NC MEDICAID MANAGED CARE PLANS

If you receive Medicaid:
Most people will get the same Medicaid services in a new way – through health plans. You will be able to choose the health plan that is best for you. A health plan is a group of doctors, hospitals, and other providers. They work together to give you the health care you need. Everything will come from the same health plan. This includes physical health, behavioral health, and medicine. Some health plans provide added services like programs to help you quit smoking.

Beneficiaries who did not select a health plan during open enrollment, which ended on May 21, were auto-enrolled in a plan. NCDHHS’ auto-enrollment process prioritized existing relationships between beneficiaries and their primary care provider and, where possible, a plan that has contracted with that provider was selected for the beneficiary. Confirmation notices and health plan welcome packets will be mailed to beneficiaries through June 12.

Beneficiaries have until Sept. 30, 2021, to change plans for any reason.
Who must choose a health plan?
Most people in NC Medicaid must choose a health plan in the NC Medicaid Managed Care program. Some people can choose to stay in NC Medicaid Direct. They will not need to choose a health plan. NC Medicaid Managed Care will send you a letter that tells you if you must enroll. To find out now, call NCDHHS at 1-833-870-5500 (TTY: 1-833-870-5588). The call is toll-free. Or use the chat tool to chat with us online. To learn more about NC Medicaid Managed Care, go to Get answers.

Even if you already chose a health plan, you will need to choose again. If you don’t choose a health plan, we will choose one for you. You know your needs best, so it’s better if you choose.

Plans are scheduled to go live on July 1, 2021. However, you may still change your plan up until September 30, 2021, for any reason. After that, unless there is a special reason, beneficiaries must wait until their next Medicaid recertification date to change health plans.
