Six Week Office Study

In a Six Week Office Study conducted as research into the development of the Fresh Focus™ program, Limoneira Sustainably produced lemons were sent to 19 offices in Central and Southern California. Office sizes ranged from 3 to 200 employees with the majority having between 20-75 employees. At the conclusion of the study, employees completed surveys about their experiences. Three Hundred and Fifty-Nine Surveys (359) were completed. A top-line of the results is shown here

Limoneira is donating lemons for Doctors and Nurses in 5 NYC area hospitals fighting the COVID-19 virus. One of their Doctors, Dr. Andrew Weber is using large doses of Vitamin C to treat the virus.

 

As you've heard and read, hospital staffs are dealing with this virus without adequate protection, and they are working exhausting schedules. Providing them with lemons will provide a little Vitamin C help, and the NY Drs. are grateful.

 

Limoneira is also donating lemons to The Ventura County Medical Center, Community Memorial, Food Share, SPIRIT, and Ventura's Area Agency on Aging (VCAAA). VCAAA is currently hosting a food pantry for people 60 and older and individuals with disabilities. We have also donated Tyvek white disposable coveralls used by our field workers to Community Memorial Hospital Drs. and Nurses. 

 

Dr. Andrew G. Weber, a pulmonologist and critical-care specialist affiliated with two Northwell Health facilities on Long Island, said his intensive-care patients with the coronavirus immediately receive 1,500 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C.

 

Identical amounts of the powerful antioxidant are then readministered three or four times a day, he said. Each dose is more than 16 times the National Institutes of Health's daily recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C, which is just 90 milligrams for adult men and 75 milligrams for adult women.

 

The regimen is based on experimental treatments administered to people with the coronavirus in Shanghai, China, Weber said.

 

 

"The patients who received vitamin C did significantly better than those who did not get vitamin C," he said.

 

"It helps a tremendous amount, but it is not highlighted because it's not a sexy drug."

 

A spokesman for Northwell - which operates 23 hospitals, including Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side - said vitamin C was being "widely used" as a coronavirus treatment throughout the system but noted that medication protocols varied from patient to patient. "As the clinician decides," spokesman Jason Molinet said.

 

About 700 patients are being treated for coronavirus across the hospital network, Molinet said, but it's unclear how many are getting the vitamin C treatment.

 

The vitamin C is administered in addition to such medicines as the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, the antibiotic azithromycin, various biologics and blood thinners, Weber said.

 

As of Tuesday, March 24th, New York hospitals have federal permission to give a cocktail of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to desperately ill patients on a "compassionate care" basis.

 

Weber, 34, said vitamin C levels in coronavirus patients drop dramatically when they suffer sepsis, an inflammatory response that occurs when their bodies overreact to the infection.

 

"It makes all the sense in the world to try and maintain this level of vitamin C," he said.

Francis Lee, Limoneira's Asia Pacific Regional Manager in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam has been providing Limoneira Oranges to Big C stores throughout Vietnam. According to the International Monetary Fund, extensive market-oriented and outward-looking economic policies have helped Vietnam achieve sustained and inclusive economic growth.  

 

The Vietnamese food processing industry has experienced rapid growth over the past decade.  

Speaking in Ho Chi Minh city, Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said that the country's industrial production index rose by some 6.8% across the 2013 to 2017 period for the processed food industry, and 9.7% for the drinks industry.

 

Food processing is also one of the major areas of focus for Vietnam in its development strategy approaching 2025, which will be incorporated into its Vietnam 2035 - Toward Prosperity, Creativity, Equity, and Democracy vision.

 

The study, published in the Journal of Lipid Research, found the beneficial compound also reduced the amount of plaque in arteries. "We went on to show that we can also intervene with nobiletin," said senior author Professor Murray Huff.

 

"We've shown that in mice that already have all the negative symptoms of obesity, we can use nobelitin to reverse those symptoms, and even start to regress plaque build-up in the arteries, known as atherosclerosis," Huff said the team had not yet been able to pinpoint exactly how nobiletin works.

 

One hypothesis is that the molecule acts on the pathway that regulates how fat is handled in the body. Called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), this regulator turns on the mechanism in the body that burns fats to create energy, as well as blocking the manufacture of fats.

 

However, when the researchers looked at nobiletin's effects on mice that had been genetically modified to remove AMPK, the effects were the same. "This result told us that nobiletin is not acting on AMPK, and is bypassing this major regulator of how fat is used in the body. What it still leaves us with is the question - how is nobiletin doing this?" Huff said.

 

The next step is to move these studies into humans to determine if nobiletin has the same positive metabolic effects in human trials.
