Just One More Thing …

He had done it. He had committed the perfect murder. There were no loose ends; he was sure of that. At least he had been sure until that nosy little detective had come snooping around. What was his name? Oh, yes, Columbo, that was it.
Now the doggone pest of a man was back. He was asking more questions, saying that certain things about the crime scene just bothered him. Now, he simply stood there, with that ludicrous smile on his face. It was just plain disconcerting. Finally, after a couple more questions, he sighed heavily, thanked him for taking the time to answer, and began to leave. Relief flooded over the crafty and arrogant murderer. But then, the door re-opened—just a crack, mind you—enough for Lieutenant Columbo to slip his head back in, saying, “Oh, just one more thing!”
Lieutenant Columbo is like a bulldog. As quirky as the guy is, he doesn’t give up or let go and struggles to the end to bring about true justice.
Maybe we all need to be a little more like Columbo when it comes to things that really matter, like our Christian faith, absolute standards of right and wrong, and the noble ideals of truth and justice.

(Three-Year Lectionary) A Life Thought in the Church Year for September 6 – Pentecost 15: In faith, as God’s watchmen, we humbly proclaim His Word. The faithful Word gives a true warning to the wicked (Ezekiel 33:7-8). We are called to speak boldly when lives are heartlessly ended and when God’s gifts are mocked. We also rejoice as we teach about forgiveness. In Psalm 32 we read that the Lord forgives those who acknowledge their sin before Him. In God’s plan, He allows us to be watchmen, proclaiming warnings so that all may confess their sins and have a clear conscience. Many have guilty consciences because they have rejected the truth concerning God’s gift of life. May God’s mercy lead them to rely completely on the grace of God.
(One-Year Lectionary) A Life Thought in the Church Year for September 6 – Trinity 14: The lepers are given to be our example today (Luke 17:11-19). They set themselves apart, for they were unclean. We, too, know the sin of our covetous and lustful hearts revealed by God’s Word. Yet, despite their exile and lowly state, the lepers boldly cried out for mercy to the One who is mercy. Jesus comes for sinners. God’s mercy is for those who know their need. Whatever you have done to sin against God and your neighbor, repent, confess your sin, and be healed in body and soul. His mercy is for you. Rejoice, beloved, for those in Christ have forgiveness of all their sins.

We are anticipating over 500 youth, young adults, and adult chaperones at the 2027 Y4Life in Washington, D.C. conference. Participants will learn from leaders in the pro-life movement and voices for life from within the Lutheran church. Youth and leaders who attend will have opportunities to learn, experience for-life work, and network with other life-minded youth. High school and college youth will return to their schools and communities equipped and empowered to be Gospel-motivated voices for life.
As in years past, this conference will be held for FREE to all youth who attend. This is where YOU come in!

Lutherans For Life has, since 1979, upheld the value of life affirmed by the resurrected Christ. We educate congregations on life issues with a Gospel perspective, equipping Lutherans and their neighbors to be Gospel-motivated voices For Life.
Lutherans For Life also offers help, healing, and forgiveness for anyone who bears the burden of overwhelming guilt through our 24-hour Word of Hope hotline (888-217-8679). This free service is available to men, women, and youths for information, referrals, and Scripture-based spiritual care to address life issues such as surprise pregnancy, abortion recovery, suicide, doubting salvation, and physician-assisted suicide.
Life Teams, Life Chapters, and Life Advocates are developed in congregations and communities—in collaboration with our Volunteer Relations team—to affirm life and participate in motivating others For Life through the Gospel.
Lutherans For Life also serves youth through its Y4Life program! Specifically focused on helping high school and college youth become Gospel-motivated voices For Life, Y4Life offers a variety of educational resources, service projects, and interactive, in-person opportunities that teach youth how to uphold the lives of others.
