Welcome to 'Life in the Lavender'

Dear Gentle Readers,

No, this is not Lady Whistledown, but I'm spending much more time in front of the television catching up on programming like Bridgerton and other favorites due to the frigid cold temps that are lingering. What about you? This author finds herself looking forward to sunny, warmer days of purple here in the tarn.

I also feel compelled to remind you that just because it's mind-numbingly cold doesn't mean that you have to deprive yourself of lavender goodies. I am happy to make personal appointments to satisfy your shopping needs. I get two or three requests a month for a private shopping opportunity so don't feel guilty about calling (517-803-3081) for an appointment.

The new "Lavender Season" could not commence without a party for all in Society. You may recall that last month I told you about a new opportunity to spend time on the farm. We are experimenting with the idea of advancing the practice of 'civic agriculture' by establishing the lavender farm as "third place" for community engagement. That means we are not all about making a profit for our business, but building a resilient community as well. We want to put people back in agriculture! To that end, we are hosting a lunch to get to know you better and to give you a chance to know us better.

Take Your Place In Lavender Society, Dear Readers

Join us to kick off the 2026 season by sharing a meal with us. You’ve been with me for a while, followed my journey and demonstrated interest in lavender and the farm’s development. Some of you have been with me since the early days on Harper Road in Mason and followed my journey to my little plot on Clark Street in Lansing. I appreciate you and the ways you have supported my dream over the past 14 years, so, come to lunch May 23rd, 2026. There's no charge – no need to buy anything just come with a willingness to meet others, network and grow our community in this lavender space. We can get better acquainted and start to build the community we deserve. I am not opening this invitation generally to all my social media followers, but for your eyes only. I want to keep this more intimate so we can interact more meaningfully. My goal is that we will add other opportunities to connect, but let’s start with lunch on me. I do need you to RSVP – you can let me know if you can make it by emailing me at sixteensprigs@gmail.comPlease expect a confirmation email. I will have to limit attendance so I can manage numbers so the first 20 will be accepted and if needed, we can add another date. Please RSVP by May 1st.

The 2026 Season is around the Corner

First, make note we are changing our hours to better serve you this year. Starting in May we will be open Wednesday – Saturday 11 am - 4 pm. When bloom season begins (approximately June 16) we will be open Tuesday – Sunday 11 am – 4 pm. Bloom season will end around July 25, and after the 25th we will return to our regular hours, Wednesday – Saturday 11 am - 4 pm. We will close the farm August 29th for the 2026 season.

Opening Day – Friday, May 1st

We’ll start the new season with our annual Kentucky Derby celebration on Friday and Saturday May 1st and 2nd. You know this Kentucky girl needs her bourbon balls on the first Saturday in May. Join us to enjoy the flutter of the fastest two minutes in sports. Games, snacks, and buy lavender products to fill your senses.

The Green Grass Under the Snow (by Annie Preston)

The work of the sun is slow,

But as sure as heaven, we know;

So we'll not forget,

When the skies are wet,

There's green grass under the snow.

When the wind of winter blow,

Wailing like voices of woe,

There are April showers,

And buds and flowers,

And green grass under the snow.

We find that it's ever so

In this life's uneven flow;

We've only to wait

In the face of fate,

For the green grass under the snow.

Today (February 11th) is 'national latte day' and the cold temps have me drinking lots of hot drinks this time of year and I think nothing is better than a great lavender latte. Try this easy version on a cold day for some creamy warmth.

Ingredients:

2 espresso shorts (2 ounces)

4 ounces (1/2 cup) fresh whole milk (double for 2 servings when steaming

1 Tablespoon lavender simple syrup (see recipe below)

Lavender buds for garnish

Make the espresso using an Espresso Machine or a French Press. Stir in the lavender syrup. Steam or froth the milk with an espresso machine or heat and then froth the milk using a milk frother. Pour the milk into the center of the espresso, ending with light foam (using half of the steamed or frothed milk for 1 drink). Garnish with lavender buds. - Recipe by Sonja Overhiser

Lavender Syrup

2 cups water

1 cup sugar

2 Tablespoons lavender buds

Juice of one lemon (opt)

Bring water to a boil, add sugar to dissolve. Take off heat and toss in lavender. Let steep 20 minutes. Once steeped, strain buds out of liquid and discard; add lemon juice. Lemon juice is optional, but it gives the syrup a nice pinkish color rather than a gray hue. Your syrup is ready to use. Syrup should be stored in the refrigerator and lasts for about 2-3 weeks. Also great in iced or hot tea or lemonade.
