Lights! Action!
Stuttgart Shines, Christmas Markets Open
New York, New York – Wed. Dec 4, 2024 – When December arrives, Stuttgart comes alive with thousands of LED lights. In the middle of city on the Schlossplatz (palace square), the fountains and five light figures, representative of important aspects in Stuttgart, elegantly illuminate the city center. Adding to the merriment is the nearby Christmas market with its 300 festive stalls offering gifts and handcrafts and delicious food and drink.
The 24-foot high light installations on the Schlossplatz represent some of the city's most important tourist landmarks: a Mercedes 300 SL and a Porsche 911, symbolic for the two automobile museums; the elephant for the Wilhelma Botanical Garden; the Ferris wheel for the Wasen where the annual beer festival is held; and the Stuttgart Rössle, known from the city's coat of arms, completes the scenery. Before the impressive backdrop of the New Palace, the lights are illuminated every day starting at 5 pm. A sound show takes place every half hour. This year, the two fountains on the Schlossplatz are integrated into the lighting concept along with Concordia, the anniversary column.
Stuttgart’s famous Christmas market with its beautifully decorated stalls is only steps away. A range of wares, including handmade wooden toys, crib figurines, arts and crafts, jewellery, sweet delights, mulled wine, cookies made from regional recipes, and Flammkuchen. A supporting program has a lot to offer with daily live concerts, a large children’s fairyland with nostalgic carousels, a real mini steam locomotive to ride on and many hands-on activities, such as the children’s bakery as well as the mini antique market, make the Stuttgart Christmas market special.
Visitors are delighted with Stuttgart as it turns into an atmospheric Christmas market town: fairy lights sparkling everywhere, the scent of cinnamon and vanilla, of bratwurst and Glühwein in the air and festive music sounding through the streets. The illuminated palace square and the atmospheric streets create a unique atmosphere that are as important for the citizens of Stuttgart as they are impressive to visitors.
Just a few hours or less by direct train or car ride from Frankfurt (1,5 hours), Paris (3,15 hours), and Zürich (4 hours), Stuttgart is the hub of a very accessible network of train and automobile routes. The Stuttgart Airport is a pleasant experience, and just a short flight from most European airports. Once you are in Stuttgart, you can use your StuttCard for free entrance to most of the museums, discounts on meals and drinks, as well as access to all of the public transportation including the buses and the regional trains that will take you into the wine hills or to the Baroque Christmas Market in Ludwigsburg and the Medieval Christmas Market in Esslingen. The StuttCard offers great benefits for visitors.
