North Shore Health Department:
News from the Health Department:

Did you know? January is Radon Action Month. Radon is a naturally occurring, tasteless, odorless radioactive gas that is present in the ground. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking. Smoking combined with radon exposure poses additional lifetime risks of developing lung cancer. Radon gas forms when certain radioactive metals like uranium, thorium, or radium break down in rocks, soil and groundwater. The gas can enter your home through the foundation. One out of ten homes in Wisconsin has a high radon level. Radon levels vary from home to home, even in the same community. Having your home tested is the only effective way to determine whether you and your family are at risk of high radon exposure.

Test kits are available at the either of the North Shore Health Department offices for $6/each for North Shore residents. Call the North Shore Health Department at 414-37-2980 if you are interested in obtaining a radon test kit.
