Teaching the Word. Touching the Soul. Transforming the Life.

Pentecost Greetings,

Prior to Christ’s ascension, Jesus shared with His disciples and all believers that they should be encouraged. He knew that after seeing and hearing Him in His resurrected form, that they would worry about their future and even the threats they would receive by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is why John records in the 16th chapter, that Jesus reassured them of several truths that would sustain and encourage them. First, Jesus promised that they—and we—would never be alone because the Holy Spirit would be with them. Then Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would give them authority. This authority was not of human nature, but an authority steeped in Divine power. Jesus told them that the Divine authority would guide, teach, and reveal truths that they would need to live by. Don’t miss what was just stated, for that same authority rests in everyone who believes in the living promises of God.

The Disciples—as should we—were encouraged by Christ’s promises, but there was more to come. Jesus then shared one word that not only speaks to the presence and the authority of the Holy Spirit, but one word purposed to embolden every believer. That word is “Advantage.” As we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, I will be teaching on what each of us has been gifted with through the Holy Spirit; Advantage.

As we celebrate the indwelling of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, the tradition is to wear some form of red attire. The color red not only represents the blood that saves and cleanses, but it further represents the fire of God’s presence radiating within. So please, consider joining me and fellow believers in wearing some representation of red as a statement for those who are on fire for Jesus.

Peace & Blessings,

Bishop Dr. Mark W. Thompson, Senior Pastor

Thelma “Butterfly” McQueen

Butterfly McQueen was born Thelma MacQueen in Tampa, Florida, in January 1911. Her father Wallace was a dockworker and her mother Mary worked as a maid. After they separated, Thelma lived with her mother in Augusta, Georgia, where she was educated by nuns at a convent. When she was a teenager they moved to New York; her mother worked as a cook in Harlem and Thelma attended high school on Long Island.

Butterfly McQueen boasts a phenomenal career spanning Broadway, movies, and dance, yet is best known for her role as Scarlett O’Hara’s maid Prissy in Gone with the Wind (1936). While many described her as a scene-stealer, McQueen hated the role. “I thought the movie was going to show the progress black people had made,” she said in an interview, “but Prissy was lazy and stupid and backward.” Incidentally, she and her black costars weren’t able to attend the film’s premier, which was held in a whites-only theater in Atlanta, Georgia.

Butterfly McQueen stood for her principles and for the dignity of the black race. Her legacy teaches us that you don’t have to deny yourself for anyone!
