Like the Phoenix, Asheville Rises

I wanted to share a drawing by a local storytelling artist friend.

It speaks of our ongoing journey.

(She wants to remain anonymous - you can send her waves of good energy.)

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, my dear NYC friend, Laura Simms, made a profound connection of the word ‘Ash’ with Asheville. And it ‘sparked’ a vision in me . . . maybe this has been on our community's path all along - to flourish as a beacon of creativity, then for this catastrophic devastation and destruction to blast across our land . . . and then for us/the land/the world to be inspired as we rise up from the ashes - like the mythical bird, the Phoenix.

To give you an idea of what we are seeing in every direction, it is estimated that just within the Asheville area, there are ten million cubic yards of debris. That is enough to fill 495 football fields,10’ high. Another friend from Colorado wrote to comfort me & used the phrase - a jolt of vulnerability. That continues to ring true as we rise up! 💕

Click on the video at left for images and music created by Secret Agent 23 Skidoo and Friends - a visually creative & powerful take on Hurricane Helene. In some ways, hard to watch. And when they sing the words, “me and you . . . ” - please know that phrase encompasses the world of folks both local and from afar who continue jumping in to help.

If your heart is calling you to contribute in some way – AND you need a few holiday gifts, there are many artists and area businesses who could use your love. Here are a few.

Flood Back Art

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many beloved Asheville and Buncombe County businesses, musicians and artists have been deeply affected by the storm. While the community comes together to rebuild, you can lend a helping hand from afar by shopping at these businesses' online stores or contributing to fundraising efforts.

The Christmas Truce of 1914."

I recently saw this production here in Asheville at the NC Stage Company and it moved me deeply, reflecting the story "Charlie's Truce Flag" I created and tell based on & drawn from these true events. Check to see if there is a production of it in your home area.

I am needing help!

Do you have skills in the social media realm (or know a friend or colleague who might be interested?)

I am looking for someone to work a couple of hours a week, spreading the word on Facebook and Instagram and more about my storytelling performances, workshops and coaching. We can talk about an hourly rate . . . and even better if you might be interested in a trade for story-coaching sessions or my workshop registration fees. Zip me an email if you think we might be a good match.

My "Taking Your Story to the Stage" workshop" was originally planned for this fall . . . the Hurricane had other ideas!

It is now rescheduled for March, 2025 - and I have one opening. If you'd like to join in, please be in touch to see if it is a good fit.

Please stay in touch.

May these holidays and the coming New Year bring my community - and all of you comfort, illumination - and a burst of joy!

That's my wish - now you make one!
