It's a new year and we are excited to welcome our new Royalty Candidates! Our 14 Candidates have already been hitting the ground running with multiple training sessions as well as Community Service.
The last two weeks the Candidates have learned what their personality & leadership 'color' is in their True Colors training, lead by Dawn Altmaier and learned about Lilac's partnership with Downtown Spokane thanks to Past Princess ('99) & Downtown Spokane's Director of Marketing and Programming, Elisabeth Hooker. Liz also shared her memories of when she was a Lilac Princess. The Candidates have also completed a Resume and Interview training, lead by Sheila Jewell, HR Director from Kiemle Hagood. Rounding out January, they will get an intro to and how they will interact with our local Military; a training on stage presence, the Win/Win concept and spending time Volunteering with Blessings Under the Bridge.
This is a very exciting time, not only for our 14 young leaders, but also for all our Lilac members. In a time of 'new norms,' it is comforting that this long standing tradition is continuing as it always does. Keep reading our newsletter to learn more about each of our Royal Candidates!

Our Community & Military team, lead by VP Cindy Zapotocky, has been hard at work getting out to the Community and letting everyone know that the Lilac Festival may not be looking the same these days, but we are still alive and kicking and ready to get back to our traditions!
Before the Christmas holiday, Cindy and President-Elect, Alan Hart took a trip out to Fairchild Air Force Base to meet the newly appointed Wing Commander, Col. Cassius Bentley as well as Lt. Col. Angela O'Connell of the Wing Protocol office.
Cindy and Alan presented both Col. Bentley and Lt. Col. O'Connell a 'Welcome' gift basket. It contained all things Lilac Festival as well as some Spokane goodies. Col. Bentley is very enthusiastic about the Lilac festival and can not wait till we can have the Festival downtown again. They also discussed the potential for an upcoming airshow once safe to do so as well as the close relationship the Festival has with Fairchild. They even touched on some fun history facts about Fairchild (back to 1942 where Spokane citizens bought the large land to establish an air depot) and that it is the largest employer in Spokane County (about 3,900 employees). Thank you Col. Bentley and Lt. Col. O'Connell for welcoming our Lilac team and being great hosts!
Last week, Cindy's next adventure was to City Hall to deliver more Lilac Festival goodie baskets for both our City Council members as well as Mayor Woodward. During the meeting with the Mayor, Cindy brought along our longtime Lilac Friend/Chaperone & current Lilac Legacy Artist to present the Mayor with a framed portrait of Gloria's 2020 winning artwork!
During these times, we feel it is important to remind our Community and it's leaders that the Spokane Lilac Festival is still here to support and showcase them in every possible way we can! Thank you Cindy and your team for all your hard work.
