pmaPMA Foodservice Monterey

Once again, on July 26 and 27th, Monterey will be a hub of activity as Chefs, the produce industry and the media converge to discuss emerging trends within the Food Service space at the Produce Marketing Associations Food Service Show. This is the only event dedicated to fresh produce in foodservice.

Limoneira Management will be on hand to meet new customers, welcome existing partners and showcase new ideas specifically for this important business segment. Limoneira Pink Lemons, Seedless Lemons, and Meyers will get the spotlight. These varieties shine brightly in restaurants globally!

Many foodservice operators have Re gistered Dieticians on staff to help ensure great taste is balanced with health (even McDonalds has gotten on board!). McDonald's is dedicated to providing its customers with more delicious menu options, starting with the ingredients they use to make them.

Limoneira's own Megan Roosevelt helps demonstrate to this important audience, the many delicious ways that Limoneira citrus can be incorporated into menu planning as part of Limoneira's Take A Healthy Stand™ campaign. She and food service and grocery retail Registered Dieticians and Nutritionists are dedicated to getting people healthy.

foodserviceWhat's New on the Restaurant/Away From the Home Dining Scene

A very large percentage of Limoneira's business is through global food service. The PMA Foodservice Show in Monterey gives us an opportunity to let our customers and prospects know how we address emerging foodservice trends.

According to Food Service Equipment and Supplies Magazine, a leader in this space, around 37% of total sales in 2018 were from off-site purchases. With the growth of ghost restaurants, delivery apps, and takeout services, this percentage is expected to grow even more.

We can integrate Limoneira citrus into any food service delivery option and offer 52 week supply with our One World of Citrus® model.

Also, rather than the food being the main focus, customers are instead looking for an experience. Some customers are looking for a social experience where there is the option to meet other diners, while others are searching for unique menu items that create an immersive experience. Limoneira can play a role here too. Each of our lemon varieties has a unique flavor profile and, like wines, pair perfectly with certain menu offerings. We have in-unit merchandising that helps explain the differences and also showcases the unique 126-year history of Limoneira.

Climate change and environmental issues are also becoming a major selling point for customers. Restaurants typically produce a lot of trash and recycling. Some establishments are choosing to create a zero-waste kitchen by dropping disposables and coming up with innovative ways to use all parts of their food.

Limoneira is playing a role here too as part of our Take A Healthy Stand™ campaign-We are encouraging chefs and consumers to use the entire lemon. The peel and pith also have great health benefits.

Fast-casual restaurants have been popular for years for offering quick and easy sit-down meals. Fine casual dining establishments offer the same casual atmosphere and quick service, but with higher-quality ingredients and more unique menus.

Limoneira works with chefs from around the world that offer unique recipes and ingredients that combine deliciously with our citrus and we love sharing them.

Edgar Guiterrez, Vice President of Farming Operations has been working together with the Ventura County Resource Conservation District on a project to study the impact that compost and mulch have on soil health metrics, water use, tree health, GHG emissions and resilience to pest pressures in citrus production.

Lemons are cultivated on approximately 17,000 acres in Ventura County and came in as the County's second most valuable crop for 2017's agricultural production. The proposed project provides a platform for California Central Coast citrus growers to learn about and adopt soil health practices that build economic and ecological resiliency within citrus operations. Though the citrus industry has developed a strong presence throughout California, pervasive climate-related issues threaten the industry, including ongoing drought conditions and invasive disease-spreading pests. Limoneira is heavily invested in improving soil health and increasing the capacity of their trees to withstand drought conditions and fight off invasive pests and diseases such as the Asian Citrus Psyllid.

Limoneira owns a 45-acre block that is the site of the project and plans to establish a perennial citrus orchard that integrates soil conservation practices that will rebuild soil health, reduce reliance on chemical inputs and lay the groundwork for long-term sustainability. We have informally experimented with compost and mulch on other parcels, and the proposed project will provide the resources to study, quantify and demonstrate the benefits.

jimrogersLimoneira Opinion Leader Boston - Jim Rogers Chef and Owner Andiamo Restaurants and Bar

Award-winning chef Jim Rogers is the owner of Andiamo Restaurant + Bar in Boston area (he and his wife own two locations-Chelmsford and Newburyport).

His vision is to create a neighborhood restaurant serving exquisitely prepared, fresh, Italian food based on traditional recipes. CHELMSFORD (CBS) - When you walk into Andiamo, you will see that the pasta is being made fresh, the dough is being hand-stretched, the sauce is simmering, and the fire is blazing. You will also see there's a good chance you're in for a great meal.

The original location in Newburyport is inside a cozy, rustic building that dates back to the 1700s. In Chelmsford, Rogers has created a sleek and sophisticated atmosphere. The restaurant has a large open fireplace in the middle with great wine cabinets. A very large bar on one side, on the other side, a big open kitchen where guests can see pasta being made and bread baking.  Artisanal and local ingredients, including double zero flour- the finest milled flour available are the foundation for his menus including house made ravioli. House-made fresh mozzarella, burrata, ravioli, sausage, and focaccia are also a staple.

Andiamo features traditional Italian dishes with the Chef's personal touch. The Bolognese has a scoop of house-made burrata on top, and the Short Rib "Two Way" - a seasonal special - is served with hand-rolled pasta filled with braised short rib, Cipollini onion, and caramelized carrots. The Chef also loves fresh lemons.  His Lemon Basil Butter is the perfect complement to his Grilled Swordfish with Pan Roasted Vegetable Parmigiano Risotto and Crispy Artichokes and his Jumbo Shrimp with Garlic and white wine and lemon over Linguine is a restaurant favorite.

If you're lucky enough to live in Boston or are traveling there and you're looking for a little love and pampering, we highly recommend Andiamo's restaurant and bar.

carstarterHow many Lemons Does it Take to Start a Car?

Our friends at Fresh Plaza shared a very cool video with us. We have known for a number of years that the acid found in lemons can be used to generate electricity.

In the video below Russian mechanics try to find out how many lemons it takes to start a car.

Can a battery made from 1000 lemons start a car?
Can a battery made from 1000 lemons start a car?

The lemon battery is only 1.5 milliampere. To start a car you need around 100 amperes. Around 66 million lemons are needed to be able to start a car. No more AAA.
