27th - Women's Ministry

From The Pastor's Desk:

To be Christian is to believe in the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. So, it stands to reason that Easter is our High Holy Day! We have so many traditions that we hold dear, and which make Easter so meaningful. Egg decorating and hunting, and baskets filled with treats. Many travel to be with family, and special meals are prepared and enjoyed.

In my childhood, included with all this was the practice of dressing in our finest clothes. My sisters wore new pastel colored dresses with white shoes and flowery headpieces. We walked the four blocks to First Lutheran Church on Fullerton Avenue in Chicago that was packed full of Easter worshippers. After church we headed out to gather with extended family for the feast - a big dinner and desserts!

Easter was a bit of a mystery for me then. Didn’t Jesus just die on a cross a few days before? The building was much less packed, and quite dark. It was a gloomy experience. Why was that a “Good” Friday? And now Jesus was alive again? How? Why? And, the really big question, what does all that have to do with me?

Life and faith have taught me that Easter is a lot more than nice clothes, eggs and big dinners. The resurrection of Jesus is God keeping the promise to be with us always. Nothing can overcome it. Not life or death, not success or failure, not sin or neglect, not tragedy nor loss. God is for us and with us no matter what! Easter is hope! Easter is God’s life - for us!

That is something to celebrate, and so we do! Easter is so special we believe every Sunday is an Easter celebration. That’s right! Every Sunday we celebrate the Good News of the resurrected Jesus, who died and rose again for us – that we might be free to live abundant lives.

So, come and worship on Easter morning! Be joyful and be renewed. Then come again the next Sunday, and the next, and join the Easter celebration! It’s good to be with the family!

Blessings,

Pastor Barry

There are babies who need our help!

2025 LENTEN PROJECT

DIAPERS FOR SOLACE!

Ending April 27th

Lent has traditionally been a time when we look at how we can sacrifice for the good of others. The Solace Nutrition Hospital of Hope Alive! Ministries in Haiti needs our help!

This residential ministry provides 24-hour around-the-clock care for babies who are severely malnourished. The babies receive medical care, physical therapy and 4 to 5 nutritious meals daily, hence the need for lots of diapers! Solace babies are literally hugged, loved, and prayed back to good health! When the babies have maintained good health and have reached their goal weight, they RETURN HOME to their FAMILIES. Penny Miller has been a long-time supporter of these ministries as has our congregation.

What can I give up or share to help these little ones during our Lenten journey? Take the Solace Challenge-pray for and donate $1/day for each of the 42 days of Lent! Or, make a bid on the latest Quilt Auction (See the article below.). Whatever you can do, any amount will surely be well used! Look for the drop box in the Narthex, use any of our donation platforms or mail your donation to the church office, including the designation: "Diapers for Solace."

Lenten Quilt Silent Auction

To Benefit Solace

Bidding Ends:

Sunday, April 13th At 11:00 AM

One of Lord of Life's partners in ministry is the Hope Alive! Ministries in Haiti. Hope Alive! sponsors the Penny Miller Sewing Acadamy and other activities including the Solace facility which cares for malnourished infants as well as orphaned or abandoned babies.

All funds raised in this quilt auction will be donated to Solace to purchase baby diapers which are in great need.

The quilt was fashioned by Gloria Brosious. It measures 84" x 84 " and will cover the top of a queen bed.

Look for a box in the Narthex into which you can place the bidding paper with your name and bid. The minimum bid is $200. The winner will be announced on Sunday, April 13th after bidding closes at 11:00 AM.

Music Ministry "Notes"

From Director Rick Krause

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Holy Humor Weekend
April 26th & 27th
The church services this weekend will celebrate a long standing tradition of having the Sunday after Easter being Holy Humor Sunday.
The custom began in the early Greek Christian church. It has gone under the names: Bright Sunday, God’s Laughter Sunday, Holy Fools Sunday, Holy Humor Sunday, Hilarity Sunday, and Laughter Sunday. Churches in 15th century Bavaria used to celebrate the Sunday after Easter as Risus Paschalis: “God’s Joke,” or “the Easter laugh.”  Priests would deliberately include amusing stories and jokes in their sermons in an attempt to make the faithful laugh.  After the service, people would gather together to play practical jokes on one another and tell funny stories.  It was their way of celebrating the resurrection of Christ – the supreme joke God played on Satan by raising Jesus from the dead.
The observance of Risus Paschalis was officially outlawed by Pope Clement X in the 17th century.  Perhaps people were having too much fun. In the Orthodox tradition, people would gather on Easter Monday to tell jokes and funny stories, and to dance and eat together.
In 1988, the Fellowship of Merry Christians began encouraging churches to resurrect some of these Christian traditions—to celebrate the grace and mercy of God through the gift of laughter and joy. Lord of Life will do this on Saturday, April 26th and Sunday, April 27th during our church services.
Hymn Suggestions
What is your favorite church hymn or song? Have you heard it recently? Now is the time to suggest it! Please contact me, Rick Krause, (3rick@lordlife.us), and let me know. I will try to incorporate it into our worship services in the near future.
Sing With Us!
Lent is a 40-day journey and a time to dedicate ourselves to spiritual growth. One way to do that is to join the choir. Extra voices are especially welcome during the time from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday. The choir focuses on learning the liturgy music, hymns/songs, and anthems that reflect the spirit of the season. There is also time devoted to nourishing our faith. Please consider singing with the choir for the Lenten season--no experience required. See Rick Krause for details. (3rick@lordlife.us or 856-287-5328)
"Stay NJ"
Senior Citizen
Tax Relief Program
There is a new New Jersey tax relief program in effect for senior citizen home owners.
The Stay NJ program offers property tax benefits to eligible homeowners aged 65 and older. It reimburses applicants for 50% of their property tax bills, up to a maximum of $13,000, with a 2024 benefit cap of $6,500. To qualify, you must have owned and lived in your home for the full 12 months of 2024 and have an income below $500,000. Mobile homeowners are not eligible
Stay NJ benefits are calculated after ANCHOR and Senior Freeze benefits are determined. Payments are expected to be issued in early 2026. Eligibility requirements, including income limits, and benefits available for all Property Tax Relief programs are subject to change by the State Budget.
Save Money
This Tax Season
Now New Jersey residents will be able to file their taxes absolutely free, thanks to IRS Direct File. This program allows residents to file their taxes directly with the government online, so there are never any filing fees. Residents could save hundreds of dollars each tax season. Learn more at DirectFile.NJ.gov.
Taxpayers who are 70 1/2 or older can transfer up to $100,000 from a
traditional IRA tax-free to charity each year. The "qualified charitable
distribution" will count as your required minimum distribution without being added to your adjusted gross income! Two of our Lord of Life church members are already taking advantage of this. Read all about it in the links
below, and consult your tax advisor.
Organ Dedication
Sunday, March 2nd
Our newly acquired Allen organ was dedicated during the Sunday church service. Rick Krause played some wonderful music and the choir sang. After the church service, there were some music themed treats served at Coffee Hour. Thanks to all who made it possible for us to bring this special musical instrument to Lord of Life!
Lenten Banners
Adorn Sanctuary
Wednesday, March 5th
Newly made Lenten banners were hung in the Sanctuary prior to Ash Wednesday services. Each shows a word that relates to a theme stressed during the Season of Lent. Members of our Time For Talents crafted them. Thank you to all who participated!
Women's Ministry Dinner
Tuesday, March 11th
The women of Lord of Life gathered at Tarantella's for a delicious meal and warm fellowship. Shown are Linda Baechler, Lu Hourihan, Fran Jones, Sara King, Penny Miller, Sandy O'Neal, Sheri Perkins, and Julie Scott getting ready for their food to be served.
Lunch Bunch
Wednesday, March 12th
It was "South Of The Border" for a wonderful lunch at Taqueria El Mexicano in Medford. Shown are Lu Hourihan, Nancy Di Yenno, Sandy O'Neal, Sheri Perkins, Janell Reich, Bill Reich, and Ed Hourihan.
St. Patrick's Day Coffee Hour
Sunday, March 16th
Fellowship Hall was decked out in green as our PEP group hosted a special coffee hour. There were Irish treats to taste, ukuleles playing Irish music, and songs. Thank you to PEP members who provided the food for this event.
A special note from Janell Reich: Thanks to everyone who participated in our St. Patrick's Day Celebration. What a wonderful time of fellowship, food, laughter and music. There were a lot of smiles! A special thanks to all who put it
together, everyone who helped decorate, cook, set up, and clean up. And thanks to our ukulele players who did a great job leading us in song and for Ed Hourihan leading "Harrigan."
Devotion And Walk"
Tuesday, March 18th
There was wildlife galore during our visit to the Rancocus Nature Center. Photos show a pileated woodpecker and a soaring bald eagle. Judy and Keith Lerner are pictured with "Woody" the troll. The other photos show a Boy Scout pollinator garden project and a view of the creek.
From The Editor:
Dear friends at Lord of Life!
Thank you for broadcasting the service for Barbara Wagner. While at LOL, Jan and I enjoyed working with Barbara on many projects of the church. My prayers are with you as you continue
to minister to the people of Tabernacle and Medford. To God be the glory!!!
Your “old” friend!
1,700th Anniversary
Of The Nicene Council
In 325 AD, leaders of the early Christian Church met in the city of Nicaea and discussed the theology of Christianity. At this Council, the Nicene Creed was written and basic church doctrine was established. To learn more, you can read a detailed Living Lutheran newletter article about the Council by clicking on the link below.
April Fool's Day
No, this note is not an April Fool's Day prank! Here's an article that summarizes one historian's view on how this tradition began. The Editor has met the story teller, Professor Angus Gillespie, and he is quite knowledgeable, accomplished, and interesting. The link will take you to the article.
