From The Pastor's Desk:
OPPORTUNITIES
Dear friends, since the beginning of this year, as I became Interim Pastor at Lord of Life, I have been so thankful for the many ways we serve God, and the deep faith and commitment of our members and staff. Giving generously of their time, creativity, efforts, abilities and resources - financial and otherwise - makes it possible for us to be the presence of Jesus Christ for each other and our community.
It is very clear in the Bible that Jesus says to feed the hungry, comfort the grieving, and care for the widow and orphan. Some of us have a passion for passing on faith to children. Others have a passion for raising up leaders for the church. Still others want to see non-Christians experience the good news for the first time.
As we think about where we want to get involved, we cannot do it all. However, as we financially support our congregation this year we are involved in all of this. Not all of us are called to be teachers, but our offerings support teaching and passing on faith to kids. Not all of us have the gifts to comfort the grieving, but our financial gifts provide for great pastoral care. Not all of us have the time to go out and feed the hungry, but we can all give significantly according to our means so that the hungry can be fed.
Our congregation directly engages in many of these ministries on our own. Others, we are able to accomplish through our Synod and Churchwide partners as they carry on the work for God’s kingdom on our behalf. As we continue to grow ministries, we have more and more opportunities to engage in different ministries right here and across the region, the nation, and the globe.
When we financially support ministry here, our gifts make possible the many ways we engage in ministry. Even if you are not personally serving in a particular ministry, your gifts make that ministry possible. As we give generously, we have the opportunity and the privilege to feed the hungry, care for the grieving, pass on faith to children, raise up leaders, and so much more.
We have much to be thankful for and much to celebrate as a congregation! In November we will hear from faithful members in worship as they share their thankfulness and passion for ministry. You will receive invitations to attend a Celebration Meal after worship on Consecration Sunday November 24th, as we celebrate God’s goodness among us. On that same day, we are invited and encouraged to share our Estimate of Sharing cards (EOS). These are more than just a vehicle toward producing a budget for the church. I view our commitments as participation in God’s holy work among us. All that we are and have are gracious gifts of abundance from our Creator. Our giving is a joyful act of thankfulness for God’s presence in our lives, and at Lord of Life!
Julie and I will be there with our commitment in hand, ready to consecrate our gifts to God’s work. I look forward to sharing that day with you!
Pastor Barry

All Saints Weekend
Saturday And Sunday, November 2nd And 3rd
Church services this weekend will remember church members, friends, and loved ones who entered eternal rest this year. During the service, we will celebrate their life and witness, and you will be able to personally remember them by lighting a candle in the altar area of the Sanctuary. We will also recognize those who were Baptized, received their First Communion, and our newest Confirmands.
Lutherans designate the first weekend in November as All Saints Weekend. All Saints Day is November 1st. As a special day to remember those who died in the faith, it can be traced back to the 4th Century AD when it was celebrated on May 13th. The November 1st date was established by Pope Gregory III during his reign from 731 AD to 741 AD.

Pray For Our Nation
Monday, November 4th,
At 9:00 AM
With Election Day the following day, join Pastor Barry in a brief gathering at the church on Monday, November 4th at 9:00 AM to offer prayers for our soon to be elected officials to lead us in a positive pathway. Challenges exist at the local, state, and national levels and our prayers will certainly be a powerful way to support our leaders.

Service Of Word
And Prayer
Saturday, November 9th
5:00 PM Church Service
As most of you know, Pastor Barry does not preside at every Saturday evening church service. Usually Breanne Tomlinson officiates at those services when Pastor does not. Rick Krause has provided the following information about these services.
At least once a month, Lord of Life celebrates a Service of Word and Prayer at the Saturday 5:00 PM service. This worship format focuses on scripture readings, a sermon (message), and prayers. In the Lutheran tradition, this service has typically been used when an ordained minister is unable to preside over Holy Communion. The pattern of worship is based on a full communion service, but a Thanksgiving for the Word of God replaces the Lord's Supper. Our next Service of Word and Prayer will be on Saturday, November 9th, at 5:00 PM.
| |
|
Sunday, November 24th,
At 4:00 PM
St. Peter's Episcopal Church
1 Hartford Road, Medford
Several congregations from our local area will join together in giving thanks for our many blessings at this ecumenical church service. The Lord of Life Choir will sing during the service. All are welcome!

Lord of Life

Tuesday, November 26th,

The annual Thanksgiving Service at Lord of Life will be held on November 26th. All are welcome to come to worship, praise, and thank our gracious Lord!

November Is
Stewardship Month
At Lord Of Life
During the month of November, we will remind congregation members how their generosity has been a blessing to our ministry and outreach programs at Lord of Life. Without YOU, none of this is possible.
As part of the process for preparing to search for a new pastor, your
church council spent time in 2024 determining what we, Lord of Life, does
best. The outcome of this exercise resulted in the Council discovering
four CORE VALUES of Lord of Life. During November, one weekend of the
month will be devoted to each of these core values. Come and hear about
what the church council believes is special about Lord of Life. Will you
agree? Come and see!
Here are the dates, Core Value topics, and those who will be addressing the congregation:
November 2nd and 3rd: Sue Dreisbach - Care And Nurture Of The Congregation
November 9th and 10th: Lee Jennings - Compassion For Those In Need
November 16th and 17th: Tom Tait - Making Disciples For Christ
Consecration Sunday, November 24th: Lu Hourihan - Joyful Worship
New For This Year!
By now, all church member households should have received the first mailing with information about our 2024 Stewardship Campaign.
In the first mailing, there is an invitation to attend Consecration Sunday on November 24th and then remain for fellowship at a Celebration Meal brunch following the church service. A pink form to make your reservation for the meal is enclosed in the mailing. Please return the pink form to the church as soon as possible so we can properly plan for the event. If returning the form in person, it should be placed into the "Heart Box" in the Narthex or into the offering plate. You can also mail it to the church.
In the second mailing, which should arrive at your home in the next couple of days, an Estimate Of Sharing card (EOS card) is provided for you to let the church know your expected generosity for 2025. We will present our completed EOS cards at the altar on Consecration Sunday, November 24th, during the service. You can place your completed EOS card into the "Heart Box" in the Narthex or into the offering plate at any time or mail it back to the church.
We encourage and hope that you will join us for the special service on Sunday, November 24th, Consecration Sunday, and remain for our Celebration Meal brunch following the service. Our goal is to have every church member attend both the service and brunch!
What If I Am Unable To Attend Church On Consecration Sunday?
It is understandable that there will be some church members who cannot be with us on Consecration Sunday. If that is the case, we would ask that you return your pink registration form as soon as possible. Also return your completed EOS card to the church prior to November 24th so that it can be presented at the altar along with all the others. Thank you in advance for doing this!

Lord Of Life Focus On Health Corner:
November Is Diabetes
Awareness Month
American Diabetes Awareness Month is observed in November and Lord of Life is making sure you can have much useful information about this disease. It's a time to raise awareness about diabetes, both the physical and mental aspects. As per the Center for Disease Control (the CDC), “About 38 million people have diabetes, and 1 in 5 don't know they have it. People who have diabetes are at higher risk of serious health complications; however, Type 2 diabetes can be prevented and diabetes can be managed.”
The American Diabetes Association has great resources on their website: https://diabetes.org/about-diabetes
During the month of November, there will be diabetes information in Fellowship Hall on our Focus On Health Corner table. Be sure to visit it! Thanks to church member Heather Cosper for helping us with this month’s Health Focus!

Pastor Search Update:
Call Committee Formed
A Message From Church Council President, Bill Reich
On October 15, 2024, your church council took a significant step in the process of finding a new full time pastor for Lord of Life. Your council worked for several months to create the Ministry Site Profile (MSP). This document describes Lord of Life. Just as we will want to see a
resume for our future pastor, the pastorial candidates want to see a “resume” for Lord of Life. The MSP is that resume. (For those of you wishing to inspect the MSP, it is viewable at this link:
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ni0oizs4j4706qa21c6ch/minsitry-site-profile-10-15 2024.pdf?rlkey=l972si7qbf2nmodvphein34xl&st=w51m6mbj&dl=0)
Once our submitted MSP has been approved by the ELCA and the NJ Synod, LOL's pastorial vacancy and MSP will be posted on the ELCA website for potential candidates to see.
Also in October, the 2024 Call Committee for Lord of Life was established. The call committee screens, interviews, and recommends pastorial candidates to the congregation council. Members of the 2024 Call Committee are: Sue Dreisbach, Kristy Godfrey, Judy Lerner, Ed Hourihan, Alan Dennison, and Paul Molnar. Ed Harding will be the chairman of the committee.
Pastor Barry has agreed to extend his pastorial stay with us into 2025 as we work through the process of finding a new pastor.

|
Air Conditioning Campaign:
End Of October Update
The total amount of contributions to our Air Conditioning System Campaign through the end of October is $26,212.
We are most grateful for all the contributions, and we thank everyone who has donated! Please click on the link below to view a video "Thank You!"
To View The Video - Click Here
Our ultimate goal is to receive a total of $50,000 by July 31, 2025. Any money received beyond our goal will be used to replace other air conditioning units that the church owns.
Your donations of any size to this air conditioning campaign, which are above and beyond what you pledged to the church in 2024, will be literally felt by everyone that enters our building.
Your donations, labeled "Air Conditioning Fund", may be placed into the offering plates. The electronic giving service Tithe.ly (https://tithe.ly/give_new/www/#/tithely/give-one-time/956196) has been recently updated for this new fund. Of course, you may mail your
donations to the church, too.
Thank you for considering this emergent need. Your contributions, whether it be once, weekly, or monthly, to this campaign will help every member of our church to worship the God that loves us.

A "Note" From Rick Krause:
Cartoon Christmas Trio Coming To Lord Of Life
Saturday, December 7th,
At 5:00 PM
Dear Lord of Life Families,
The Christmas season will soon be here. With that in mind, Lord of Life will be hosting the Cartoon Christmas Trio for a free concert at the church on Saturday, December 7th at 5:00 PM.
The Cartoon Christmas Trio will perform every song from the “A Charlie Brown Christmas” recording, using the exact instrumentation that Guaraldi originally composed. In addition to the Peanuts music, the trio will play songs from "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas", "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer", "Frosty the Snowman", and "The Little Drummer Boy", just to name a few.
We are looking to form a children's choir to sing 3 Christmas songs with the trio at the concert. They are:
Christmas Time is Here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PzetPqepXA
Hark the Herald Angels Sing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KCb3IG60pU
My Little Drum - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO2kSduwY34
Practices (10 to 15 minutes long) have begun on Sunday morning after the church service, but other days and times can be scheduled to accommodate everyone who wants to participate.
Would you be interested in singing the three songs at the concert? Please let me know ASAP. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. You can see me at church, send me an e-mail, or text/call me at your convenience.
If you would like to find out more about the Cartoon Christmas Trio, please visit their website at https://cartoonchristmastrio.com/home.
Thank you in advance for your consideration, and I hope to hear back from you in the very near future.
Blessings!

You're Invited!
How You Can Help!
As a congregation member, did you know that you are the best force for bringing new members into our church community? We have come up with an invitation program in which you can be a part.
We have "Invitation Cards" available (See the photo above which includes two cards and our knitted "octopus," and the two photos below of the text on the cards.) that you are encouraged to pick up and give to friends and neighbors with children who do not have a church home or are seeking a different one. All you need to do is to hand the invitation to them and tell them about our church and youth programs. This kind of outreach by you will certainly make a difference to bring them into our church family.
(Breanne has the invitations. See her to pick up as many as you like.)

Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the
Two Halves of Life
By Richard Rohr
Book Club for November will discuss this book by writer Richard Rohr. The author seeks to help readers understand the tasks of the two halves of life and to show them that those who have fallen, failed, or "gone down" are the only ones who understand "up."
Here is a summary of this thoughtful book recommended by Cynthia Tait. Most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the whole thesis of this book is exactly the opposite. What looks like falling down can largely be experienced as “falling upward.” In fact, it is not a loss but somehow actually a gain, as we have all seen with those who have come to their fullness.

Book Club December Preview
Here are the upcoming books!
| |
|
December 10th:
In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash
And
Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories and Other Disasters
Both By Jean Shepherd
We will read either of the books written by Jean Shepherd that inspired A Christmas Story. In the first book, Shepherd talks about his wildly witty reunion with his Indiana hometown and disproves the adage, "You can never go back." This is a wonderfully nostalgic memoir of a more innocent era when life was good, fun was clean, and station wagons roamed the earth. In the second book, Shepherd’s memoir is a universal (and achingly funny) remembrance of the rites of growing up, including the gut-wrenching playground antics of one Delbert Bumpus.

Come join us for some real Southern hospitality!
We share good food and enjoy spending a relaxed, supportive time together. All are welcome: women, men, family, and friends!

Seeking Potential
Church Council
Members
As we begin the Fall season, it is time to start thinking about electing a new set of church council members. The election will take place at our 2025 Annual Meeting which is normally held in January. Council members need to take their calling to serve seriously. They have a duty to:
- leave personal agendas behind, make decisions in the best interest of the church based upon core values

New Church Organ Delivered
Friday, October 11th
Lord of Life had the opportunity to receive the organ from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Collingswood, which has closed. The only cost to our church was for moving it here and for installation. The organ is a far superior one compared to ours and will provide a higher quality sound with its three manuals (rows) of keys compared our existing one with two rows and many more instrument variations available. Our old organ will be stored in Fellowship Hall until a proper new home can be found for it. The organ still must be connected to the sound system and the speakers need to be positioned and connected. It will take some time before this happens. Thanks to Rick Krause for making this possible and to several church members for contributing funds to help pay for the moving costs.

Fall Clean Up Day
Saturday, October 19th
It was a beautiful day for our annual Fall Clean Up! We had 18 of our members present to work on the outside and inside of the church. The tasks completed were clearing the parking lot of leaves and debris, weeding the flower beds, trimming the bushes and shrubs, removing leaves from around our air
conditioning equipment, and cleaning windows and floors inside
the church.
The "clean up day," however, could actually be named "clean up month" this year. Prior to October 19th, volunteers did other tasks in the month of October as well. Thanks to Peter Fucci and Keith Lerner for cleaning and power washing the walkways of the Meditation Walk and Memorial Garden. The Meditation Walk is awonderfully peaceful place to reflect on the Stations of the Cross, spend time enjoying nature, and giving thanks to God for the many blessings He has
bestowed on our congregation
There were more tasks that occured too.The basement area under the Faith Developement Center was cleared of unneeded items and things remaining were better organized. A new exit light was installed in the Sancuary. The railings leading to the entryways of the church and Fellowship Hall were repainted, and fallen tree branches were collected and set out at the curb for township Fall Brush Collection.
Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers!

New Members Welcomed!
Sunday, October 20th
Three new members were welcomed during our worship service. They are Dan Snyder and Vickie and Karl Tower. We did miss having Karl present, but he had to travel out of town and could not be with us. Dan's wife, Tara is always present with Dan, but we never got a photo of her. But the following week, we did get a picture of both Karl and Vickie as well as Tara and Dan. God's blessing be with all of you!

Reformation Sunday
Sunday, October 27th
Red was the celebratory color for this significant Sunday of the church year. Our congregation opened the service with Martin Luther's hymn, A Mighty Fortress. The choir sang God Is Our Refuge, an anthem whose words are from Psalm 46, which was also our Psalm reading for this day. It has been said that this Psalm inspired Luther when he wrote, A Mighty Fortess. Luther found in Psalm 46 the inspiration, courage, and energy to resist forces that seemed irresistible; and his resolute stand changed the church and changed the world. The Celebration Ringers Bell Choir also took part in the service accompanying many of our hymns and songs.
