Farsighted for Life

by Michelle Bauman, Director of Y4Life

Sometimes, holding things close makes them harder to read.

My grandpa was an avid coin collector, and he loved to involve his grandchildren in the hunt. I remember leaning in close, shoulder to shoulder with my little brothers, to peer down at coins in the palm of my grandfather’s hand. As I grew older, I was invited to gather around his pile of pennies and help him sort them by year. What treasures we would find!

It was my grandfather who taught me the value of old wheat pennies and the satisfaction of completing a set of coins minted in the same year. And it was his enthusiasm over errors in the minting process that still has me looking closely at coins today.

My grandfather has been gone for many years now, but I’m still learning his lessons. The most recent? Sometimes, holding things close makes them harder to read. (He promised I’d understand that one someday. Let’s just say, he was right.)

I’m guessing some of you who are reading this article haven’t had the pleasure of learning this lesson yet. It’s a condition called presbyopia—a type of farsightedness that creeps up on you with age. Over time, the eye’s lens becomes less flexible, making it harder to focus on things that are near. Hence, things held close are often blurry.

I was reminded of this phenomenon as I reread parts of Jeremiah in preparation for this article, not because the words were blurry but because the future seemed to be blurry, both for Jeremiah and God’s people.

A Life Quote for Sunday, October 6: “Having received God’s gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation in His divine services to us in our congregations, we jointly put on His armor (Ephesians 6:10-18) in the public square, proclaiming Christ and Him crucified for the forgiveness of sins, even those of babies still in the womb. In so doing, we advocate for the sanctity of life from the moment of fertilization and pray that God will use us to change the hearts of the abortion-minded in our communities.” Dr. Roni Grad, Catalina Lutheran Church Life Team and National Lutherans For Life Board of Directors member

A Life Thought in the Church Year for October 6 – Pentecost XX (Proper 22B): Our Almighty Maker carefully creates every human male or female (Genesis 2:21-22). Jesus Himself took on the same flesh in fertilization and gestation to redeem our entire race (Hebrews 2:14, 17). And the Lord our God calls even the littlest among us for His own (Mark 10:14). Could the Scriptures get any clearer about the sanctity of life? Can we?

A Prayer for our Nation as we Prepare to Elect our Leaders

O God, we acknowledge you today as Lord,

Not only of individuals, but also of nations.

We thank you that we can organize ourselves politically

And declare our political loyalties

In a way that preserves our absolute loyalty to you.

We thank you for your law,

Which our Founders recognized

As higher than any human law.

We thank you for the opportunity that elections provide us,

Not only to vote, but to mobilize many others to vote,

And to vote correctly.

Lord, we know that politics is not our salvation;

We also know that part of serving you is to be politically active,

And that your people are not a sect fleeing the world

But rather a community of faith renewing the world.

Awaken Your people that the same hands lifted up to you in prayer

Are the hands that fill out the ballot;

That the same eyes that read your Word

Are the eyes that read the names of the candidates,

And that they do not cease to be Christians

When they carry out their duty to vote.

Protect the integrity of our elections,

And deliver us from deceit and fraud.

Awaken your people to the consequences of their vote,

A vote to advance freedom and to thwart tyranny,

To protect children from indoctrination in falsehood and sin,

To defend marriage and family,

To stop the killing of the unborn, the most vulnerable of all,

And to save our nation from destruction.

Lord, we rejoice today

That we are citizens of your kingdom.

May that make us all the more committed

To being faithful citizens on earth.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
