Five Tips for Caregiving During the Holidays

Being a caregiver can be stressful. Roughly two out of five caregivers report their situation as highly stressful. This can be especially true during the holidays. Here are some tips to help reduce stress:

1) Keep your routine.

Organize holiday parties around your routine when possible. This will help lower stress for you and the person you are caring for.

2) Don't try to do too much.

Set limits so you and the person you are caring for don't get too tired. Save your energy for the things you enjoy most.

3) Keep gatherings small.

When at large events, see if it is possible to have a smaller, quiet space set aside for your care recipient to relax.

4) Start new traditions.

Even if you are used to hosting an event yourself, it is perfectly ok to pass that tradition on to a friend or family member.

5) Invite others to help.

If you are planning or hosting an event, ask friends and family members for help. Let them choose how they will contribute.

Family Caregiver Day in Fort Wayne

During our 45th Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony, Mayor Tom Henry proclaimed October 25th, 2022, as Family Caregiver Day in Fort Wayne.

"Whereas Aging & In-Home Services recognizes the importance of preparing caregivers - future and present - for their most important role of caring for a loved one, and has spent the last three years seeking and securing funding to equip northeast Indiana family caregivers with the necessary education and tools to care for their loved ones." - Mayor Tom Henry

Attendees were encouraged to sign a board answering the prompt "What does caregiving mean to you?" Here are some things our attendees said:

"Caregiving to me means loving, caring for, having patience and being there for your loved one and yourself. "

"Helping someone in need at their worst. To celebrate them at their best."

"Being able to advocate and use my voice to protect those in need. Being the change I want to see in the world. "
