The scene has been set for Atlanta to be labeled the "Hollywood of the South" by some or "ATLwood" by others. Although it seems the movie industry is new to Georgia, it has been a big part of the Georgia fabric for decades. In 1972, one of the great thrillers was set in the north Georgia Mountains - Deliverance. At the time, then-governor Jimmy Carter saw the impact the movie had, and in 1973 set up the Georgia Film Office; which today is referred to as the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office (FMDE). The Atlanta Film Festival, started in 1976, is one of the largest and longest running film festivals in the country with approximately 25,000 attendees. By all accounts, the Georgia film industry has been one of the best kept secrets. As the "Hollywood of the South," Georgia has become a major force in the entertainment industry. Both public and private organizations across the state have collaborated to create new incentives encouraging filmmakers to bring projects to Georgia as well as working with education officials to boost the skilled labor pool. As the need for studio space continues to grow and the State offers strong incentive packages and camera-ready locations, our team is excited about working on the next opportunity to help build and sustain the local film market. |
