; Melvyn's at the Ingelside Inn, where Mikael Healey holds court on the piano several nights a week including the infamous Sunday Jam where local musicians come to jam and special invited guest singers come to do sets, often you'll find Sharon Sills, Melba Miller, Paul Kay, Hope Diamond and more. Taking some time off until August 2nd is Derrik Lewis on piano and Jeff Stover on bass ith his trio who entertain Tuesdays and Thursdays in The Coral Seas Lounge at Tropicale.  The very popular The Mod Squad Variety Show, that recently celebrated one year, is next door at Copa Night Club on Thursdays with Francesca Amari, Jeff Stewart, and Wayne Abravanel, followed by Bella Da Ball and Lipstick Cabaret Review. Also at AJ's On The Green, Cabaret On The Green Open Mic with Joel Baker on piano and Les Michaels as MC is Friday and Saturday nights, Bill Marx is there on Mondays, then Doug MacDonald and Larry Halloway and The Wednesday Night Jazz Jam, currently Thursdays are Richard Bono and Popee in rotation with various other artists, and they are closed Sundays and Tuesday through summer. Thursday Open Mic at Frankie's with Joel Baker on piano continues, and owners Frankie Mamone and Luca Arias are looking forward to the upcoming season to begin booking shows in their beautiful jazz supper club and cabaret room with the help of Hope Diamond. Stacy's Piano Bar has weekly entertainers like Ron Pass, Rick Ross, Robin Miller, Viki Dee, Gregg Akkerman, Mark Lee, Shalini Varghese and more. Ron Pass also plays Tuesday - Saturday nights at Morgan's La Quinta, Keisha D is at Wang's the 1st and 3rd Sundays with and I believe she has been added to Wednesday nights too. Rose Mallett is at Woody's on Fridays. Michael D'Angelo is at Chef George's Picasso Lounge Tuesdays & Thursdays and at the Sonora Grill at Embassy Suites Fridays and Saturdays. Frank's Place at Indian Wells Resort is taking summer as well asVicky's of Santa Fe. Newer venues to also be adding entertaiment are AMP Sports Lounge is where Eve Holmes can be found on select nights and Runway has Robecca Clark on Sundays 3 to 5 pm. Moving on to the theater's, there isn't much to report as they have pretty much gone dark until September aside from Palm Canyon Theatre with their July 5 - 14 production of Spring Awakening. Some of the theaters have already announced their 2019 - 2010 shows and it looks like we are going to see even more new productions this season. I'll keep you posted here or see my weekly newsletter link at Life Is A Cabaret Newsletter.

THE SUMMER SEASON SHOWS:
DO YOU REMEMBER THURSDAY NIGHTS IN THE
TEN20 LOUNGE AT THE BEAUTIFUL BEL AGE HOTEL
IN WEST HOLLYWOOD?

IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY BUT IT WAS REALLY AROUND 2003 - 2006. THE NIGHT STARTED WITH "THE GUEST STARS SHOWCASE" AND 4 PERFORMERS DOING A SHORT SET AROUND 15 MINUTES AND 3 TO 4 SONGS. RON SNYDER, THE HOUSE PIANIST, PLAYED FOR THEM AND AFTER A SHORT BREAK WE CONTINUED THE NIGHT WITH OPEN MIC. IT REALLY WAS A FABULOUS ROOM WITH GREAT FOOD, GORGEOUS BABY GRAND, AND THAT VIEW!

I HAD SO MANY DIGITAL PHOTOS FROM THOSE NIGHTS BUT LOST THEM WHEN MY COMPUTER DIED ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO. BUT I RECENTLY FOUND THE PAPTER PROGRAM I PUT TOGETHER FROM THE VERY LAST NIGHT THERE AFTER THE HOTEL WAS SOLD, IT'S NOW CALLED LONDON WEST. ANYWAY, I COMPILED A LIST OF ALL 383 GUEST STARS FROM THE 140 SHOWS ON A SPECIAL WEB PAGE IN CASE ANYONE WANTS TO SEE ALL THE INCREDIBLE SINGERS WHO CAME TO BE PART OF IT. I ALSO HAVE LOTS OF OLD "MINI - DVD'S" TAKEN OF A LOT OF THE SHOWS. ONCE I LEARN HOW TO TRANSFER THEM TO THE WEB I WILL POST THEM FOR YOU TO SEE.

"THE POWER OF FORTITUDE"

When you feel like giving up, remind yourself why you started it in the first place. If the reason is still there, if it sparks joy, keep going.

Just because you got frustrated or disappointed, is no reason to give up on your goal. Relive your purpose, and let it re-energize you.

Though the setbacks do sting, they can also teach and focus and  motivate you. What a shame it would be to waste it all by giving up.

You have the intelligence and desire, the talent and strength to persist. Use the power of fortitude, and bring joy and value to your life.
