This week we're presenting Art Complex Museum, Sarah Bouchard Gallery and Cove Street Arts.
Artists have long been fascinated with capturing light - or the lack thereof - in their work. This week's exhibitions are three examples of artists exploring light through painting and photography - from those that capture the fleeting light in the darkness of a night sky, to those who use light and lenses to better capture movement in their subjects.

Industrial Beauty - Luminous Desert at Art Complex Museum

Art Complex Museum presents Industrial Beauty - Luminous Desert, a show that highlights the photography of Jürgen Lobert and Lisa Ryan, two Massachusetts artists who share a passion for night-time photography and the beauty of light, exposure and color. The show shows the differences between "The brilliant flash and sparkle of industrial settings contrast with the quieter, softer glow of desert landscapes," according to a curatorial statement. Each artist approaches their subjects differently, with Lobert demonstrating "that industrial views ... can appear like a tourist attraction at night, because night photography is transformative" and with Ryan's desert landscapes "bathed in starlight and the glow of distant cities." Sarah Bouchard Gallery presents Genius loci, an exhibition of paintings by Maine-based artist Dozier Bell inspired by three stays on Monhegan Island 10 miles off the coast of Maine. Bell's work "embodies a reckoning with the unseen forces that shape and transform our lives," according to a curatorial statement, and her paintings straddle the line between real and imaginary places while still evoking the powerful imagery of low-light scenes. Cove Street Art presents Tim Greenway: Waterways, a show that uses photography to capture "the peaceful yet powerful journey of water flowing from the untouched snowcaps of the White Mountains ... ultimately merging with the Maine coast." Tim Greenway's photography explores the imaginative interplay of light, color, and texture" that can come from capturing moving water coursing through nature.
