Take one! Fade in.... The scene has been set for Atlanta to be labeled the "Hollywood of the South" by some or "ATLwood" by others.  Although it seems the movie industry is new to Georgia, it has been a big part of the Georgia fabric for decades.  In 1972, one of the great thrillers was set in the north Georgia Mountains - Deliverance. At the time, then-governor Jimmy Carter saw the impact the movie had, and in 1973 set up the Georgia Film Office; which today is referred to as the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office (FMDE).  The Atlanta Film Festival, started in 1976, is one of the largest and longest running film festivals in the country with approximately 25,000 attendees.  By all accounts, the Georgia film industry has been one of the best kept secrets.  As the "Hollywood of the South," Georgia has become a major force in the entertainment industry.  Both public and private organizations across the state have collaborated to create new incentives encouraging filmmakers to bring projects to Georgia as well as working with education officials to boost the skilled labor pool. As the need for studio space continues to grow and the State offers strong incentive packages and camera-ready locations, our team is excited about working on the next opportunity to help build and sustain the local film market.

Highlighted Project
Norcross, Georgia

Pieper O'Brien Herr Architects is proud to be the Architect for the newly opened Eagle Rock Studios Atlanta. The renovation project consisted of converting a vacant 465,000-SF distribution facility into one of the largest full-service movie and television production facilities under one roof in the United States.

Located in Norcross, Georgia, the facility is comprised of four 30,000-SF stages, nearly 30,000-SF of furnished office space; 40,000-SF of shop space, and another 100,000-SF of storage area.

A fully conditioned Base Camp (Breezeway) for trailers is conveniently located to each stage.  Stages are equipped with oversized "elephant" doors that can be opened with a small amount of effort to provide easy access in and out of the stages for sets and equipment.

Decoding Atlanta Movie Production Signs - What's Filming Near You!

Have you wondered about the obscure, randomly placed yellow and black signs on sidewalks and sign posts around Georgia? These signs are designed to help members of various casts and crews find their way to a movie set.  They use code names to be discreet - mostly acronyms.  However, if you know what is filming around town, some are easy to decipher.  With the help of twitter feeds such as Peachyscoop, ATLWOOD411, Filming in GA and OLV you can stay up to date on what's filming near you and where to spot the stars.
