How Lemons Support Immune Health - New Video
Now more than ever it is a time to stay home, stay safe and support immune health. Citrus fruits are a great way to strengthen the immune system. Megan Roosevelt, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, founder of Healthy Grocery Girl and spokesperson for Limoneira's Take A Healthy Stand Campaign
says Citrus fruits contain the antioxidant vitamin C, which plays a crucial role in helping support the immune system.
Vitamin C deficiency can increase the susceptibility to infections. In fact, adding vitamin C to the diet both protects and helps the body heal and repair. Vitamin C support also supports collagen production, and proper collagen production is important for gut health. This is important because seventy percent of the immune system resides in the gut. Additionally, vitamin C helps iron absorption. About 70 percent of your body's iron is found in the red blood cells called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin plays an important role in transferring oxygen in your blood from the lungs to the tissues.

Limoneira Annual Shareholder Video

Limoneira Annual Video - 2020 |
As the year unfolds, we continue to watch and react to many different cultural cross-currents that impact our world. The pace of change continues to increase. Things that seemed important even just a few years ago, didn't gain momentum, while things that started small have accelerated.
Limoneira sells its citrus to global retailers and foodservice operators and these sectors continue to evolve. Today's most successful produce departments do much more than sell citrus. They're selling a highly desirable lifestyle that celebrates health, flavor and freshness.
According to the latest Information Resources data, growth in the fresh perimeter is slowing in the US domestic market but with $60 billion in sales, produce still represents the lion's share in fresh.
While the US domestic perimeter may be slowing, significant growth will continue to exist internationally for some important reasons.
Per capita consumption of lemons has been growing in the U.S over the past several years and is at 4.5 lbs. per year.
At the same time, the per capita consumption of lemons in many parts of the world is twice this amount.
Health trends show no sign of abating and the Mediterranean diet with its emphasis on fresh produce, olive oil and citrus along with the functional food movement should lend momentum to increased per capita lemon consumption in the U.S.

Donating Lemons to Hospitals and Those Most in Need
Limoneira is donating lemons for Doctors and Nurses in 5 NYC area hospitals fighting the COVID-19 virus. One of their Doctors, Dr. Andrew Weber is using large doses of Vitamin C to treat the virus.
As you've heard and read, hospital staffs are dealing with this virus without adequate protection, and they are working exhausting schedules. Providing them with lemons will provide a little Vitamin C help, and the NY Drs. are grateful.
Limoneira is also donating lemons to The Ventura County Medical Center, Community Memorial, Food Share, SPIRIT, and Ventura's Area Agency on Aging (VCAAA). VCAAA is currently hosting a food pantry for people 60 and older and individuals with disabilities. We have also donated Tyvek white disposable coveralls used by our field workers to Community Memorial Hospital Drs. and Nurses.
Dr. Andrew G. Weber, a pulmonologist and critical-care specialist affiliated with two Northwell Health facilities on Long Island, said his intensive-care patients with the coronavirus immediately receive 1,500 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C.
Identical amounts of the powerful antioxidant are then readministered three or four times a day, he said. Each dose is more than 16 times the National Institutes of Health's daily recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C, which is just 90 milligrams for adult men and 75 milligrams for adult women.
The regimen is based on experimental treatments administered to people with the coronavirus in Shanghai, China, Weber said.
"The patients who received vitamin C did significantly better than those who did not get vitamin C," he said.
"It helps a tremendous amount, but it is not highlighted because it's not a sexy drug."
A spokesman for Northwell - which operates 23 hospitals, including Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side - said vitamin C was being "widely used" as a coronavirus treatment throughout the system but noted that medication protocols varied from patient to patient. "As the clinician decides," spokesman Jason Molinet said.
About 700 patients are being treated for coronavirus across the hospital network, Molinet said, but it's unclear how many are getting the vitamin C treatment.
The vitamin C is administered in addition to such medicines as the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, the antibiotic azithromycin, various biologics and blood thinners, Weber said.
As of Tuesday, March 24th, New York hospitals have federal permission to give a cocktail of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to desperately ill patients on a "compassionate care" basis.
Weber, 34, said vitamin C levels in coronavirus patients drop dramatically when they suffer sepsis, an inflammatory response that occurs when their bodies overreact to the infection.
"It makes all the sense in the world to try and maintain this level of vitamin C," he said.

Sustainability - Earth Day
It may be hard to imagine that before 1970, a factory could spew black clouds of toxic smoke into the air or dump tons of toxic waste into a nearby stream, and that was perfectly legal. They could not be taken to court to stop it. How was that possible? Because there was no EPA, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act. There were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment.
In spring 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. Twenty million Americans demonstrated in different U.S. cities, and it worked. In December 1970, Congress authorized the creation of a new federal agency to tackle environmental issues, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Earth Day now includes events in more than 193 countries, which are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.
Limoneira's new 40-page Sustainability report, distributed with this year's Annual Shareholder report, comprehensively highlights the number of ways that the Company is addressing this important topic. Water, Energy, Waste, Soil Health, Crop Diversity, Housing, Employee welfare, and strengthening our communities are some of the topics covered.
Last autumn's California Central Coast Sustainability Exchange at Limoneira brought together domestic and international industry professionals to learn about the many efforts in this sphere being made by Limoneira and many of our produce partners.
Limoneira's Board and management are committed to this important topic and will continue to make additional positive sustainability impacts.

Limoneira Celebrates Earth Day with Green Living Tips from Spokesperson Megan Roosevelt
Spring has sprung, and in honor of Earth Day, Limoneira's Spokesperson Megan Roosevelt outlines five easy tips to make your life "greener", more sustainable and healthier.
"Sustainability matters because we have one planet that we share and it's important that we take care of it for our lifetime as well as future generations.
Many modern conveniences have shown to have a negative effect on our environment and now is a good time to make little changes that can contribute to a more sustainable world."
For a visual reminder, Megan demonstrates the tips below on the Limoneira YouTube channel. Don't forget to subscribe - videos with more wonderful recipes, tips and tricks not detailed in this release will be added to the channel each Friday every month.
Take a look at some of this month's five easy to sustainable tips below.
Tip 1: Shorter Showers. Just a five-minute shower results in the use of 10 - 25 gallons of water. Taking shorter showers can save gallons of water and save money too.
Tip 2: Paper or Plastic? Neither! Bring your own reusable bags to the grocery store -
Tip 3: Eat What's in Season! Eating seasonally fresh produce can be more affordable and has been shown to be more nutrient-dense. Citrus, including lemons, is incredibly versatile and thanks to Limoneira's One World of Citrus campaign, are available all year round. To be super sustainable, use the whole citrus - either the juice or the entire flesh of the fruit as well as the peel, which is packed with nutrients and adds a wonderful flavor boost. And don't forget to compost your citrus and all your produce as it is great for the environment.
Tip 4: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. If you find yourself with lots of containers and glass jars, use them for food storage or take them to the grocery store to fill up with bulk items.
Tip 5: Reusable Straws. Use a glass, metal or reusable straw. In the United States, it is estimated that every day we use more than 500 million plastic straws. Plastic is contributing to landfills, polluting our oceans and hurting marine life, so use a reusable straw to take better care of our planet.
Beyond producing nutrient-rich, immunity-boosting citrus, Limoneira is doing its part and contributing to sustainability in many other ways, such as:
* Limoneira has 7 solar installations across the company
* These projects produce a total 7M KW annually and will reduce 86,830 tons of CO2 over 25 years
* Limoneira is generating clean energy and capturing savings too. As energy costs continue to rise, we have locked in our electrical rates. The projects reduce our electrical costs from Southern California Edison by approximately 70%
* Our solar projects enable us to be 50% off the grid
* In tandem with solar energy, Limoneira is using a combination of other 21st century technologies such as drones, and GPS-moisture monitoring to produce delicious crops as sustainably as possible.
* We have a LEED Certified Observation Tower over converter on Main Ranch
* Santa Clara Valley Native Vegetation on Green Roof
* Agricultural Tours for 3rd and 4th graders that meet California Science and Math Curriculum
* Tesla's 400kWh scalable energy storage system reduces energy costs and improves reliability for demand charges and shifts energy use from peak to off-peak times
* Power demand can be inconsistent, producing "peaks" throughout the day. Tesla's storage system anticipates peaks and autonomously begins to supply power to "shave" the peaks
* This system reduces site load and minimizes demand charges
It also provides us with the ability to reduce our energy costs by charging the battery during off-peak hours and dispatching the battery during peak hours
* The system measures energy pricing arbitrage value using utility tariff data and autonomously controls the battery to maximize value
- Limoneira has a 12- acre facility that diverts green waste from landfills. The resulting mulch is used in the orchards to reduce water, herbicide and fertilizer use. It also strengthens tree roots and gets more nutrients to trees.
- Limoneira uses patented technology to treat 30 million gallons of greywater from our farmworker housing units and processing facilities bringing it up to CA title 22 drinking standards.
- The Company is a leader in providing Farm Worker Housing and uses drought-friendly landscaping at these homes.
- Limoneira has built a live-walk-work community named Harvest at Limoneira, with homes, a school, parks and an athletic center, along with infrastructure and commercial space to support new jobs and investment opportunities for Santa Paula.
Last but not least, Limoneira is utilizing social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube to bring easy, nutritious recipes and natural, DIY cleaning solutions and health boosters onto the screens and into the homes of every subscriber and follower in the Limoneira family. It's never been easier for everyone to do their part to give back to the earth.
You can learn more about Limoneira's mission for sustainability here on the Limoneira YouTube channel. New videos featuring Megan providing delicious recipes, and sustainable tips will be added to the channel throughout the month. Limoneira's Oranges in Vietnam
Francis Lee, Limoneira's Asia Pacific Regional Manager in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam has been providing Limoneira Oranges to Big C stores throughout Vietnam. Big C is a grocery and general merchandising retailer headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand and is Thailand's second-largest hypermarket operator.
"Limoneira has been exporting to the Asia Pacific region for more than 60 years," said Alex Teague, Chief Operating Officer at Limoneira. "The growth of both established markets and emerging markets is a key component of our One World of Citrus™ model.
According to the International Monetary Fund, extensive market-oriented and outward-looking economic policies have helped Vietnam achieve sustained and inclusive economic growth.
The Vietnamese food processing industry has experienced rapid growth over the past decade.
Speaking in Ho Chi Minh city, Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said that the country's industrial production index rose by some 6.8% across the 2013 to 2017 period for the processed food industry, and 9.7% for the drinks industry.
Food processing is also one of the major areas of focus for Vietnam in its development strategy approaching 2025, which will be incorporated into its Vietnam 2035 - Toward Prosperity, Creativity, Equity, and Democracy vision.

Citrus Flavonoid Could Cut Obesity
Fruit Net, a leading Industry Trade Publication has shared that researchers at the Western University of Ontario say mice fed a high-fat and high-cholesterol diet that were given nobiletin, a flavonoid found in oranges and mandarins, were noticeably thinner and had reduced levels of insulin resistance and blood fats.
The study, published in the Journal of Lipid Research, found the beneficial compound also reduced the amount of plaque in arteries. "We went on to show that we can also intervene with nobiletin," said senior author Professor Murray Huff.
"We've shown that in mice that already have all the negative symptoms of obesity, we can use nobelitin to reverse those symptoms, and even start to regress plaque build-up in the arteries, known as atherosclerosis," Huff said the team had not yet been able to pinpoint exactly how nobiletin works.
One hypothesis is that the molecule acts on the pathway that regulates how fat is handled in the body. Called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), this regulator turns on the mechanism in the body that burns fats to create energy, as well as blocking the manufacture of fats.
However, when the researchers looked at nobiletin's effects on mice that had been genetically modified to remove AMPK, the effects were the same. "This result told us that nobiletin is not acting on AMPK, and is bypassing this major regulator of how fat is used in the body. What it still leaves us with is the question - how is nobiletin doing this?" Huff said.
The next step is to move these studies into humans to determine if nobiletin has the same positive metabolic effects in human trials.
