Teaching the Word. Touching the Soul. Transforming the Life.

Blessings,

I ran across a very interesting quote by J. I. Packer regarding the Word of God. He wrote: "God the Father is the giver of Holy Scripture; God the Son is the theme of Holy Scripture; and God the Spirit is the author, authenticator, and interpreter of Holy Scripture.” In every way Packer was sharing what the Apostle John declared, by saying “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Both the Apostle and Packer shared that in the Word of God lies humanities strength, direction, hope, and truth. It’s not just the written Word of God wherein hope lies, but it is in the revelatory Word of God when God speaks to our individual needs. It is of profound joy to realize that anytime or in any place, God will say a Word to us purposed for our joy, but also, a Word that feeds a need in our soul.

This Sunday I begin a new series of messages centered on the living Word of God. In preparation, please Study Ephesians 6:10-17. As this is Communion SONDAY, for those who will worship with us virtually, please have your communion elements prepared so that we can honor the Lord’s sacrifice in Jesus Christ in unity.

Peace,

Steadfast, Immovable, Excelling in the LORD

Bishop Mark W. Thompson, Sr. Pastor

Dr. John Morton-Finney

Some lives do more than make history—they remind us of what is possible when perseverance is stronger than circumstance. Dr. John Morton-Finney lived such a life. Born in 1889, the son of a man who had been born into slavery, he entered a world where segregation and racial discrimination attempted to define where African Americans could learn, work, live, and succeed. Yet Morton-Finney refused to allow the limitations of his time to become the limitations of his life.

He served his country as a Buffalo Soldier, devoted nearly five decades to educating young people, became an accomplished attorney, mastered multiple languages, earned 11 academic degrees, and continued practicing law beyond the age of 100. His story is not simply one of extraordinary achievement; it is a testament to faith in possibility, the transformative power of education, and the determination to keep growing regardless of age or adversity. John Morton-Finney's life challenges each of us to ask not what circumstances have placed in our way, but what we will choose to do in spite of them.
