Do Not Be Afraid
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27)
What are your fears?
I have a ton of them. And at times they can feel very real and can crowd my heart and mind.
The more I look for peace in the world the more I find partial peace. It doesn't reach into my deepest fears, like losing the people I love. Or get at the fear I harbor, that aches for a world where children aren't protected. Or restore trust, when I lack confidence in leaders. One of the consequences of maturing, is to have been disappointed in others and worst of all, knowing I have disappointed others.
I fe
el
I am not enough.
And that ma
y
be what I need to
remember
.
The truth is,
I am not enough
alone
. I never will be. I also want to remember I don't have to be
, for God is with me always
. In my most fear-filled and vulnerable moments, I
hold tightly onto God's Word.
Recently, we watched a video of a scene from the Gospel of Matthew when the apostles were in the boat and a storm came up. They appeared mighty fearful! Then they see Jesus through the wind and the rain and he is walking on water. Peter wants to go to him. He steps out of the boat and he too, is walking on the water. His eyes are on Jesus. Then, suddenly he thinks about what he is doing, and he begins to sink. The image stays with me of Peter's foot touching the water. It is a critical moment. Will he use his head and know he can't walk on water or will he trust his heart and have faith in what God can do? I think of how often my foot is touching the water and I, too, must make that choice.
I am so clear about what I can't do. Faith is to be a student, continually learning what God can do.

Melanie, of Y
our Choice to Live.org, gave a special presentati
on on September 18 and 19
during our Family Program classes. Parents were invited to attend with their yo
uth. Melanie shared the story of her daughter's drug overdose, information on the opioid epidemic and ideas for how we can combat it. See the Middle School website page for links to her story and the resources.
There was also time for discussion; parents and youth were encouraged to not only share any questions raised by the presentation but to promise each other they will make healthy choices in response to negative feelings.
Melanie herself noted that this was a pretty heavy topic, which left many of us feeling a need to protect our children - maybe even never let them out of our sight! The reality is we cannot do that. So, instead, we turn to our faith, asking God to help us trust, and to remind us of the joy and goodness all around us.
It is important for us to reflect that joy of our faith to our children, particularly when we hear so much of sorrow and danger in the world. For ideas on how to stay joyful, please see the
Middle School Blog.
We invited Melanie to give us this presentation because it fits with our curriculum this year - Morality and Values. The Virtues cards we handed out at Family Program 2 weeks ago can be used in many ways, including as a discussion aid on the topic of drug abuse. Please stop in the Faith Formation Office if you need a pack of Virtues cards.

Family Program
Our next programs will be part of the Parish Mission!
This week at Family Program, Al McCauley spoke on the Psalms, the songs of Scripture. Al shared clips of the musician, Bono, interviewed by a theology professor. Bono requested that interview to express how much he has been influenced by the Psalms. You can
see that interview here.
Al will be back with us on March 18 and 19th!
Al also shared a 'playlist' with us - songs he loves that remind him of the psalms. Here is his playlist. See the
Family Program Blog to see how they connect to the Psalms!
· Here Comes the Sun, by the Beatles
· What a Wonderful World, by Louis Armstrong
· Livin' on a Prayer, by Bon Jovi
· Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
· Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley
· What I Like About You by The Romantics

LaPetite Family Program
Families packed hygiene bags for St. Hyacinth in Milwaukee, during Learning Centers, as a way to give alms this Lent.
During LaPetite Centers, families learned about and discussed ways they could incorporate Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving in their daily lives this Lent. One activity was making a spinner game where they chose and wrote 3 actions for each on the wheel to take home, to be spun each day of Lent.
Our Pre-K & K Centers focused on Lent. The kids learned about the color purple, Ash Wednesday, Prayer, Fasting & Almsgiving and the number 40!
