Limoneira Releases New Sustainability Report

Corporate Responsibility is an important priority for Limoneira's Board and the Company. We have a long history of a strong commitment to being an ethical and responsible company acting with integrity and respect for each other, our communities and the environment. Limoneira's board of Directors considered this commitment when it approved the charter for the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee on January 28, 2020. In the charter, the Board of Directors tasked this committee with the responsibility for overseeing our environmental and social responsibility and sustainability practices, including considering potential long and short term trends and impacts that environmental and social responsibility and sustainability issues may have related to our business. Limoneira CEO, Harold Edwards stated, "The Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee is also responsible for overseeing the Company's public reporting on environmental and social responsibility programs and practices which are comprehensively compiled in Limoneira's publicly released Sustainability Highlights report which is available on our website."
App
Nature's Pharmacy App

Many consumers are quick to turn to the pharmacy or supplement aisle to aide or prevent common ailments, but Nature's Pharmacy shows consumers that much of what they need can easily, and inexpensively, be found in the produce aisle. The app helps consumers easily identify fruits and vegetables in grocery stores that can help solve healthcare issues they may be wrestling with.

Limoneira cross-tabulated 57 health concerns including the need to increase good cholesterol, prevent cardiovascular disease or ease insomnia, as well as desired outcomes, including improving energy levels or reducing wrinkles, with 74 fruits and vegetables. All of these foods, which can be found in the produce section of most grocery stores, contain 12 essential vitamins and 11 essential minerals that address these concerns or help with desired outcomes. By selecting a concern or outcome, the app then generates foods in the produce aisle that can help consumers achieve their health goals.

The app is just one of several educational platforms to be launched as part of Limoneira's new Take a Healthy Stand™ platform, which showcases the many ways that citrus and produce can play a role in helping to alleviate serious health issues as well as enhancing personal appearance and wellbeing. The foundation underpinning Limoneira's Take A Healthy Stand™ educational campaign is consumer-friendly messaging supported by research by the Institute of National Health and other objective organizations.

"Nature's Pharmacy and Take a Healthy Stand are important components of the Food as Medicine movement taking hold nationwide," said Megan Roosevelt, a Limoneira nutritionist and founder of Healthy Grocery Girl®. "Food as Medicine maintains that fresh, healthy produce such as lemons can help avoid an expensive and perhaps less effective trip to the grocery department's supplement aisle."

The Nature's Pharmacy app can be found on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
THSCardioTake A Healthy Stand - How Lemons Can Help With Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. In fact, according to a 2019 report from the American College of Cardiology, every 40 seconds someone will have a stroke. Diet and lifestyle both play a huge role in heart disease prevention. Studies published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism have shown that plant compounds in lemons known as hesperidin and diosmin have been found to help lower cholesterol. It has also been demonstrated that walking and eating lemons every day is associated with a decrease in blood pressure.

ThinkP
Think Pink This Spring

Of the several varieties, pink lemons are among the most unusual. They were discovered in the 1930s as a Eureka lemon hybrid and are still quite rare. They are sustainably grown using solar energy and patented water processing technology from our farmworker housing units on Limoneira Ranch (and our English Miniature Sheep graze among the solar orchards and help with weed abatement).

The exteriors of our pink lemons are variegated (striped) which fade as they mature, and their fleshy interiors become more vibrantly pink with age. Pink lemons are slightly sweeter than our classic lemons. Celebrated chefs and mixologists around the world love them because they add artistic flair to their creations.

Each of our lemon varieties has slightly different flavor profiles that pair perfectly with recipes. Pinks are wonderful with fish, poultry, vegetables, and salads.

Sweetened with sugar or agave the juice of Pink lemons also makes a delicious lemonade. For a sweet twist on the classics try using the juice of Pink lemons in your favorite lemon cake, lemon bars, or lemon pie recipe. Their vibrant exterior also makes them a perfect garnish for cocktails.

Look for Limoneira Pink lemons at Trader Joes, Meijers and Hello Fresh or your favorite grocers.

10 Easy Tricks To Green-ify Your Life With Lemons

It's no secret that lemons are a boon to any kitchen or DIY beauty routine - but did you know they're a handy sustainability tool as well? With Earth Day around the corner, our Springtime focus is all about making life simpler without investing in potentially toxic chemicals or overpriced tools. We've conferred with our stellar team of opinion leaders to bring you ten great ways you can make your home life a bit more sustainable - with lemons!
  1. No Pesticides: Keep ants out of your kitchen without putting harmful pesticides or chemicals near your food and appliances! Apply lemon juice to thresholds, windowsills, and any cracks where ants might get in - and then follow up with small bits of lemon peels scattered outside any outdoor entrances. Got roaches? Wash your floors with lemon water and watch them run in disgust.
  2. Cleaner Produce: You can use your lemons, which are a natural disinfectant, to clean any lurking pesticides from the skins of your other fruits and veggies. Plus, your produce will smell lovely.
  3. Garbage Freshener: If your garbage can is getting too rank before it's full enough to justify changing the bag, there's a way to fight back! Save leftover lemon peels and toss them in the base of every fresh bag. Repeat every couple of weeks for best results.
  4. DIY Humidifier Cleaner: You can easily clean your home humidifier! Simply pour 3 to 4 capfuls of fresh lemon juice in the water in your humidifier - plus, the air will smell like lemons!
  5. No More Dry Cleaning: Leave your pricy dry-cleaners and harsh chemicals in the past! Scrub the stained areas on your shirts with equal parts lemon juice and water for a fresh and easy fix. (Hint: You can also soak your delicates in lemon juice & baking soda for 30 minutes before washing as a natural alternative to chlorine bleach.)
  6. Revitalize Wilting Produce: Don't toss that soggy lettuce! Add lemon juice to a bowl of cold water. Add the soggy lettuce and refrigerate for one hour. Dry the leaves completely and use as desired! Lemon juice can also be used to keep cauliflower white during cooking, and to keep guacamole from going brown.
  7. Fresher Fridge-Air: If your fridge is retaining too many smells, lemons can help. Simply dab lemon juice on a re-usable sponge and leave it in the fridge overnight. (Note: You may also want to ditch the food that's causing the unpleasant odors to maximize effectiveness.)
  8. Weeds Be Gone: Banish weeds from your garden (sans pesticides) with simple lemon juice. Fill a spray bottle with 5 parts lemon, 2 parts water and douse the offending plants until they're well-coated. The weeds should shrivel within days.
  9. Litter Box Woes: Don't invest in pricey deodorizers for your cat's litter box. Just put lemon halves in a bowl (flesh side up) and leave the bowl in the same box as your litter room (or bathroom)! Your guests will thank you and you'll save a bundle on store-bought air fresheners.
  10. Household Cleaner: Don't use harmful chemicals to clean your home. Create a useful all-purpose cleaner for your kitchen and bathroom by combining equal parts lemon juice and water in a spray bottle. Lemons are a natural disinfectant and your house will smell fresh for spring! (Note: do not use on wood. For wood polish, mix 1 cup olive oil and ½ a cup of lemon juice. Test spot first.)
These are just a handful of the wonderful ways you can make your life greener with just a few lemons. For more tips, tricks, recipes and other ways to incorporate citrus into your everyday life, visit Limoneira.com

Limoneira's Take A Healthy Stand And Nature's Pharmacy Reaches 102 Million Homes In The U.S

This spring, Limoneira's Take A Healthy Stand™ (THS) educational campaign and Nature's Pharmacy™ app (NP) will appear on nationally syndicated TV lifestyle show Savvy Living.

The foundation underpinning Limoneira's Take A Healthy Stand™ educational campaign is simple messaging supported by research by the Institute of National Health and other responsible, objective organizations.

Driven in part by emerging food fortification technologies and discoveries of nutrient benefits, consumers are choosing to make the most of their caloric intake. Hence, the growth of functional foods is set to outpace the growth of conventional foods around the world, across both developed and emerging markets globally.

Three-fourths of U.S. consumers believe healthy foods and beverages can be used to increase the quality of their lives. In addition, more than a quarter of Americans believe functional foods and beverages can be used in place of some medicines.

It may not be surprising, then, that a majority of consumers would use foods and beverages to prevent and treat many health conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, lack of energy, intestinal irregularity and even cancer.

THS and NP messaging will appear on Savvy Living this spring. This nationally-syndicated show reaches nearly 102 million homes reaching nearly 90% of U.S. markets.

In addition, the show airs on select weekends on major network TV (CBS/FOX/ABC/CW) in key U.S. markets: on the top-rated CBS ono WLNY New York; CBS on KCAL9 Los Angeles; CBS, KTVU Plus and The CW in San Francisco; CBS ono WBFS33 Miami/Ft. Lauderdale; and CBS and FOX in San Diego - the #1, #2, #6, #16 and #29 U.S. markets with upwards of 17.4 million collective TV households (+ 102 million on the national front). Savvy Living is viewable on all of the top networks around the world including ROKU TVs streaming platform with 32.3 million active accounts globally, Amazon Fire available to 30 million+, Apple TV, Android TV, and over 100 other Smart TV and OTT platforms.
CleanTrends
2020 Cleaning And Household Care Trends

According to Nielson, eco-friendly products are highly valued in today's world. Concern for the environment influenced product purchases for 45% of consumers over the last year, and brands are being challenged to look for more ethical and responsible sourcing of ingredients as well as thinking about packaging, waste and harmful by-products.

Formulation Transparency Clarity from brands around ingredients is being increasingly demanded across all industries. Consumers have moved beyond no phosphates claims, and now the emphasis is on what goes into products rather than what has been removed or left out. Shoppers are becoming more knowledgeable about ingredients as information and guidance is readily available online and the movement for sustainable living grows, particularly among younger consumers. Product transparency is the new normal.

As far back as 2016, over a quarter of consumers thought that all-natural ingredients were "very  important" when surveyed by Nielsen. Now, those who are more price and eco-conscious are  looking for natural cleaning recipes. Retail products that can boast natural  ingredients, as well as effective cleaning properties, are expected to continue gaining traction, as are  natural fragrances.

For many consumers, a back-to-basics philosophy is contributing to behavior  but financial considerations are also factors - especially when consumers are looking to  stretch their budgets. Using natural-based, everyday household ingredients has the dual  benefit of saving the environment and money. According to Nielsen, manufacturers looking to tap into a  more holistic, home-grown remedy trend may want to consider harnessing the power of  basic ingredients in their products.

Demand for recycled and recyclable packaging has never been higher, with the surge in awareness  of plastic pollution and its impact on the planet and it is anticipated that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050 if action isn't taken. Steps household brands are taking to address this move away from plastic are:
  • Water-soluble packaging
  • Plastic-free packaging where possible
  • Concentrated products that can be diluted by the consumer
  • Concentrated doses in laundry and dishwashing that minimize packaging
  • Refill pouches that contain less plastic
  • Recycled and recyclable packaging

Saudia Davis - Greenhouse Ecocleaning - New York City, New York

Saudia Davis, the Founder of Greenhouse Eco-Cleaning was working as a movie publicist when my grandmother, a long-time professional cleaner, passed away from cancer. It was a great loss to her family, and one that had a profound impact on her personally, especially after discovering that her cancer was most likely due to her lifelong exposure to toxic cleaning chemicals.

As a result of this experience, She began to question why there weren't healthier cleaning alternatives available, and how she could help by designing a better solution that was just as effective at cleaning. And so her journey of creating Greenhouse began. She loves Limoneira lemons. Not only are they great in recipes, but they also act as effective natural cleaners and she loves the lack of waste.

Greenhouse also has a line of Ecospirit cleaning products, all of which are made from vegetable-based, organic, and 100% biodegradable ingredients. Greenhouse EcoCleaning
