January 23, 2024
Dear Competitor,
This year’s Historic Festival 42 will feature Ford as our Honored Marque; the 60th anniversary of the Mustang and Ford Motorsports in general.
Our Special Collector is Ross Myers, a regular competitor in Historic Trans AM, a long time competitor at Lime Rock; and owner of Three Dog Garage, a wonderful museum in Boyertown, PA https://www.3dog.org/about-us, with a great variety of Ford powered cars.
For the racing competitor we have two primary objectives:
- Reduce the speed differential in all groups.
- Create ONE new group that makes our event more accessible to new drivers by allowing less expensive and more readily available race cars to participate; cars that are also more familiar to younger drivers.
We have an opportunity to pursue both these objectives because two of last year’s groups, the all MG Group and Sports 2000’s, will not return in 2024. One of these spaces will accommodate the New Group, preliminary working title: “Early World Challenge” or “Turn of the Century World Challenge”. Group description later in this memo.
Reducing the speed disparity should result from our running our “regular entry” in eight groups, not last year’s seven.
We are also going to take a “new look” at our regular Groups and Classes. For example, we have gotten “too permissive” with “Tin Tops”. We’ll find other places for 6-cylinder cars (the BMW’s) and cars that are too modern (the VW Golf’s). We might add a new class, under 1300 cc’s, to Tin Tops.
There will not be a Miata Group. Early 1600 cc Miata’s may run with Sports Cars under 2 litres.
Groups and Classes
The following 10 Groups and classes will be combined/changed when we can evaluate the entry, ending up with 9 Groups.
Mid Century Sports Cars
Prewar/early Postwar
Tin Tops, IMSA RS/under 2.5 litre cars, a 1300 cc class
Air cooled Porsches/IMSA GTU Porsches
Formula Junior
Big Bore
Early World Challenge or Turn of the Century World Challenge
GT/Sports Cars under 2 litres
Fast Production/Sports Racing Car
Wings, Slicks/Formula Fords
New Group
The concept of this new race group, World Challenge, is to showcase production-based street stock race cars from the 1995-2005 era, prepared for SCCA World Challenge, as well as Motorola Cup and a variety of similar national and international categories (SCCA ITA and Super Touring, BTCC, JGTC to name a few). Previous Escort Endurance, Playboy Series, IMSA Firehawk, and other showroom stock-based series will be considered on an individual basis. Acceptable GT Sports and Touring Cars must have been built or modified so as to compete in a recognized race series and be prepared to original specifications according to their respective racing series.
Tires
Last year we re-evaluated our tire rules and came up with more concise language in our Technical Regulations (available from the Driver Information page of Historic Festival. Included was a treaded tire definition consistent with other Vintage Motorsport Council race events and a list of limited exceptions based on specific race Classes (as opposed to overall Race Group). While the results may not have been perfect, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive and we will continue to improve the process with updated Historic Festival 42 Technical Regulations as race groups and classes are confirmed.
