honoring the past, welcoming the future

This spring brings a mix of deep reflection and exciting transition for our Outdoor Illumination family.

After many years of dedicated leadership, George and Jane Hartner retired from Outdoor Illumination North Carolina. We are saddened to share that George recently passed away following a private struggle with mental health. George was not only a foundational part of our team—he was a great friend, an innovator, and one of the coolest guys we’ve had the privilege to work with. His passion for the craft and the people behind the work left a lasting impact on all of us. We are honored to share a few of our favorite photos and memories of George in this newsletter and on our social platforms.

Our owner, Mark Oxley, shared a heartfelt tribute honoring George’s incredible spirit, creativity, and the brotherhood they built over two decades of friendship. His words offer a glimpse into the remarkable person George was—someone who lived fully, loved deeply, and brought light to every life he touched.

At the same time, we’re proud to introduce the next chapter for Outdoor Illumination North Carolina. Chris Thomas has taken the helm as owner, and working alongside him is General Manager Colby Dice. Together, they bring a renewed passion for excellence, craftsmanship, and coastal living to the Carolinas.

Chris, a longtime Wilmington resident, is deeply rooted in the community he now serves. He and his wife, Leah, both attended UNCW, where they met, and today they are raising their 3-year-old daughter, Lily, along with their dog, Basil (pronounced “Baa-zil,” like in The Great Mouse Detective). For Chris, taking on this business is not just a professional endeavor, but a personal one—and he is honored to continue the tradition of excellence that Outdoor Illumination is known for.

Working with Chris is General Manager Colby Dice, who brings a strong background in landscape management, design, and customer service. Originally from a small town in south-central Pennsylvania, Colby grew up with a love of the outdoors, family, and sports. After graduating from Pennsylvania State University in 2018, he and his wife Sierra moved to North Carolina to pursue their dream of coastal living. Today, Colby and Sierra are raising their two children, Quinn and Maddox, along with their two dogs, Cedar and Ashton, in Winnabow.

Colby’s hands-on approach and passion for outdoor living is already shining through in projects like the beautifully lit Carolina Live Oak featured here. Together, Chris and Colby are continuing Outdoor Illumination NC’s tradition of creating stunning outdoor spaces with thoughtful design, expert craftsmanship, and personal care.

We look forward to supporting the continued growth of Outdoor Illumination North Carolina—and to seeing many more of their beautifully illuminated projects to come!
