From Loretta's Desk
“For as long as Earth lasts, planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never stop.” Genesis 8:22

Floridian winter is over, and as we “spring into a new season, we continue to celebrate all that God has made possible for His
special people.

The residents are spending more time outdoors enjoying games and activities together helped by the fact that daylight hours are slowly getting longer. This has been a very big month at Protected Harbor. Despite still being closely regulated by State mandates, everyone continues to smile buoyed by new and exciting activities.

We decorated our vans transforming them into magical chariots in order to participate in the “Night to Shine” drive -through celebration. Tim Tebow, who is the force behind this event, said it best: “… we also look forward to the future knowing that we still have so many more people to reach, children of God, made in His image, and worthy of love.”

Our staff hosted a black- tie dinner party on the lanai for residents who participated dressed in formal attire. They walked a red carpet entering the lanai area transformed into a “ballroom” illuminated by special lighting and surrounded by elegantly draped fabric. The staff then presented a 5- star dining experience served on fine china followed by a surprise after-dinner party providing everyone the opportunity to show off their tiaras, crowns, and outfits while enjoying music, dancing and even a bubble experience to culminate the evening.

For Valentine’s Day we celebrated love for each other with the “STARabilities” organization. This was a very special Valentine’s party bringing genuine smiles and long lasting, heartwarming, joyous experiences.

In closing, as we pivot towards meeting the growing needs of more and more of God’s Special People, we are grateful for your generosity that makes you the true reason for the joy “Behind the Smiles” of our residents.

I invite you to invest in our mission by aligning yourselves more closely. Our goal is to create 100 new partners willing to be monthly recurring donors in order to help us plan ahead and provide stability for our ongoing programs and activities. Our website www.godsprotectedharbor.org offers the opportunity to sign up for one-time or recurring giving online.

We need your support now more than ever. If you would be willing to let me share more about the variety of opportunities available, please reach out to me at (239) 989-1260 or at l.mottram@godsprotectedharbor.org. We would love to welcome you to our expanding team of volunteers and recurring partners.

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me.’” Matthew 25:40
Board Member Spotlight:
Meet David Hammerstrom
What makes the board of Protected Harbor so successful is the diversity and unique characteristics, talents and gifts each member brings to the table. One such person, and the most recent addition to the board, is David Hammerstrom. He hails from Connecticut where he spent 47 years working in the banking sector as a Senior Loan Officer and then Executive Vice President. In addition to which, he has also served in various positions on the boards for the Salvation Army, United Cerebral Palsy, the Chamber of Commerce, Home Builders Association, the Rotary Club, Kiwanis and Grovon Bible Chapel.
Behind the Smiles: Meet Janie
Janie is usually one of the first residents up in the morning and one of the last to go to bed at night. She begins each day with an innate sense of excitement, an emotion which reveals her curiosity about what each new day will bring.

Her morning and evening routines anchor her day. They begin with a daily breakfast of coffee, oatmeal, or eggs and bacon. Her evening rhythm of crocheting and chit-chat is a comfortable bookend to her otherwise busy days.

While school is in session, Janie volunteers at the Food Ministry at McGregor Baptist Church alongside several of her housemate friends. There she works on prep and cleanup for the lunches served every day. When she is not volunteering at the church, she can usually be found sweeping sidewalks or helping with other chores. The valuable life skills training and support Janie and the other residents receive from the staff is always geared towards guiding them to become as independent as possible.
Special Blessings
We are thankful for the healthy recovery of two residents. In recent months both were using walkers but are fully weight-bearing again today.
We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from our donors.  In response to the many calls we receive asking how you can help, we are launching our new Online Wish List.  Click the Contribution link on the right for a current list of items needed and desired for the homes.  Items are shipped directly to us making it even easier for those wishing to lend an extra hand of support.
