Mark your calendars for the August 21 return of Twilight Picnic for the Parks: Back in the Swing. Pittsburgher-turned-New-Yorker, Benny Benack III returns to his roots to celebrate this night of jazz, cocktails and a grazing picnic dinner. We missed you last year during our COVID pause but we're back at Hartwood Acres Park to celebrate the Allegheny County Parks. Guests will gather in an open, tented park setting and sway to live jazz under the stars with Pittsburgh musicians backing up Benack, a high-energy, singer-musician.
A new twist on our gala calls for a new site. Twilight Picnic for the Parks: Back in the Swing will be staged at the Hartwood Acres Meadow off Middle Road. This project of the Parks Foundation will delight guests with native species blooms while construction of the Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres is underway on the Mansion Lawn.
Twilight Picnic for the Parks is the signature fundraising event of the Allegheny County Parks Foundation. Since its inception in 2017, Twilight Picnic has raised over $1.275 million to improve, conserve and restore the nine County Parks, thanks to the support of our corporate community and generous individuals.
Would you like to sponsor this event? Email Barbara Brewton or call her at 724.327.7627. Stay tuned for ticket information!

Spring project site visits

With the conserved sculpture Hence by Clement Meadmore peeking from behind, representatives from several agencies gathered recently to view the progress of the Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres. As warmer weather returned to the region, workers have been able to place sculptures on new concrete foundations, which will allow visitors to better appreciate their grandeur and significance once the site is completed later this year.
The Sculpture Garden will feature ADA-accessible walkways connecting the artworks, which will be surrounded by new native landscape plantings. Driveways and parking areas will also be reconfigured, designed using "green" principles.
The Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres is made possible in part by the RADical ImPAct Grant program, which was launched in celebration of the Allegheny Regional Asset District’s 25th anniversary with the intention of funding bold, forward-looking, creative projects that will have a radical impact on the region.

Suffragist Grove Conceptual Design
|
|
The Board of Directors of the Allegheny County Parks Foundation recently approved this conceptual design for the Suffragist Grove at Hartwood Acres Park. This unique design was a collaboration of landscape architects at the Parks Foundation and Allegheny County Parks Department.
The grove was founded on August 18, 2020, the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. This feature is part of the Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres. Hartwood Acres Park was selected as the site for the grove because Mary Flinn Lawrence, who owned the mansion with her husband before it was acquired by Allegheny County, had a long history of advocating for women’s voting rights.
The inspiration to plant this stand of trees rose from the early days of the movement. Activists who had been jailed were encouraged to plant trees upon their release as part of their healing process. This grove was inaugurated with one ceremonial Tulip Poplar tree. The will be planted in partnership with Allegheny County as funds are raised to support the project.
