Our 19 "We Are Spokane" Candidates are off to a great (and very busy) start! Already, they have completed a True Colors training, dinner etiquette training, social media training and met with their Lilac Liaisons. And in addition, found the time to put on their boots and grab a shovel to help build a home in Deer Park for Habitat for Humanity! Whew!
Although our Royalty team keeps our Candidates busy during these next few weeks, in the end, these young leaders will come out with more experience, knowledge and community service hours under their belt compared to some of their peers.
This is an amazing group of young women and we are incredibly impressed and blessed to have them representing the Lilac Festival and Spokane.
Over the next four weeks, we will be introducing you to each of our 19 Candidates. You will quickly see why they were chosen as their school's representative, so keep reading!
Also, don't forget to mark your calendars for
Sunday, March 3rd at 3pm for the 2019 Royalty Coronation
at West Valley High School! More details and opportunities to pre-order your tickets to come!

Brooke DeRuwe
Central Valley High School
Brooke is leading the way to save our planet! She is very passionate with furthering her involvement and education on environmental studies. Her favorite extracurricular activity is being an adviser for Green Team. An organization that helps and encourages our community to Go Green by sharing community resources, knowledge and information. After she graduates, she is off to the University of Montana to major in Environmental Studies.
Brooke is one of four children and has a 4 year old Victorian Bulldog named Timber. She loves to craft, quilt and spend her time outdoors, especially near water, while also volunteering in our community. She enjoys all the relationships, memories and opportunities she has been given in her years of volunteering.
One of her bucket list items is to swim with sea turtles and travel the world. She has already been to Belize and Italy with her family. Brooke loves country music, shopping at Kohls and enjoying iced caramel lattes. Yum!
We are honored to have Brooke as a Lilac Royalty Scholarship Candidate!

Madison O'Callaghan
Cheney High School
Madison is the oldest of three children and it is a busy household with two cats, two guinea pigs and a snake! As a family, they have traveled to Costa Rica and Hawaii but Madison hopes to travel to Italy, the Netherlands and France someday. She will fit right in with the French as she is now in her 5th year studying French! Marche à suivre!
Madison is an avid volunteer in our community. She is a weekly volunteer at Deaconess Hospital, a monthly volunteer at City Gate Fellowship and gives her time as a Guilds' School High School Advisory Board Member. She is also a very active leader at her school and is a Varsity soccer player, swimmer and track & field member. Busy lady!
In her down time, she enjoys weightlifting after school, painting, drawing and doodling with her 3D doodle pin, although we aren't sure how she finds the time! A fun fact about Madison is that she has been a vegan for over two years and enjoys Allie's Vegan Pizzeria & Cafe in Spokane. She also enjoys discovering new music and her favorite movie is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
The Lilac Festival is honored to have Madison as one of our Candidates and we look forward to getting to know her more!

Madeline Foster
East Valley High School
Madeline is one of our talented musicians. Shes been involved with Strolling Strings, Encore Orchestra and Tri-M Music. She loves seeing all her hard work pay off when the audience is enjoying her performance. She is also a member the National Honors Society. After graduation, Madeline will attend WSU to study architecture.
In her spare time she enjoys the outdoors. She loves to hike, swim, kayak and travel. When not outside, she enjoys listening to music, reading, hanging out with friends and, of course, playing music.
Madeline is one of our Disney girls! Don't ask her how many characters and movies she knows, it just can't be measured. Her favorite Disney Princesses are Cinderella and Aurora (aka Sleeping Beauty) and one of her favorite movies is Pirates of the Caribbean. She still treasurers her family trip to Disneyland.
She loves the diversity of Spokane and all the different personalities and lifestyles all over the city. She considers herself an old soul and would love to have been in the 1940's as a young woman in her 20's.
Welcome to the Lilac Festival, Madeline, we could not be more happy to get to know you and your fantastic abilities.

Hayley Caldeira
Ferris High School
Hayley is our adrenaline lover! Although she has been involved in soccer, volleyball, cheerleading and gymnastics, she has now dedicated her time to softball and loves the rush she gets from playing at top speed. On her bucket list, she would love to do any activity that gets her adrenaline going, like jumping out of an airplane!
She is the middle child with an older brother and younger sister. They too have a busy household with three cats and miss their beloved puggle (pug-beagle mix), Rusty, that passed this last fall. Her father served in the military for 15 years, which allowed Hayley to live in many places, including Alaska, Idaho and Arizona. They came to Spokane eight years ago and she loves all the unique shops, gardens, parks and friendly people in the Lilac City.
Hayley is a member of the National Honor Society and gives back by tutoring and working with young children and animals. After graduation, she hopes to attend either Community College or a four-year university to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). Her dream job is to become a zoo veterinarian in Alaska or serve our country and join the military as Veterinary Officer.
In Hayley's down time, she enjoys reading, painting, spending time with friends and family and anything outdoors like hiking and camping. She loves Country music as well as film scores and loves way too many movies to name a favorite. She loves to drink coffee, tea and Diet Dr. Pepper (a Lilac favorite) and will eat anything but mushrooms and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.
Hayley is such a joy to have as a Royalty Candidate, we are so honored that she is part of the Lilac Family.
