Teaching the Word. Touching the Soul. Transforming the Life.

Palm Sunday Greetings,

When Jesus entered the city on what we have come to know as Palm Sunday, He heard the shouts, saw the people waving at Him, watched as they laid their cloaks and palms before Him as befitting a King, yet He realized they had no idea who He really was. While the people who were shouting Hosannah were seeking an earthly King that would correct the social and cultural ills of society, they failed to recognize that the reign of Jesus was about much more that earthly power, it was about forgiveness and reconciliation with God. And even though Jesus knew He would hear Hosannah on that Palm Sunday and crucify Him just a few days later, still he entered a place of misguided minds in order to rewrite the narrative of ages past; death itself would forever be defeated in His name.

Praise God for the love of God in Christ Jesus. Praise God for the sacrifice of intercession that would usher in an eternity beyond the grave. Praise God for a Savior that paid the debt we owed at the cross, so that the promise of eternal life would be available for every believer.

This Sunday, join along with me as we celebrate not only our risen King, but our soon to come Savior. In preparation for Sunday’s message, please study Hebrews 10: 1-17

Peace and Love,

Steadfast, Immovable, Excelling, In the LORD,

Bishop Mark W. Thompson, DMin. MDiv.

Roots & Branches: Your Weekly Black History Spotlight

Today in Black History

April 11, 1881: The Atlanta Female Baptist Seminary was founded in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, by two teachers who met and became friends at the Oread Institute of Worchester, Massachusetts: Harriet E. Giles and Sophia B. Packard.

The women secured the attention of John D. Rockefeller, along with the financial support of his wife, Laura Spelman Rockefeller, and the Spelman family. In 1884, the teachers changed the school's name to Spelman Seminary, obtaining their charter in 1888.

The school granted its first degrees in 1901, and in September 1924, Spelman Baptist Seminary officially became Spelman College.
